Zero-Mana-Boss 27

Chapter 27 The Silent Elf

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

After briefing the guards who’d rushed into the courtyard and telling them we’d caught five intruders, they got to work on cleanup.

I left the rest to them, teleported away with the unconscious infiltrators.

 Destination: the theater basement.

A cold draft hit my skin.

The theater was built tough — designed as a safe base in emergencies. The basement had thick mana barriers and physical reinforcement, unshakable even in a fight.

Before opening hours, only a few trusted guards were inside. Better for questioning than my own estate.

I woke the apparent leader of the five with a recovery potion, sat her across from me.

The wooden chair creaked in the quiet room.

”Now. Tell me: why break into my home?”

I leaned back, voice calm and gentle.

 Her name was Sylphie.

I’d gotten that while her mind was still fuzzy.

Her green ponytail, bright as spring grass, shimmered in the dim light. Sharp blue eyes locked onto me. She was small, but her body — under the deep-green leather armor — was lean, tight, trained.

 A battle-hardened veteran.

And her ears: longer, slimmer than a human’s, pointed at the tips.

 ——An elf.

A race from the ancient forests, blessed with long lives and huge mana.

These intruders had far too much mana for humans because they were pure-blooded elves.

 She was also strikingly beautiful.

 ”…”

Sylphie stayed silent. Mouth pressed tight, no hint of emotion. She’d grudgingly given her name at first, then shut completely.

On her collarbone: a faint light-purple pattern, like blood under skin. A slave crest.

But I’d erased it with my [Magic Seal] (a spell that cancels magical effects).

Freed her from exhaustion and slavery.

Given how friendly I was being, I couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t talk.

Did she still not trust me?

 I needed to be clearer.

For elves with such mana to become “Magic Slaves,” their captors must have used an ‘Ancient Slave contract’. Nothing else could bind a warrior like her.

”I won’t punish or hurt you. If you cooperate, I’ll personally treat your comrades resting in another room.”

Sylphie’s chin pulled back, but her gaze didn’t waver. That sharp light still in her eyes. My words seemed to bounce off an iron wall.

”You were forced into this. I dissolved that slave contract. I can nullify any slave contract — free all your companions too.”

 Silence hung heavy.

Still not working? Her face was like carved stone.

”I get why you don’t trust humans. Your people have been at war with us for ages. But I want to end that war. Build a world where humans and elves respect each other as equals. If you can, lend me your strength.”

I poured passion into every word.

 Sylphie didn’t budge.

(How strange. In the game, this speech maxed out relationship with elves…?)

Prince Liam, the game’s hero — ‘War Chronicles of Light and Darkness ~Prince Liam’s Grand Adventure~’. Blessed by the Goddess of Light as a child, he championed ending war and uniting races.

Slavery was normal here. Few called it evil.

But the Asgard Royal Family, followers of the Goddess of Light, had generations who hated the slave trade. During a ceasefire talk with elves, Prince Liam spoke his ideals and won over Princess Lyphia Elfheim.

On this occasion, I had tailored my speech entirely around that scenario as a point of reference, yet I wasn’t getting any reaction whatsoever.

I needed the elves on my side.

My goal wasn’t “preserving a discriminatory world” but “total victory in the coming world war.” Throwing away anti-elf discrimination was cheap.

I wanted an alliance with their mana. My father, stuck in old ways, would never think of this.

A direct link to the elves would be a huge advantage against him — he always looked for excuses to kill me. More trump cards for a worst-case scenario.

 …But her response was terrible.

 Dammit.

(Did I mess up the approach? I only freed her, kept her companions separate. Looks like I’m negotiating with hostages, got her on guard? But they just raided my estate. No way I could question a prisoner without precautions.)

 This was bad.

I was completely running out of things to say.

How do you turn an elf into an ally? Was spouting ideals not enough? Did I lack the prince’s natural charisma?

I forced my panic down, kept a calm, confident smile, looked gently at Sylphie.

What do I do? Say something. Anything…

 Then—

 ”U-Um…”

Sylphie finally spoke, voice tiny. Words trembled in the tense room.

 ”I-I… well, talking… isn’t… r-really… something I am… v-very good at… …Thank you, for… s-saving us. I am… grateful.”

Her voice was frail, coming out in halting, disconnected fragments.

Despite her fierce glare, her face was deep red. The blush reached the tips of her pointed ears.

…She was a veteran warrior, but also painfully shy and awkward socially.1 My dramatic words had overwhelmed her, leaving her frozen.

I swallowed a sigh of relief, offered a warm smile.

”Is that so? Sorry, I went on too long. No rush. Take your time, tell me about yourself when you’re ready.”

Some tension left Sylphie’s face. Her shoulders eased a fraction.

Her first request: treat her companions. Then free everyone from their slave contracts.

 I agreed with enthusiasm.

After a hesitant pause, she made a bigger request. Settling her resolve, she met my eyes. Now a clear light of conviction burned in her pupils.

”In that case… I have one more… request. Our elven princess, Lyphia Elfheim-sama… please, could you… help us rescue her?”

 ——The elven princess.

The corners of my mouth twitched into a smile.

 A request I hadn’t dared hope for.

Things couldn’t have turned out more magnificently.

 Summary:

Moving his interrogation to a secure theater basement protected by thick mana barriers, the protagonist awakens the elven leader Sylphie after neutralizing her slave crest with his magic seal. He delivers a sweeping, idealistic speech based on his video game knowledge to earn her trust, only to receive a completely frozen reaction that sends him into an internal panic. Tension breaks when the formidable elf stammers out a confession of extreme social anxiety, ultimately turning the interaction around by begging him to rescue the elven princess.

 Trivia:

 - The theater basement functions as a fully reinforced emergency base protected by multiple layers of mana barriers and physical defenses.

 - The protagonist possesses a unique skill called [Magic Seal] that allows him to dismantle any grade of slave contract, which he uses to free Sylphie.

 - Elves are historically locked in an active state of war with humanity in this world, making standard diplomatic relations incredibly rare.

 - The game knowledge the protagonist utilizes comes directly from a narrative titled ‘War Chronicles of Light and Darkness ~Prince Liam’s Grand Adventure~’.

 - The underlying purpose of securing an alliance with the elves is to establish leverage against the protagonist’s own treacherous father.
