Volume 5 Chapter 16 Day Three: Company Exploration

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Risa and the others continued their discussion. Mother, her expression serious, issued instructions to Anri-san.

”You must head to the shrine immediately and stop that man,” Mother said.

”Understood,” Anri-san replied. “But Mother, where exactly is this shrine?”

”…I do not know,” Mother admitted.

”Huh, you can’t be serious!” Risa burst out.

It was Risa, not Anri-san, who raised her voice at such an absurd answer. Her tone was overflowing with nothing but utter disbelief.

”You were the manager, right?” Risa demanded. “So how can you not know?”

”When I took over as manager, the location of the shrine had already become unknown,” Mother said sharply. “Do not jump to conclusions.”

”You don’t know the location at all?” Risa pressed. “Are there any hints? Anything at all?”

”I was told it is somewhere in this mountain range,” Mother said.

”That’s the same as knowing nothing,” Risa muttered.

While Risa remained in a mood of resignation, Anri-san continued the questioning.

”Is there nothing else you can recall?” Anri-san asked.

”If I knew, I would not have come here,” Mother replied. “I am here to search for any information that man might have left behind. Anri, do you have any leads?”

”That is…” Anri-san hesitated. “I understand. I shall check Ogura-san’s schedule and the workroom for today.”

The three of them began to move.

Anri-san and Mother, who had finished her treatment, headed toward the office area, while Risa alone walked back toward us.

”We’ve gotten ourselves into a troublesome situation,” Risa said.

I placed a finger to her lips to stop her as she started to explain.

”I heard the conversation,” I said. “It’s alright.”

”Oh, is that so?” Risa asked.

”Everyone heard it, too, right?” I said, checking with the group behind me.

 Everyone nodded.

”I see, so you were listening,” Risa said. “Was I being too loud… well, that saves me the trouble of explaining, so that helps.”

”What do you intend to do?” I asked.

”Who knows?” Risa shrugged. “Either we hurry and find the shrine, or we go find the old man, right? Hopefully, we can figure out the location…”

”Based on what was said earlier,” I said, thinking out loud, “the current manager was chosen because they can perform the ritual at the shrine, right? Doesn’t that mean there’s a possibility the family knows the location? Given the name, it’s Shoji-kun’s family home, isn’t it?”

”Ah, that’s right,” Risa said. “I should try asking them.”

”First, we wait for Anri-san to return,” I suggested.

After a short wait, the two appeared in the lobby.

Risa was called over, spoke to them briefly, and then returned with Anri-san.

”They want us to help with the search,” Risa said.

”I am very sorry to ask,” Anri-san added, “but could you please lend us your cooperation?”

 This is becoming a hassle.

Wait, can’t Hinoki sense the location of that shrine?

’Sorry, Bro. I’ve been trying to track it, but I can’t find the location at all. I think there’s some kind of mechanism at work that prevents my detection.’1

Even our few clues were useless this time. I gently declined Anri-san’s request.

”We would love to help,” I said carefully, “but we are amateurs when it comes to the snowy mountains. I believe what we can do is limited.”

”I suppose so…” Anri-san said. “There is a place I want to go, and I would like you to accompany me there, if you would. I apologize for the trouble, but I ask for your help just for the morning.”

”Since this has to do with Risa, my group will help,” I said. “That’s fine, right, Chifumi?”

 ”Sure thing~” Chifumi agreed.

No members raised any objections to my decision.

”What about Manaka and the others?” I asked. “You don’t have to come along, you know?”

”We have already heard the story,” Manaka replied. “We aren’t heartless enough to refuse. That said, what we can do is also limited. Waiting on standby, acting as a liaison, that sort of thing.”

 ”I appreciate it,” I said.

It was decided that everyone would cooperate in some way.

”By the way,” I said, “what about the other members of that Dungeon Manager’s group? If it’s a Majin, surely there are subordinates like Majo or Strong-Females (Shoji’s group members), right? Have those people also disappeared?”

”We are unable to reach any of them,” Anri-san said.

”So, they are acting as a group unit,” I mused. “This sounds like it’s going to be a big deal…”

Assuming the dissatisfaction and resentment that had been building up for years toward the long-ignored Majin had finally exploded, they must be fully prepared. The things we could do were, at best, limited.

Preventing whatever was about to happen seemed impossible. I could only hope that the current Dungeon Manager wouldn’t go on a “destroy the world” rampage and would be satisfied with just leaving Mother speechless.

”I am heading into the mountains,” Anri-san announced. “In two hours, my group members will arrive here. Until then, I would like you to accompany Tatemiya-san’s group.”

According to Anri-san, the current manager frequently went hiking in the mountains. It was believed he went in to pick wild vegetables, but given the circumstances, Anri-san’s opinion is that he might actually have been looking for the shrine.

If he had been picking wild vegetables for over ten years, his knowledge of this mountain range must be substantial.

The mountain was like a garden to him. And we were going to waltz right in there and try to persuade him? I had no guarantee that we wouldn’t be “disappeared” in the mountains, disguised as a freak accident.

My current inventory of weapons was limited to the small magic pistol that Risa carried. We hadn’t brought Mitsuki’s Hama Kongou or Yurina’s katana on the trip.

We borrowed police batons and staffs for sorcerers so we could at least manage some self-defense. They aren’t much, but they are better than nothing.

Also, I tried to ask Shoji-kun if he knew anything about the shrine’s location, but I didn’t have his contact information.

Since Risa knew the contact info for Inamori-san (a member of Shoji-kun’s group), we managed to get in touch through them. By chance, they were at a nearby hot spring facility. We were able to rendezvous in a little over ten minutes.

I explained the situation to Shoji-kun, who came along with his group, and asked if he knew anything, but he didn’t. He had his family home inquire, and we continued the search for the manager.

At the request of Anri-san and Risa, we asked Mother to wait at the hotel.

By emphasizing that she was already injured, she reluctantly agreed to stay behind. Well, in that state, who knew what would happen if she encountered the Dungeon Manager? I wanted to avoid a situation where a sorcery battle involving slashing and spell-casting broke out immediately.

The only real question was where and how to search the mountains. Anri-san decided the route — the same one she had taken when she accompanied him on wild vegetable picking in the past. With no other leads, we followed that route, clinging to straws.

Additionally, Shoji-kun offered that he might be able to track the Dungeon Manager’s location. He and Inamori-san accompanied us.

After preparing, we left the hotel with Anri-san in the lead and began walking through the snow.

Once we left the main road where cars frequently passed, the path gradually narrowed, and before long, we arrived at a place that looked like the entrance to a mountain trail. It was a place with nothing but a small sign standing in the snow, where the depth made it impossible to tell the true width of the road. However, we found a lead.

”Footprints in a place like this… the timing is suspicious,” Risa said.

As she pointed out, footprints were left on the snow, heading into the mountains. I estimated there were three people based on the number of tracks. It had been a clear day since this morning. It was possible they were just regular people who went for a snow hike, but given the situation, it was suspicious.

”Judging by the residual Mana, one of them is definitely Ogura-san,” Shoji-kun declared while twitching his nose.

Looks like we hit the jackpot.

”Let’s proceed with caution,” Anri-san said.

Anri-san began to follow the footprints remaining in the snow.

While following, I formed a strategy with Chifumi.

”Hey, if we encounter them, how do you think they’ll react?” I asked.

”Hmm, I don’t think they’ll attack us without a word,” Chifumi replied, “but it might be dangerous in a place with no one around.”

”What if the opponent is a Majin and two Majo?” I pressed.

”Nine people gives us three-to-one odds,” she calculated, “but considering the local advantage, I’d say we’re at a disadvantage. If it turns out all six members are there, that’s really bad. Since the relationship with Anri-san doesn’t seem bad, let’s hope persuasion works.”

”Yeah,” I agreed. “In the worst case, we run. Everyone, is that okay?”

 ”Understood,” Chifumi said.

While anticipating the encounter, we advanced along the snowy road.

Less than an hour from the trailhead. A small Mountain hut came into view ahead on the snowy mountain path.

The area around it opened up into a small snowfield.

”This area is where Ogura-san picks wild vegetables.”

As Anri-san tried to approach the Mountain hut, Shoji-kun grabbed her shoulder and stopped her.

”What is it?” Anri-san asked, startled.

 ”They’re inside.”

 ”What!?” Anri-san gasped.

While everyone focused on the Mountain hut, the door opened and people came out.

One man and two women. Everyone was wearing coats of the same pattern, presumably the hotel uniform. Three people, just as the footprints suggested. If that’s all, maybe we can handle this?

 ”Ogura-san! Sakamoto-san! Okuda-san!” Anri-san called out.

 ”……”

 No one reacted.

This feeling… things were starting to look ominous.

Shoji-kun, who had stopped Anri-san, shook his head.

”It’s no good,” he said. “Ogura-san’s scent is wrong. The other two, as well. Something happened to them.”

 ”Something like…?” Anri-san asked.

 ”I don’t know,” Shoji-kun admitted. “It’s a scent I have no memory of smelling.”

”…It might be the influence of the treasure orb,” Anri-san speculated. “Have they already broken the seal?”

’That’s not it,’ Hinoki said. ‘It’s clearly different from my power. If it’s the influence of an Aberration, someone else did it.’

 I relayed Hinoki’s denial.

”If the seal were really broken,” I said, “I don’t think it would be contained with this level of pressure.”

”That’s true,” Anri-san agreed. “It feels more unstable than the usual Ogura-san. Could it be that they aren’t in a situation where they can demonstrate their full ability?”

Shoji-kun denied both my and Anri-san’s opinions.

”No… considering Ogura-san’s Inherent sorcery, this might be bad,” he said grimly.

”Bad, in what way…?” I started.

Just as I was about to ask, the man let out a voice like the howl of a wolf.

 ”Are you serious!?” Risa exclaimed.

 ”What’s happening?” Anri-san asked.

”Lycanthropy,” Shoji-kun said urgently. “An Inherent sorcery for physical enhancement. Be careful!”

Right in front of us, the man’s appearance began to change rapidly.

His height increased, his body thickened. His claws grew long, and his entire body was covered in white fur. Standing over three meters tall, he was an upright white-furred wolf.

Although his physical form changed drastically, the clothes he wore didn’t tear; they covered his body in various places. Battle gear designed with the transformation in mind. In other words, they fully intended to engage in combat using Inherent sorcery.

His face had changed completely into that of a wolf. He bared his fangs and was threatening us.

 ”It’s coming!” Shoji-kun shouted.

Almost simultaneously with his voice, the wolf moved.

The werewolf ran toward us, sliding over the snow.

 ”Asari, now!” I called out.

”Yes!” Asari responded, and a wall of crystal appeared.

As the werewolf tried to move around the wall, Asari conjured more and more walls, appearing one after another so it couldn’t maneuver. The crystal surrounded us in a protective barrier.

Giving up on circling around, the werewolf decided to deal with us by destroying the wall.

Long, sharp claws, clearly possessing high lethality and Ability, extended from both of the werewolf’s hands. While running around the wall, it extended one hand toward the Crystal Wall, grating against it with its claws, trying to shred the crystal.

”It’s going to be alright,” Asari said, her voice carrying the confidence she only showed when she was sure of herself.

The werewolf poured his weight into the assault, burying his claws into the crystal barrier, but he only managed to shave away the outermost surface. If those talons were all he had at his disposal, shattering the [Crystal Wall] would take some serious doing, which bought us a temporary breather.

”Ogura-san, please, listen to me!” Anri-san pleaded, calling out across the wall.

She tried to get him to talk, but the werewolf offered no response. Her pleas for him to disarm were completely ignored.

Shoji-kun turned back to Anri-san, trying to hammer the reality of the situation home.

”It’s no use,” Shoji-kun insisted. “Ogura-san isn’t in his right mind. Trying to talk him down is pointless—we need to neutralize him first!”

”But there has to be another way…” Anri-san hesitated.

”We don’t have time to hesitate!” Shoji-kun barked. “We’re already at a disadvantage here!”

The werewolf’s frame swelled by a full margin.

It wasn’t that his physical flesh was expanding; rather, it was a visual distortion caused by the activation of a self-buffing [sorcery].

Beastification [sorcery] was a highly common form of self-strengthening [Inherent sorcery]. In terms of classification, it belonged to the same lineage as [Oni-fication] [sorcery]. The specific creature one transformed into varied by individual, and this man possessed a beastification [sorcery] that turned him into a werewolf. Judging by his build, I could safely deduce that his speed, sense of smell, and hearing were vastly heightened, and his raw muscular strength had been granted a massive boon as well.

”Ugh, very well… Understood,” Anri-san whispered, then raised her staff.

”It’s alright,” I told her. “If you’re going to use [sorcery], just fire it straight through.”

 ”But I might hit…” Anri-san murmured.

”Asari’s defensive [sorcery] allows our own attacks to pass right through from this side,” I explained.

Anri-san unleashed her [sorcery] toward the werewolf.

A burst of white light shot through the crystal, wrapping tightly around the werewolf’s arms. The light successfully bound his limbs. However, the moment the werewolf flexed his muscles, the light shattered into a million pieces. He had ripped through the binding [sorcery] by sheer, brute force.

Chifumi’s binding [sorcery] missed entirely as well.

The werewolf’s evasive reflexes were incredible. Subduing him was going to be a hell of a chore.

”Should I chip in too?” Risa offered.

 ”Yeah, do it,” I replied.

Risa opened fire with her handgun to keep him pinned down. Inamori-san and Shoji-kun drew their own magic pistols as well. Even for a werewolf, evading a continuous stream of binding [sorcery] while weathering a concentrated barrage from three separate shooters was an impossible task. Trapped by the crossfire, he was finally snared by Chifumi’s binding [sorcery].

Weighted ice shackles clamped down on his limbs, pinning both of his wrists firmly to the ground.

Under the combined weight of Chifumi and Anri-san’s binding magic, the werewolf was forced down onto all fours, his movements completely halted.

Right then, the two women who had remained stagnant until now finally made their move.

One of them leveled her staff and began launching a barrage of ice shells. Asari was directly in the firing line. While Mitsuki and Yurina moved in to provide cover, Asari shifted the focus of her defense, conjuring a [Crystal Wall] to intercept the incoming ice.

The ice projectiles slammed into the barrier one after another.

The heavy drain on her Mana, coupled with the sheer disparity in their total reserves, quickly began to push Asari into a corner.

Meanwhile, the second woman used her Mana to manifest something in mid-air.

Using a massive stone as a core, loose earth rapidly coalesced around it, molding into a perfect sphere before our eyes. It was a [sorcery] I had never seen before. In stark contrast to the rest of us, who were trying to calculate its potential effects, Shoji-kun seemed to recognize it instantly. He bellowed a frantic warning over the din of battle.

”The Beast’s Lesser Moon…! Heavy up the bindings! It’s a high-tier empowerment [sorcery] meant specifically for werewolves!” Shoji-kun screamed.

Before the final echo of his words could fade, the werewolf began to force his body upright.

The miniature moon, now roughly the size of a compact car, shone brilliantly above the woman’s head. Bathed in the artificial moonlight, the werewolf shattered the ice weights into fragments and tore the binding [sorcery] to shreds.

Moving with far greater agility than before, the werewolf lunged straight for Asari.

At this exact moment, Asari’s [Crystal Wall] was calibrated exclusively to fend off the barrage of ice shells. Caught unprepared by the werewolf’s sudden claw strike, the crystal wall tore open. Forcing his way through the weakened breach with a brutal tackle, the werewolf bared his talons and lunged directly at Asari.

Predicting the timing perfectly, I fired off a burst of [Shock Sorcery] to neutralize the incoming ice bullets simultaneously.

Two members of our vanguard team lunged forward to intercept, shielding Asari from the werewolf’s wrath. The first to throw herself into the creature’s path was Mitsuki, her nightstick raised high.

Her body was completely cast in shadow—the telltale sign of her active [Oni-fication] [sorcery]. A heavy blow from her reinforced nightstick collided head-on with the werewolf’s claw strike. The werewolf won that exchange hands down. It wasn’t a matter of her being overpowered; rather, those razor-sharp claws had cleanly sliced her nightstick into round sections.

 ”Whoa—there!” Mitsuki shouted.

Hurling the useless handle of her severed nightstick straight at his face, Mitsuki narrowly dodged a follow-up claw strike.

The werewolf dropped low, practically crawling along the earth as he swept for her legs, but Mitsuki instinctively leaped into the air to evade the blow. As the werewolf lunged upward to impale the airborne Mitsuki, Yurina intervened, drawing her weapon in a swift, fluid motion that mirrored a classic quick-draw strike.

Yurina wasn’t even carrying a bladed weapon at the moment. Yet, she managed to cleanly shear away those razor-sharp talons using a [Severing Sorcery] channeled entirely through her blunt, rounded nightstick. The sheer absurdity of the feat—having his claws severed by a nightstick—caused the werewolf to freeze for a fraction of a second.

The werewolf immediately tried to brush Yurina aside using his remaining arm, the one that still possessed intact claws.

Yurina caught the blow head-on, but the massive weight disparity began to push her back. I stepped in from behind to brace her weight, speaking directly into her ear.

 ”Switching out,” I said.

 ”Right, on it!” Yurina answered.

Swapping positions with Yurina in a fluid, sliding motion, I slipped right past a heavy punch delivered by the werewolf’s clawless fist. The sheer wind pressure of the strike whistled sharply past my ear.

With a sudden, violent rustle, the werewolf’s fur puffed up all at once, unleashing a relentless torrent of backfists, claw swipes, and direct punches. I calculated the trajectories and parried each one. It was a blessing that he wasn’t utilizing any kicks. Due to our height difference, every single one of his attacks originated from above. If I could just dive deep into his guard, it would severely limit his options.

 ”GARRR! Rrrrr!” the werewolf roared.

The moment I slipped past a double-arm downward smash and prepared to retaliate with a fist of my own, the werewolf unhinged his jaws, snapping down at me in a vicious attempt to bite me clean in half.

A sharp, electric tingle shot through my wrist.

 ”GHAH! Gah!” the werewolf screeched.

The werewolf’s attack was clearly intended to reinforce his fangs, snapping my arm clean off or tearing it from its socket. But my own counter-strategy locked into place perfectly—I detonated a pinpoint burst of [Shock Sorcery] directly inside his gaping maw to blast his jaw to pieces, sending the werewolf’s head snapping violently upward.

Though his brain was clearly rattled by the impact, he still tried to use both hands to crush me from the flanks in a desperate, suffocating bear hug. I dove deep beneath his outstretched arms, pressing myself flush against his chest, and unleashed a massive burst of [Shock Sorcery] from point-blank range.

The shockwave detonated violently against his abdomen, blasting the werewolf backward for dozens of meters. He slammed hard into a massive tree before finally grinding to a halt, dark blood spilling freely from his lips. Because I had unleashed that blast without holding anything back, there was a distinct possibility I had caused severe internal bleeding.

Setting aside the fact that he tried to take my arm, this bastard had the nerve to lay a hand on [Strong-Females (Shoji’s group members)]. A retaliation of this magnitude was the bare minimum he deserved.

This worthless mutt is going straight to the pound.

 Summary:

The group gathers to search for the elusive shrine in the snowy mountains, following the trail of the mysterious Dungeon Manager and his subordinates. Tensions escalate upon discovering the manager, who undergoes a sudden, violent metamorphosis into a werewolf. The chapter culminates in an intense confrontation as the group relies on Asari’s defensive sorcery to survive the beast’s onslaught.

The vanguard team struggles to suppress a transformed werewolf whose physical powers are amplified by a mysterious lunar construct. As multiple binding sorceries break under the beast’s increased strength, the protective crystal barrier shatters under a direct tackle. The protagonist steps into close quarters to counter the assault, unleashing a point-blank concussive strike that leaves the opponent severely wounded and unresolved variables regarding internal damage.

 —

 Trivia:

The Dungeon Manager’s group consists of six members total, though only three were initially tracked.

Shoji-kun’s family name is linked to the tradition and potential knowledge of the shrine’s location.

The “Aberration” scent mentioned by Hinoki suggests external interference beyond the manager’s own power.

The manager’s uniform-like coats suggest a level of organizational preparation for the transformation.

Beastification sorcery functions similarly to Oni-fication sorcery, meaning both fall into the same branch of self-strengthening inherent magic systems.

The physical enlargement of the werewolf is not a literal bodily growth, but rather a hallucination caused by high-density self-buffing mana emissions.

Asari’s barrier mechanics possess asymmetric permeability, intentionally allowing friendly attacks to pass through while fully obstructing outside forces.

Yurina successfully severs the monster’s claws without using an edged weapon, applying Severing Sorcery exclusively through a blunt, round nightstick.

The protagonist intentionally targets the inside of the werewolf’s mouth with Shock Sorcery to maximize sensory disruption and break the opponent’s jaw structure.

 Translation Notes:

1 Hinoki is using Kansai-ben, adding a distinct regional flavor to their speech as a spirit or companion entity, emphasizing the frustration of their inability to detect the shrine.
