Volume 4 Chapter 48 Green Tea
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Across the white, sandy beach, I could see the reddish-brown houses, and standing tall and isolated among them was the white Viscount’s Palace. At long last, I had reached the offshore waters of the Royal Capital Ram, in the Amazoness kingdom of Nyunpai.
As we drew closer to land, mid-sized Dhows (traditional sailing vessels) appeared out of nowhere, surrounding the “Izumo” from the left, right, and rear while maintaining a distance of over a hundred meters. (Are we being driven out? This doesn’t look good,) I thought. Just then, an order for combat readiness was issued to the Artillery Department.
Per our prior briefing, I took my station at the artificial shishi-odoshi (deer scare water device)1 on the foredeck, Chief Petty Officer Bebel stood atop the poop deck, and the rest of the crew were stationed evenly around the ship. We hadn’t loaded the cartridges into the coilguns (magnetic projectile weapons) yet, as we were still in the preparation phase. It was also to ensure no one fired accidentally due to nerves.
It was only then that they seemed to finally fire up the boilers; the obstructive sails were furled, black smoke began to pour from the smokestacks, and a [fixed-wing drone] for reconnaissance took flight from the bridge.
”I wonder what’s going to happen,” Pole said, having finished adjusting the triangular sail connected to the bow mast. He asked me with a look of concern.
There were about twenty mid-sized Dhows surrounding the “Izumo.” If we were to start a war, we could sink half of them in our opening volley. If we followed that up by bombing the white Viscount’s Palace on the shore, the enemy would, under normal circumstances, likely lose the will to fight. But these were the Amazoness, a warrior race. They probably wouldn’t be cowed by such a thing and would undoubtedly attack us with every trick in their book.
If it came to that, we were a small force. The enemy was on their home turf. I doubted there were only the twenty ships currently surrounding us. I felt like the enemy had tens of times more combatants than our crew of less than fifty. So, if we could escape, that would be a miracle; nine times out of ten, we’d be captured, and at best, we’d end up as prisoners of war, or worse, sold into slavery.
Therefore, engaging in combat was a bad idea. Our best bet was to talk our way out and run.
”I don’t think there will be a battle. Probably,” I said.
I offered this hopeful observation, and Pole replied with a wry smile, “I suppose so,” before returning to his duties.
Even though I’d been demoted, I was still middle management, so I was privy to the general outline of the situation. The Captain had explained that once the “Izumo” approached the Royal Capital Ram, they would certainly make contact, and the issue was how we would negotiate and how we would make our exit. The talk of Rosa had faded, and the premise that negotiations would prevent a war felt like nothing more than wishful thinking.
”What if there is no such contact?” I asked.
When I dared to ask, the Captain insisted that such a thing was absolutely impossible. But the enemy was a warrior race; if they challenged us to a war of attrition without a word, there was no way we could win.
”Wouldn’t it be better to consider an exit strategy?” I suggested.
When I made my suggestion, Fredys, the deck crew foreman, agreed, so she nodded. However, there was no concrete discussion on the matter at the time.
While I was lost in those memories, the ship drew closer to land, and I began to be able to identify the people standing at the water’s edge looking our way. I didn’t know what was being discussed on the bridge right now, but the number of Dhows that appeared to be Amazoness had increased to thirty. However, they merely kept us surrounded; not a single ship approached.
It was hard to tell from the foredeck, but judging by the voice of the lookout in the masthead, the port of the Royal Capital Ram seemed to be a little further south. As the ship changed course, the surrounding Dhows shifted their formation to match ours. I was impressed that they were so well-trained despite using sailing ships, while at the same time, it made me realize that retreating wouldn’t be a simple task.
Just then, the [fixed-wing drone] returned. I was hoping to understand the situation from a bird’s-eye view when the next reconnaissance [fixed-wing drone] took off immediately.
”Petty Officer Larry,” I heard the voice of Department Head Tatyana, who had become my superior officer. When I turned around, she was leaning out of the bridge window and beckoning me over.
”You can leave that there. Come to the bridge,” she said.
Well, since no ships were approaching and there were no soldiers on the beach nocking arrows, I left the artificial shishi-odoshi (deer scare) and went up to the bridge.
”Excuse me,” I said, and after saluting, the Captain beckoned to me. He had his usual surly expression, but I didn’t think I’d ever seen him beckon anyone before.
”I have a request,” he said.
”I decline,” I replied.
It wasn’t an order, so I should be able to refuse. After all, I only had a bad feeling about this.
”Then, it is an order!” he said.
(Here we go, I thought. This is definitely not a decent mission.)
”From here, we will round the sandbar cape and dock the ‘Izumo’ at the harbor pier,” he said.
(You’ve got to be kidding.)
”So, you are to go ashore and negotiate the return of Rosa with the Amazoness,” he said.
(I knew it.)
”Um, shouldn’t the Captain be the one to go?” I asked.
”The Captain cannot leave the ship,” he said.
(Liar. At Hodayn Port, you went to the Administrator’s house and bedded a woman in the pleasure district, didn’t you? And in Palermo, too.)
”Second Lieutenant Larry, you handled the negotiations in Suez once before, didn’t you? You are the right person for the job,” he said.
(That damn Captain. He usually calls me “Petty Officer,” but now he called me “Second Lieutenant.” He must want to say that as a Second Lieutenant, an officer, it wouldn’t be an act of insubordination to negotiate with another country.)
”You may bring Alyona and Kenze as your interpreters,” he said.
I refused that. If we had to run back, Alyona would definitely be a liability. Kenze had high combat capabilities and I wanted to take her, but she was an Amazoness like them, just from a different origin, so there was a possibility of a conflict.
In the end, I chose to accompany me with two members of my squad: Chief Petty Officer Bebel, who had high mana, and Sabby, the tall, skinny Corporal.
”Professors, is such a small number really okay?” Katarina asked.
Katarina looked worried—or rather, it sounded like she wanted me to take her along.
”It’s fine. Provide support from the air,” I said.
After saying that, I had the girl from the flight squad, who was piloting the reconnaissance [fixed-wing drone], share her visual feed with me. The port of the Royal Capital Ram was inside a sandbar that rose up like Miho no Matsubara (famous pine grove in Japan), and the water seemed shallow. If I didn’t keep a close eye on the escape route, we might get stuck during low tide.
Just in case, I passed that instruction on to the pilot.
”Hey, are you kiddin’ me?” Sabby asked.
One of the people I had selected, Sabby, started complaining. Well, that was to be expected.
”It’s because I’m countin’ on you that much,” I said.
”I don’t need none of that,” she said.
(Tsk. So, Sabby wouldn’t be easily talked around.)
”But it’s an order,” I said.
”Then do I get some kinda hazard pay or somethin’?” she asked.
(I don’t get any of that, either.)
”The guy who didn’t follow orders ended up naked, tied up behind his back, and put on display, didn’t he?” Bebel said.
(Chief Petty Officer Bebel, nice follow-up! Even if it was self-deprecating for me.)
At those words, Sabby made a face like she’d bitten into a bitter bug and flicked her ear’s pia sling (ear piercing) with her finger.
”So, then,” Bebel said, bumping her body into me. “If we make it back, let me have a go at you, yeah?”
(That’s where your head’s at?) But being told by a woman to “let her have a go,” the act with Maria came to mind, and I got goosebumps.
”Come on, if I don’t have something like that to look forward to, I ain’t got the motivation,” she said.
”Well, then, I’m in on that too,” Sabby said.
Sabby was the one who said she was in. Female mages are generally high in libido. Moreover, being military personnel, their lives could end at any moment. It’s only natural for them to pursue their desires without hiding them.
At this point, is sexual activity the ultimate bait for using these guys effectively? If so, it can’t be helped. I’ll use it.
”Understood. But let me negotiate the timing,” I said.
I implicitly conveyed that Katarina and the others were waiting in the wings, and though she said it was a hassle, she agreed.
Finally, we could move on to discussing the operation.
By the time the “Izumo” rounded the sandbar cape, not only mid-sized but also small Dhows had appeared, and the total had exceeded fifty ships. At this rate, it would be impossible to escape by any simple means.
Wondering what we were going to do, I went up to the bridge for one last confirmation. I found that the assembled suicide [fixed-wing drones] numbered more than ten and were scattered on the floor; there was soon going to be no room to stand on the bridge.
”I will ask for the return of Rosa, but since there is no hostage (Nikaure Saba-princess) to exchange, I think it will be a formality. Shall we ask them to lift the siege on the ‘Izumo’ at that time?” I asked.
I communicated this, but the Captain just kept his eyes closed and listened.
”Shouldn’t the Captain be the one to go, after all?” Foreman Fredys asked.
However, the Captain didn’t nod, and the ship slowly approached the pier. A silence hung in the sweltering bridge for a while.
”I leave everything to Second Lieutenant Larry,” he said.
(He ran away.)
”Just to confirm, please wait until we get back,” I said.
”Until the military personnel take the appropriate action,” he said.
(This guy.)
”Use the portside Craft Engine (magical propulsion system) and reverse,” he said.
(You’ve got to be kidding.) In the past, when docking at a pier, I think the ship would head bow-first toward the land. And when departing, the ship would back out.
”You’re fully prepared to run, aren’t you?” I asked, unable to help making that sarcastic remark.
”Of course. In this desperate situation, it is an essential action to ensure that even one crew member survives,” he said.
”Then, is there a possibility that you’ll abandon us?” I asked.
”Naturally, that exists,” he said.
(Right. Maybe I should just join the Amazoness. The Amazoness here seem to wear bikini armor without exception. Spending time looking at bouncing tits might not be half bad.)
”Don’t worry, if you get captured, I’ll have this shoved in to make sure you don’t suffer,” Katarina said.
Katarina was looking at me with a tragic face. It seemed she thought I would be captured and tortured. So, she was saying she would send me to the other side with a suicide [fixed-wing drone] so I wouldn’t suffer. How twisted can one’s expression of love get?
”Don’t worry, even if I become a prisoner, I’ll find a way to return to the country,” I said.
I didn’t want to be killed because of her assumptions, so I said that.
I went down to the deck, shouldered the coilguns, wrapped the gun-belt around my waist, and, despite the sweltering heat, put on my mage robe. The other two wore leather belts over their sailor suits, had the coilguns at their waists, and carried the box containing the Treasure Sword to be presented to the Queen of this land. This Treasure Sword was one of several identical ones loaded on the ship for diplomatic purposes.
While doing so, the ship approached the pier in reverse. Using a buffer made of cork scraps, it docked successfully, even while bouncing.
As the ship stopped, people gathered around in droves. Most of them looked like Black laborers.
The three of us jumped down from the ship’s hull, and Bebel and the others received the box containing the Treasure Sword from the deck crew men.
(Now, what should we do?) I couldn’t understand the language of the Black people at all, and there wasn’t an atmosphere of them wanting to make contact with us.
Just then, two white Amazoness rode toward us on horses about two sizes bigger than the warhorses we used, pushing people aside as they came.
”What did you come here to do?” an Amazoness in a bikini armor so skimpy it looked like her nipples might pop out at any moment asked me in pristine Schweilitz (language of the Schweilitz region). I felt that if they already knew who we were, there was no need to answer, but—
”We wish to have an audience with Her Majesty,” I said, keeping my voice as low as possible to convey our request.
”And what business do you have with Her Majesty?” she asked.
”We wish to negotiate,” I said.
I didn’t mention that I couldn’t possibly bring up Rosa’s name here, for obvious reasons.
”Negotiate? What exactly? Your Rosa is no longer here,” the other Amazoness sneered.
”I said we wish to negotiate,” I said.
It wasn’t that I was falling for the goading of a mere lackey, but since we’d come this far, I couldn’t just back down easily. I needed to bring back at least some information.
Bebel and the others, however, seemed to have different ideas; Bebel gripped my wrist and used telepathy to urge me to turn back, but I ignored her.
”Hmph. Don’t regret this,” the Amazoness said.
”Are you sure? We are here as envoys of King Schweilitz, Heinrich IV,” I said.
In times like these, experience has taught me that the person who makes the biggest scene wins. Predictably, once I brought up the King’s name, the sneering vanished from their faces.
”And who are you? I am Commander Gaia Datsu of the Royal Capital Defense Force. And this is Vice-captain Rossi Macau,” she said.
(Eh? They actually introduced themselves. What do I do? If I say ‘Artillery Department Squad Leader, Second Lieutenant Larry Fee Getys,’ they’ll probably just laugh at me again.)
”I am the First Founder of the Fee Grand Principality, Sámi I,” I said.
It was a title meant for bluffing, but saying it out loud sent a chill down my spine. Still, it seemed effective; both Amazonesses dismounted from their horses.
The spectators retreated smoothly, and from behind the horseback units, Amazoness infantry armed with spears surrounded us, keeping their distance. The crew of the Izumo was also watching us from the deck and the masts.
’I have heard of the Sámi I,’ the Commander said to my surprise, speaking in Rus.
’I am grateful for that. We wish to have an audience with Her Majesty,’ I replied.
’Before that, would you allow us to look upon your noble face?’ she asked.
If she was going to ask like that, I didn’t see much choice; I pushed my robe’s hood back.
”What? You’re just a snot-nosed kid,” the Vice-captain, whose nipples were nearly spilling out of her armor, mocked me. The Commander’s attitude, however, was different.
”No. I heard that when he was in his mid-teens, he united two regions and one principality that speak the Sámi language and secured their independence. Currently, his eldest son, Grand Duke Reinhardt, governs the country,” she said.
She knew quite a lot. And this was thousands of kilometers away from these equatorial lands, in a frigid northern region. As I stared in shock, she knelt on one knee and offered a bow.
”Is that so?” the Vice-captain asked.
The nipple-baring Vice-captain, following the Commander’s lead, reluctantly knelt on one knee and lowered her head as well. The surrounding infantry followed suit. It felt a bit too convenient, but it was certainly better than being tied up and dragged away.
”Your Majesty, please forgive our rudeness,” the Commander said.
Being called “Your Majesty” made me feel itchy. At the Commander’s signal, she told us they would take care of the “Treasure Sword” we were presenting, and we were ushered into a waiting carriage.
”Squad Leader, who are you exactly?” Sabby asked the moment we stepped into the carriage.
”I was just a bit of a troublemaker a while ago,” I said.
I said it as a joke, but I should have Bebel explain it to her later. She knows enough of the truth.
Eventually, the carriage stopped, the door opened, and when we stepped out, a white-walled Viscount’s Palace, heavily influenced by Scripture Church (religious organization) architecture, loomed before us.
”This way, please,” the Commander said.
Led by the Defense Force Commander and Vice-captain, the three of us entered the palace. We walked through an arcade where the garden side was left wide open and were shown into a small waiting room next to the building’s main hall.
”Her Majesty is preparing, so please wait here for a moment,” she said.
It was VIP treatment. Meanwhile, Bebel and Sabby were even more restless than me. Like country bumpkins, they were staring up at the geometric patterns on the ceiling with their mouths agape.
”Calm down,” I said.
When I reprimanded them, they finally closed their mouths. And then, they actually served us genuine green tea.
”Is this…?” I asked.
The one who brought it was a small child. She had a cute face, but a pink jewel dangled from her forehead. If she was an Amazoness… could it be?
”As expected of the Founder, you recognize the tea?” the Commander asked, having returned after stepping out. She boasted that it was imported from the Great Qin Empire (eastern empire) in the east of the Central Continent. As she claimed, it possessed a subtle sweetness and umami hidden within the astringency.
”This is excellent tea. And it’s brewed perfectly,” I said.
”You can tell?” she asked.
For some reason, she was overjoyed. As I savored the green tea for the first time in ages, the Commander looked at me with a serious gaze.
”I have a request to make of you, a personal matter,” she said.
(What? So sudden.) I was surprised by her expression, and then, to my shock, she slid off her chair and performed a kowtow (formal bow of respect).
”Commander, what are you doing? Please, raise your head,” I said.
(What is going on?) I couldn’t grasp the situation. If other Amazonesses saw this, it definitely wouldn’t be good. I walked over to her side and placed a hand on her shoulder, begging her to look up.
”Will you hear my request?” she asked.
”I… well, if it’s within my power,” I said.
At those words, the Commander beamed and took my hand.
”You are truly the greatest masurao (hero) of our age.2“
(That’s a bit much for flattery.)
”Would you be willing to share your seed with my child?” she asked.
(Wait.)
”It is the child who served the tea just now,” she said.
(Eh? Ah… so that’s what Amazoness children are. Wait, they have…) I wanted to say “That’s impossible,” but the words wouldn’t come out.
She stared straight into my eyes, pleading, and I found it difficult to say no. I just sat there, mouth opening and closing like a fish.
”It’s fine, isn’t it? Second Lieutenant Larry has already sired over ten children,” Warrant Officer Bebel said something completely unnecessary.
”Then, I–,” I said.

Just as I was about to say it was impossible, an attendant entered to tell us that Her Majesty was ready.
”Please stay at our home tonight. I will have Kyoyo prepare everything,” the Commander said.
(Kyoyo? Was that the name of the child from before? Wait, wait, wait. I didn’t plan on staying in this land tonight.)

• Izumo – The iron-hulled ship serving as the primary vessel for the protagonist and his crew.
• Bebel – Sergeant Major Hagen is a confident, high-mana artillery NCO aboard the Izumo in the protagonist’s division. A Larland War veteran with white teeth and a blunt, teasing demeanor, she uses aggressive, dark humor to motivate her squad. Once rescued by the protagonist, she knows his past, frequently provokes him with mischievous comments, but acts protectively to save him from danger.
• Pole – An orphaned Celt soldier and anxious Izumo sail-handler who knows the terrain and speaks Turku. Traveling with Larry and Kenze as Earnest’s associate, he respects the protagonist, serving as their guide while seeking his first love’s freedom. Gossipy and anxious, he seeks reassurance from superiors, having quit gambling to avoid slavery, and currently fears the surrounding Dhows.
• Captain – The middle-aged commanding officer of the Izumo is outwardly calm, experienced, and traditional, masking a ruthless, pragmatic leader who prioritizes vessel survival over subordinates and civilians. While rarely reprimanding his men, he will execute deserters. Bebel reports directly to him, holding orders to return to Kure should the protagonist fail to return from their mission.
• Rosa – A genius dwarf-human hybrid engineer and Larry’s former student, she designed the Izumo and fought beside him in the Fifty-Third Defense Battle. Abducted from Suez by Amazonesses to build black ships, her immense knowledge and potential Kush collaboration pose a major geopolitical threat. Currently sought by Larry and the Major, the Queen questions if the protagonist intends to kill her.
• Fredys – Izumo’s female deck foreman and section chief is a forceful, pragmatic Inland Sea expert. Maintaining a professional tone, she supports logical decisions and Larry’s proposals. From the bridge, she manages fleets, logistics, captives, and discipline. She interprets Turku, runs betting pools, works with Roland, acts refined around Francis, defends Kenze, and is rumored to be a shotacon.
• Ho – Ho is the family name of Oliver, a 17-year-old deck crew member and comrade of the protagonist. As a member of the military unit that defended Garao Village, the young man was ultimately murdered during a night watch, slaughtered alongside Marx-san.

Cynical of Maria and the Captain, he mediates crew drama, negotiates foreign talks, and is restrained for refusing orders.
• Administrator – The official of Hodayn Port who previously held Alyona as a slave and refused to return her.
• Palermo – A target location where a battle and reparations negotiation took place.
• Alyona – A devout Rus Orthodox interpreter aboard the Izumo, whose physical features resemble Maria. Once happily married, she was enslaved by the Hodayn Administrator and retained by Rhein. Though she seems timid under the Captain’s orders—prompting Larry to leave her behind as dead weight—beneath her submissive exterior lies a latent sadistic streak capable of clinical cruelty and easy dominance.
• Kenze – A muscular, brown-skinned Amazoness with a “compact dynamite” frame and short hair under a niqab, this lethal former Takshurgan operative has elite combat skills and uses artificial speech while guarding Larry. From a different tribe than Nyunpai’s, she bears a dragon tattoo, can lay eggs, and nurses her child Zaboo. Highly observant, she reads Rhein, fears capture, and serves as an interpreter.
• Al – Alberto (Al), a massive red‑haired man recently wed to Mary, lives near the Dish Basin. He’s a companion of Hans, helping intimidate and rally elders as a villager and leader.
• Corporal – A combat engineer with shattered legs and ribs who admires Captain Bours.
• Sabby – The protagonist’s subordinates include a tall, lanky, curly-haired artillery Corporal with high mana, who is crude, rebellious, and motivated by incentives. The other is a polite, anxious Amazoness who uses formal language but acts like a restless country bumpkin. She questions the protagonist’s identity, struggles under pressure, and reports his condition to Pamela.
• Katarina – A tall, voluptuous 30-year-old Izumo flight squad leader and Chief Researcher in a sailor uniform. A volatile, telepathic Mage with mission authority, she maintains formal decorum while commanding her crew to return safely. She pilots drones under Larry but harbors an intense, possessive desire to mercy-kill him if captured. She pressures Rhein and is the protagonist’s jealous, abusive mistress and captive.
• Maria – Strikingly beautiful, six-month-pregnant Universal Church bridge mage and Suez crew member who handles her Captain’s dirty work with sadistic precision. Thomas’s widow and daughter of Ifens and Therese, she possesses gorilla strength, lethal combat skills, and massive mana rivaling a Major. Adept in coilguns and interrogation, she uses Princess Nikaure’s memories for intel and holds a grudge against Larry, on whom she exerts significant physical and magical demands.
• Mar – A battle‑hardened veteran, clad in worn armor, uses door panels as shields and captures enemy crossbows; Larry’s comrade who teases him about his sister‑in‑law’s pampering, known as Martin to his companion Edmond.
• Nikaure Saba – The Queen’s child, whom she wishes to adopt. The Queen’s daughter, held as a political pawn. The protagonist offers to advocate for her release in exchange for technology agreements.
• Nikaure – A beautiful Amazoness princess, tribe ambassador, and sister of Ade-Saba with a compact, muscular physique, dark skin, sharp eyes, and a royal blue forehead gemstone. Ruled by a king involved in a hostage exchange, this political power holds a captive feared for execution. It also ordered the confirmation of Princess Rosa’s corpse, driving a scheme that the Queen has caught onto.
• Heinrich IV – The King of the Kingdom of Schuberitz. He shows a degree of mercy and personal interest in the condemned, personally addressing Alec Reinisch and granting a commutation to Okama-san.
• Heinrich – The IV King of Schweilitz, once a mercenary turned monk and Proton Order leader, rules with cold calculation. He executes his own sons, gifts formal coats and Golems to allies, and employs contradictory tactics. Clad in a formal coat, he commands the kingdom that the protagonist writes to for food aid, and he led the Royal Army into Larland.
• Commander Gaia – The commander of the Amazoness tribe forces. She is tall, powerfully built with dense muscle definition, and bears a dragon tattoo of an ascending dragon on her back. She speaks with clipped, procedural authority and gives her word as a binding promise.
• Commander – An Amazoness military leader who appeared as a man leading the mercenary press-gang at the south gate. Commanding and formal, she hosts the First Rite ceremony, serving as an authoritative attendant and overseer to the protagonist.
