Volume 6 Chapter 1 New Year’s
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It had been nine months since I started high school.
When I entered school, my childhood friends (four-fifths of them) left me. I felt very worried about my future. But I managed to bring three new girls into my group. Also, one of the childhood friends who had rejected me tried to make up with me. Now the group works well together at full capacity.
Even looking at relationships outside my group, my childhood friends do not seem to hate me right now. Thanks to some preparation from one of them, I even showed my strength over two Strong-Females (Shoji’s group members) outside our group. By luck from a bad situation, I also made a connection with a plain girl, which I still keep today.
I have also built good relationships with my classmates and older students who count as Tsuyo-Osu (Strong-Males). I did this mainly through club activities and the social circles of my group members. Overall, my current situation is much better than I expected at the start of the school year.
I want to keep this progress going without getting careless. I want to finish the third term and move up to the next grade.
On the morning of New Year’s Day, I woke up to find the room completely empty.
Last night, after eating buckwheat noodles to celebrate the New Year, all of us had gone to sleep in the same bedroom naked.
It was a local custom here to avoid sexual activity on the morning of New Year’s Day.
Sleeping completely naked was a physical way to show our commitment to starting the year with a pure mindset.
”Minoru? Are you awake~?”
From outside the room, Chifumi called out. She had probably sensed I was awake.
”Yeah. I’m awake,” I replied.
”Is it okay to start the ‘New Year’s Greetings’~?”
”Mm. Go ahead.”
”Alright, here we go~.”
As I sat up on my futon, the Shoji at the entrance of the room slid open without a sound.
Chifumi and the other four girls were lined up in a neat row, sitting perfectly straight in seiza.
Every single one of them was completely naked, without even underwear. Their breasts and crotches were fully exposed.
However, they were not in a completely raw state. Their faces had makeup on, and their hair was carefully styled. They also wore various accessories to increase their feminine charm. Their matching n**ple chains looked very beautiful.
”Good morning, everyone.”
”””””Good morning!”””””
Greeting me together, the five of them pressed their foreheads against the tatami mats at the same time.
Returning to their upright posture, Chifumi, as the head of the group, had a short ceremonial exchange with me.
”I wish for this to be another excellent year. Will you all lend me your strength?”
”We swear to devote ourselves entirely to Minoru-sama’s service for this whole coming year.”
”I am very pleased by your devotion. I also swear to walk the path of sorcery alongside you with everything I have.”
”Such reassuring words fill our hearts completely. Minoru-sama, please accept the absolute loyalty of our souls.”
Once again, everyone pressed their foreheads to the tatami mats.
At that exact moment, they all gathered their Mana. Each of the five girls extended her own thread of Mana toward me. I gathered my Mana to surround and embrace every strand they offered.
”I accept your souls with gratitude. I will count on you again this year.”
”””””We look forward to serving you!”””””
Raising their heads, I spoke to the five girls who were now staring straight at me.
”Alright, that ends the ‘New Year’s Greetings’. Everyone, you can relax now.”
The girls’ expressions softened right away, and the tension in the room disappeared.
”It’s overrr~” Chifumi groaned.
”I was a little nervous…” Mitsuki confessed.
This was one of those ceremonies you only started doing after entering high school. It was everyone’s first time doing the exchange. Nobody would blame you for getting the wording wrong, but it felt great when you did it perfectly.
Chifumi, Mitsuki, and Asari were born into sorcerer families as Strong-Females (Shoji’s group members). They accepted this kind of traditional ceremony as normal. In contrast, Risa gave a slightly cynical opinion, like her usual self.
”Sorcerers sure are a high-maintenance bunch. We have to go through a formal ceremony like this first thing in the morning on New Year’s Day.”
Yurina, who was supportive of this event, lightly nudged Risa with her elbow to scold her.
”As a way to make your New Year’s resolutions firm, I think it is a pretty great system. It is like when we did our first calligraphy of the year at the Dojo.”
”True. By saying your oath out loud, you make your goals clear. As a system, it might be quite effective.”
Asari, who was wearing contact lenses instead of her usual glasses, shared a bit of trivia.
She struck a pose in front of her chest, extending only the index finger of her left hand upward.
Once, I had told her she looked adorable doing that pose, like an older sister explaining something to a child. Ever since then, she always does that posture when she starts sharing trivia. Cute.
”I hear the exact wording of this exchange varies by region. In some places, every person speaks a line individually. Sometimes local dialects mix into the vows. Down south, there are regions where they do not exchange a single word at all. They do the whole ritual only through eye contact. Also, whether you wear clothes, do not wear clothes, or what you wear if you do put something on—all of that shows different regional styles.”
Chifumi added extra comment, looking proud of herself.
”The one we just did is the exchange that has always been performed in the Tatemiya family. These are the words I learned from Mom~.”
”It is a dialogue just between the leader and the head retainer, right?” Mitsuki muttered.
Mitsuki, who had been listening quietly, gave a sudden shiver. Standing around talking while completely naked was making our bodies cold. The girls had probably been waiting in that state until I woke up. It would be bad if they caught a cold. It was time to get dressed.
First, I had the girls help me change. Having them dress me instead of putting on clothes myself was considered an important part of the ceremony.
After that, I enjoyed watching the girls put on their underwear right in front of me. Watching a girl put on her underwear gave me a nice feeling of superiority. It reminded me that I was the only one lucky enough to see their private moments. It was different from the thrill of taking a girl’s clothes off, but both experiences were equally great.
The way Risa adjusted the fabric of her panties with her fingers after covering her large, firm rear. The way Chifumi removed her n**ple clips and firmly packed her large breasts into her bra. Lovely! Noticing my gaze was locked onto her, Chifumi stuck out the tip of her tongue, teasingly pretending to lick something while giving me a knowing smirk.
Once everyone finished changing into casual indoor clothes, we sat down for our first meal of the year.
The menu had ozoni and osechi.
By throwing a lot of sweet bean-paste filled mochi into a giant pot filled with white miso broth, the local specialty of the 13th District—ozoni with bean-paste mochi—was ready.
On the Chabudai, we spread out the multi-tiered boxes of osechi that we had received from the main house yesterday.
While Chifumi and Risa handled the preparations, I went over to feed everyone inside the Water tank.
I had also prepared a very special meal for the Aberrations.
Knowing that such treats only came a few times a year, Tempura and Kaname took the chance to ask for a huge amount of high-grade feed. Just for today, of course.
While watching Kaname and Tempura look visibly pleased, I shifted my gaze to the side.
’Happy New Year, mate.’
”Happy New Year. I will count on you again this year.”
’Same to you, like.’
Hinoki, who had been waiting by the side of the Water tank, raised their head to greet me.
The sight of them giving a polite little bow was something I had completely gotten used to.
Hinoki generally did not eat regular food.
Apparently, rather than eating cockroaches or earthworms, it was much easier and more efficient from an energy point of view to just consume the Mana I gave them.
Even so, today was New Year’s Day. Since it was a special occasion, I thought Hinoki might as well eat something alongside Tempura and the others. So I had prepared some rakugan for them. I paid extra for high-end rakugan made from the local specialty luxury sugar. Pape, who could not eat no matter how hard he tried, was enthusiastically performing a New Year’s routine by himself in the Doma, as if to shake off his sadness.
The Mannequin dressed in haori and hakama was skillfully rolling a square wooden measuring cup over the surface of a traditional Japanese umbrella. He was actually incredibly good at it. Pape really could do just about anything.
”It’s all ready~!” Chifumi called out.
”Coming,” I replied.
After finishing my greetings to the Aberrations and wishing them well for the year, I went back to the living room.
I joined everyone who had been waiting for me, and together, we started eating.
Even after finishing our meal, it was still early in the morning.
We had plenty of time until noon.
Because of that, we decided to go out for hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year.
”Well then~. We are going to touch up our outfits~. Minoru, please wait outside for us~.”
I was promptly locked out of the detached house by Chifumi and the others.
It was freezing. While waiting, I went to check on Poplar. The sawtooth oak tree was swarming with a massive group of Snow flies.
A specific group centered around a particularly large, fluffy clump of cotton floated closer to me.
”Don’t worry about me. I just came by to take a look.”
After Hinoki sitting on my shoulder translated my words, I handed some rakugan to Poplar as well.
A larger clump of cotton flying alongside Poplar grabbed the rakugan from my hand, and the Snow flies went back into the hollow of the tree.
”That is a rather large Snow fly,” I remarked.
’That is the field ops captain,’ Hinoki explained. ‘Normally, the queen stays safe in the back of the nest to run everything. Working outside is the field guys’ job. The only reason Poplar came out today was to give the first greeting of the New Year.’
”So even the insect world has middle management…”
While chatting with Hinoki, I watched the Snow flies as they drifted through the air.
The ones in charge of gathering food, the ones in charge of guarding the perimeter… As I watched closely, I could tell from their sizes and movement patterns that they were divided into several small groups, each with different roles.
I suppose for insects who were still in the middle of building their nest, New Year’s Day and a regular day were the same when it came to their daily chores.
After some time, I returned to the detached house to find that Chifumi and the others had already finished changing.
Every single one of them was dressed in a stunning kimono.
”Look, look~ It feels totally like New Year’s~ How do we look?” Chifumi asked excitedly.
”Everyone looks incredibly cute.”
This was the first time I had ever seen them in kimonos.
Using each girl’s distinct image color as a base, the garments were decorated with gorgeous patterns perfect for a festive day. The one Risa was wearing in particular looked very expensive.
When dressed in kimonos, everyone’s body shapes were beautifully shown off. They looked like anything but a small, plain group.
Even by this world’s standards, we looked like a pretty exceptional bunch.
”To be honest, these are simplified kimonos,” Risa explained. “If we wore real furisode, the fitting process would take too much time. These just look like furisode on the outside. Even so, it still took us quite a while.”
”Does that mean you can change out of them quickly too?” I asked.
”Well, not as fast as regular clothes, but they can be put on and taken off in a relatively short time.”
While having that conversation with Risa, we all went to the main house to exchange New Year’s greetings with my parents and the rest of the Tatemiya family members. After taking a group photo and receiving our New Year’s pocket money, we finally set off for the shrine.
First, we went toward the station. After boarding a train, we got off at the closest station to one of the most famous shrines in the whole 13th District. Since it was New Year’s Day, the area in front of the station was packed with people.
In the middle of the crowd, I spotted a very familiar group of faces.
It was Manaka and her crew.
”Sorry to keep you waiting,” I called out.
”Yes, you are a little later than planned,” Manaka replied.
”…In a situation like this, should we say we only just arrived ourselves?” one of her companions muttered.
”There is no need to tell such lies to Minoru,” Manaka answered smoothly.
Seriously, she always has a comeback for everything.
”Well, putting that aside… Happy New Year. I will count on you guys again this year.”
”Happy New Year. We look forward to working with you this year as well,” Manaka answered back.
The greetings between the leaders ended, and the members began greeting one another.
Just as I had mentioned in our usual conversations, I was visiting the shrine for the New Year today with Manaka and her group.
It was not a surprise. It was exactly as planned. Even I have moments when I am consulted in advance instead of being left out.
While everyone in my group was dressed in traditional Japanese clothes, Manaka and her friends were all in Western clothes.
Manaka, for instance, wore a coat over a sweater with a scarf wrapped around her neck—perfectly normal winter outerwear.
Manaka, Sawa, Yui, and Yuu were clearly here. Megumi and Miku were also there.
Since the surprise introduction during our recent trip had been a success, I suppose these two would be joining whenever there was an event from now on.
Once the standard greetings were done, it was time to head out.
”Alright, let’s go.”
With me taking the lead, we started walking, following the flow of the crowd.
Our destination was a shrine well known in these parts. If you asked anyone for a New Year’s shrine recommendation, this would be the first name they mentioned. A staircase of hundreds of stone steps led up to the main sanctuary halfway up the mountain. Souvenir shops and various other stores lined both sides of the path. The approach, which usually had plenty of space, was completely packed with people.
”It’s so hot… I’m starting to regret wearing a kimono…”
Chifumi let out a faint complaint, her voice trailing off. I could see beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
Everyone else was in a similar situation.
They were all in good shape. The stone steps were quite steep, but climbing them had not left them out of breath. There were plenty of other visitors dressed in kimonos, and when that many bundled-up people packed together, the trapped heat alone was too much.
While we were sweating despite the middle of winter, Manaka and her group looked perfectly comfortable in their practical, easy-to-move-in outfits.
”Minoru, how is it? Good?”
”I want your opinion☆”
Right on cue, the gothic-lolita fashion twins came over to bother me.
They wore full-body, black dress-like outfits. Ribbons of various sizes adorned their chests and cuffs. The color schemes of their coats and scarves were slightly different, but everything else was identical. I figured Yuu was just going along with Yui’s fashion sense.
”Well, it suits you.”
Yui certainly liked an unusual style, but because she had a great body, she could pretty much wear anything.
I knew I had no fashion sense. Yet, Yui had often asked for my thoughts on her clothes since we were kids. Because I always approved of her choices without giving clear criticism, her fashion sense had become completely extreme. I did not mean to take all the credit, but I felt a bit guilty, like I had been a bad influence on her.
”Yay.”
”Praise☆Got it☆”
The twins struck a strange signature pose together.
Even I could tell that pose was a mistake. No sense.
”Stop it. That’s embarrassing.”
Having Chifumi take a picture of them seemed to satisfy the two.
As the twins drifted away, Megumi and Miku came to take their place.
”Tatemiya-kun, you come to this shrine too?”
”Well, yeah. I think most sorcerers around here come here.”
As I climbed the stone steps while talking with Megumi, Miku joined the conversation.
”We go to a small local shrine every year. That is the only place our family goes to. Going to other places is up to each person.”
I reached out and thoroughly ruffled Miku’s fluffy hair as she looked up at me.
”Fuaa♡ I want more pets… haa haa…”
Miku was deliberately playing the dog role to create her own image. Calculated. But hey, I did not exactly hate the effort. There, there, good girl.
”Woof♡♡”
Miku let out a blissful sound.
Once I finished petting her, Manaka walked up to us.
”Are you already touching my group members this early in the New Year?”
”That sounds bad. It is just a little communication.”
”For ‘a little,’ you seem to have some wicked feelings.”
I wondered which of us she was talking to.
Because Miku, who was panting, was giving off a pretty strange vibe herself.
Sawa spoke up with an annoyed look.
”There is an old story about giving money to a dog and having it visit the shrine for you. Minoru, if you do not feel like walking, why not have Miku go instead?”
”That story is hundreds of years old. Nobody does that anymore. I want to visit myself.”
”Woof!”
Miku kept begging for more head pats.
Watching this, Manaka sighed in annoyance.
”…I wish she would stop acting like a dog.”
Among all the chatter, we finally arrived at the main sanctuary halfway up the mountain.
We lined up, tossed our coins into the offering box, and offered our prayers.
May this year pass without any major incidents…
After praying, we moved to the observation deck to look down at the world below.
Standing beside me, Asari spoke up.
”The view is quite different from the 5th District, isn’t it?”
”Yeah. First of all, there is no snow.”
”In the 13th District, it only snows a few times a year.”
”To be exact, this area of the 13th District.”
It was simply that the mountain range running north to south blocked the snow clouds. On the other side of those mountains, the snow piled up quite a bit. We just never bothered to go there.
”I want to go again.”
”Next time, no trouble. I just want to enjoy the trip.”
”Same here.”
”Going there in summer to escape the heat might be nice too. I will ask papa about it.”
Risa joined the conversation.
”I do not want to cause trouble for him.”
”It will be fine. If anything, as papa, he might even help us because ‘that person’ caused trouble.”
”Then I will take him up on it, as long as I do not seem too pushy.”
”Hehe. Got it.”
While I was talking with Risa, I noticed a few guys around our age glancing in our direction.
Smiling in her brilliant kimono, Risa looked like a noble young lady. Her slender figure was elegantly hidden by the rich fabric. The Naruse family estate was incredibly wealthy. She was a real, genuine rich young lady.
”Minoru~Risa-chan~. We are going to draw fortune slips~”
”Oh. Wait for me.”
I followed behind Chifumi and the others as they headed toward the fortune-slip stalls.
Several fortune boxes were set up, each with its own line.
Everyone split up to queue. The battle had already begun with this single choice. I chose to line up right behind Sawa. There was not any deep meaning behind it. I just felt her line had slightly fewer people.
Noticing I had lined up behind her, Sawa turned around with a smirk.
”Minoru, you know what is up.”
”What?”
”That fortune box is the hottest one right now.”
”You are just making things up again…”
Sawa’s face soured, probably picking up on my annoyance.
”Do not underestimate my observation skills.”
”Sure, sure.”
Exchanging those casual jokes, it was soon Sawa’s turn.
She shook the container, pulled a stick out, and said the number to the shrine maiden. The fortune Sawa got was… Well, before checking that, I needed to focus on my own draw.
”…Here!”
With a soft clatter, I pulled a stick from the fortune box and showed the number to the shrine maiden.
The plump shrine maiden handed over a slip of paper matching the number. It did not look like I had drawn the same number as Sawa. The character printed at the top of the paper I received was…
”Small Luck.”
A perfectly average result, neither particularly good nor bad.
Seemingly confident of her victory from the look on my face, Sawa proudly showed off her own paper. Middle Luck.
”I win.”
”Dammit… Well, I will honestly admit defeat.”
I was not going to cheat by drawing another one.
”Minoru~How was yours~?”
The paper Chifumi showed me had the same result as mine: Small Luck. As expected of my witch. We were perfectly matched even in places like this.
”Everyone seems to have drawn.”
Manaka approached alongside Yui and the others. The characters for Great Luck were clearly visible on the paper she held. A truly seductive woman, Manaka even had fortune on her side.
”…Wait a minute.”
Giving off a gloomy look, Risa raised her hand.
”I am going to draw again. Everyone go ahead.”
”What is wrong? Was it bad?”
”Something like that.”
Saying little, Risa lined up in the fortune queue once more.
The rest of us moved to the designated area to tie up our fortunes. Talking with Yurina, it turned out that Risa’s behavior was normal for her. To think a cheater had been right next to me this whole time.
”Risa has bad luck with fortunes. She always redraws until she gets a good result.”
”Huh…”
”She will be satisfied with an average result or better. By the way, this is mine.”
True to the words of Yurina, who was now showing off her own Great Luck with a smug grin, Risa approached us with a sigh of relief after her redraw. She showed the text on her new slip to me as I waited.
”Small Luck. Now I should be able to get through this year safely.”
”What was it before?”
”This.”
The other slip Risa held out had the character for “Misfortune” on it.
”You do not see that result often. In a way, it is rarer than Great Luck, is not it?”
”For me, Misfortune is not rare. It is the result I am most familiar with.”
She explained while skillfully tying the two fortunes to the rack.
”My worst year, I drew Misfortune three times in a row.”
”…I see.”
I could not find the right words to comfort her.
Book 6 is supposed to be the classic noontide development. Probably.

Summary:
The chapter begins with Minoru reflecting on his successful integration into high school and his squad’s growth, followed by a ritualistic New Year’s greeting performed naked. The morning proceeds with a traditional meal, interaction with his Aberration pets, and a visit to a local shrine. The chapter ends with an encounter with Manaka’s group, leaving the interactions of the New Year’s visit as the immediate next plot point.
Ascending a crowded mountain path packed with thousands of shrine visitors, Minoru and his extended circle of acquaintances gather to celebrate the New Year’s tradition. While navigating lighthearted banter about the suffocating heat from traditional kimonos and the absurd gothic-lolita outfits worn by the twins, the group transitions into drawing classic fortune paper slips. As competitive comparisons yield typical mid-tier luck results for most, a stubbornly superstitious Risa actively resets her destiny after drawing an exceptionally rare and terrible curse token, leaving her final fortune an unresolved variable for the coming months.
