Volume 6 Chapter 18 Risa’s Circumstances
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I could see Risa’s mother’s shoulders slump dejectedly, even from a distance. One half of herself—Shadow—had passed. She must have understood what fate awaited the remaining half. She offered no resistance, just stayed frozen with her head bowed, unmoving.
Wait—what about Risa?
I rushed to Risa’s side, where she lay sprawled on her back. Her chest rose and fell slowly. She was breathing quiet. When I placed my hand on her chest, I felt the beat of her heart. She didn’t seem to be in critical danger.
”Made it! Wait, Minoru? Risa!? What happened!?” Mitsuki called out.
”Risa-san! Are you okay!?” Asari added.
Mitsuki and Asari appeared together at just the right moment. Perfect timing.
”Mitsuki, use your healing on Risa,” I said.
”Leave it to me!” she replied.
Mitsuki placed her hand on Risa’s chest and began her restorative magic, immediately noticing Risa’s abnormal condition.
”Huh… what is this? I’m feeling incredible Mana inside Risa,” she murmured.
”That’s Hinoki’s power. It’s far denser than what Clam or Pape have,” I explained.
”There’s no way a human could withstand that… but she seems fine. Weird,” Mitsuki said, clearly surprised.
’Bro, there’s Asunaro inside sis too. Any chance you could heal her as well?’ Hinoki asked.
I agreed to Hinoki’s request and instructed Mitsuki.
”Mitsuki, there’s another entity inside Risa. Could you heal that one too?” I asked.
”Hm… oh, this one? Are you sure?” she replied.
”Yeah. It’s not hostile. It’s fine,” I assured her.
”Roger that,” she said.
’Thanks, bro,’ Hinoki said.
We’d only won this time because we had Hinoki. They’d taught me about the nature of their power, and the crucial job of peeling Shadow away from inside Risa’s body was something only Hinoki could have done. I was the one who should be thanking them.
Asari, seeing Mitsuki begin her healing, directed a question at me.
”Minoru-san, what kind of entity is inside Risa-san?” she asked.
”It’s like Hinoki’s daughter. An incredible entity that’s protected Hinoki’s power for over a thousand years,” I replied.
”Hinoki-chan’s… I see…” she said thoughtfully.
Asari’s gaze shifted to Hinoki, standing beside me.
”Then… will Minoru-san subjugate it someday… or has that already happened?” she pressed.
”Not yet,” I said.
Hinoki cut in.
’Bro, I need to talk to you about something…’ they began.
”What?” I asked.
’It’s about Asunaro. Her wounds are gonna take a long time to heal, I think,’ they explained.
”Is that so?” I replied.
’Big sis’s healing magic should help some, but she’ll need to regain her own power to fully recover. That’s not something that’ll happen right away. Right now, if she gets ripped out of sis’s body, she’d probably just fade away. So… could she stay inside sis and recover for a while?’ they asked.
”Will that have any negative effect on Risa?” I inquired.
’Strangely enough, I don’t think so. Actually, I noticed something when I was inside sis. Remember what I mentioned earlier? About sis’s body being special,’ they said.
”You mean how she can hold Hinoki’s power without side effects?” I clarified.
’Exactly. I was seriously surprised. It’s like her body was made to nullify the negative effects of my power. And here’s the shocking part… there’s a chance that was intentional. That she was created that way,’ they revealed.
”Bred to have that trait?” I asked.
’Not bred—this goes way deeper. All the way to birth. Generations and generations of bloodline mixing, all building toward this… and sis is the culmination,’ they said.
If Hinoki’s theory was right, then Risa’s mother’s family—the Yukizuki clan—had spent centuries modifying their bloodlines.
’Humanity’s handiwork. I’m almost impressed,’ Hinoki remarked.
A staggering plan—the Yukizuki clan wanted divine power, so they left Shadow as the executor, while preparing a body that could withstand that power across multiple generations.
And after all that, the plan finally succeeded—only for the single crack I’d made by educating Risa to bring the whole thing crashing down. For those who’d spent generations on their malice, it must have been a nightmare.
”So to summarize: there’s no effect on Risa’s body, so it’s fine. Understood. I give permission. But ultimately, it’s up to Risa herself,” I concluded.
’That’s…’ Hinoki started.
”It’s fine. No problem,” Risa said, opening her eyes.
”Risa! Are you okay?” I asked urgently.
”Hm… my body aches a little… but thanks to Mitsuki, I’ll be fine. Thank you…” she replied, slowly sitting up.
”I already worked things out with Asunaro and Hinoki. …The three of us worked together inside my body to expel Shadow, so we’re already friends. A little cohabitation won’t be an issue,” Risa declared.
’Thanks, sis,’ Hinoki said warmly.
”You’re welcome. And Asunaro’s agreed too,” Risa added.
”Hm?” I murmured.
Something felt off about this exchange.
”Risa… can you actually understand what Hinoki’s saying?” I asked.
”I can now… probably Asunaro’s influence,” she replied.
’Most likely,’ Hinoki confirmed.
”Wait, so this is how Hinoki talks? That suspicious-sounding tone? I thought an ancient entity would be way more dignified—this is totally killing my image,” Risa said, clearly amused.
’Sis, that hurts…’ Hinoki whined.
Hinoki’s pathetic cry was… honestly, hard to associate with a great ancient entity.
”Minoru~. You finished~?” Chifumi called out.
Chifumi and Yurina approached, dragging the mother along. The mother’s face was utterly lifeless, her collar being pulled as she stumbled forward.
Chifumi shoved the mother in front of Risa. The mother kept her eyes fixed on the ground. Risa asked, her expression cold.
”Are you my mother? Or are you Shadow?” she demanded.
”…’s…” the mother muttered.
”What? Speak up so I can hear you,” Risa pressed.
”I don’t care what happens to me anymore…” the mother said, lifting her face—it was like a doll’s.
”Come!” the mother suddenly shouted.
As if responding to that voice, the Snow flies waiting in the sky above surged toward her.
The Snow flies that had filled the sky not long ago were now visibly reduced in number. Some had been torn apart by my Shock Magic, others frozen solid by Chifumi’s area attacks. Having lost half their kin, they remained loyal to their master. Impressive.
”Ugh, this is annoying~” Chifumi groaned.
”Chifumi, let her go,” I ordered.
”Okay~” she replied.
The Snow flies tried to attack Chifumi, who was restraining the mother. Asari’s Crystal Wall blocked them in the nick of time—their attacks couldn’t reach us. But the mother, suddenly thrashing, resisted against Chifumi’s restraints. No need to force it—I gave the order to release her. Let’s see what kind of final fireworks she has in store.
The Snow flies clinging to the mother’s body, now separated from us, began to glow and merged into a single entity.
The writhing white mass twisted and transformed—into a four-legged beast over seven meters long and five meters tall, covered in coarse white fur. Its torso was impossibly thin, no thicker than its legs. The proportions were all wrong—its forelimbs were massively longer and thicker than its hind legs. Three twisted tails, each as large as its arms. Where its face should have been was just a mass of white fluff shaped vaguely like a head, with no eyes or ears but the suggestion of their forms. Was that a wolf?
A three-tailed white werewolf, formed from the gathered Snow flies. This must have been the mother’s Shadow’s ultimate trump card.
The others spread out around me. Risa stood at my side, leaning on Mitsuki’s shoulder, staring at the transformed werewolf.
”ZYAAAAAaaaaAAAA!!!!” the beast howled.
The werewolf moved, scraping against the forest trees like dry wood.
It charged at me, swinging its fist.
”I’ll protect you!” Asari shouted.
Asari’s Silicic Armor manifested Crystal Walls, blocking the blow. The first strike cracked it; the second shattered it. As the crystal fragments fell, I could see one of the werewolf’s tails was shorter than before.
It had shattered Asari’s wall with raw physical force. Despite the accumulated damage from my punishment on the mother’s body. There was no way that destructive power came from normal Mana conversion alone.
It was trading Snow flies’ lives for that technique.
I understood—and was disappointed.
If she was going to say “I don’t care what happens anymore,” I’d expected a self-destruct attack. Instead, she was forcing sacrifice on the Snow flies. It was a suicide technique, sure—but not one that risked herself. This confirmed it. The Shadow’s traits: never giving up to the very end. She was definitely possessed.
You were a leader of your own group once, weren’t you? Clean up your own mess!
I moved past Asari, who was raising her gauntlet to reconstruct Crystal Walls in front of me.
The werewolf’s next attack came from the same stance—but this time, it manifested claws and thrust with a piercing strike. The claws glowed, likely enhanced with magic.
I met its third attack with my right fist.
A direct clash.
The maximum-force shockwave from my fist canceled out the werewolf’s claws by deflecting them. Neither of us had magic enhancement. My fist against a werewolf’s fist, at least ten times my mass. The difference in kinetic energy alone should have overpowered me.
You thought I’d lose, didn’t you!?
I immediately re-fired Shock Magic. Forcing a second cast without the normal interval reduced its power, but it was still more than enough to destroy the werewolf.
”Raaahhh!!!” I roared.
”ZYAAAA!!!!” the beast screamed.
The werewolf’s upper body and right half shattered from my right fist outward. The mother, embedded near the werewolf’s waist, was blasted away by the shockwave’s aftermath.
”Ugh!” she cried out.
Snow flies swarmed the mother, now lying on the ground and unable to move. All of them were my Snow flies now. Among the glowing swarm, a tiny centipede burrowed into her body.
”!!…!!” she convulsed silently.
The mother convulsed, just like Risa before. A few seconds later, Hinoki emerged with Shadow in their grasp—noticeably smaller than the one that had been inside Risa.
”Be gone,” I commanded.
Snow flies clung to it, it glowed, and Shadow vanished.
”………”
It was over. The mother sat in a daze. I directed hostile Mana at her, but there was no response. I was considering leaving her incapacitated and returning to the original World Line when the mother… faded away. At the same time, the scenery around us shifted—from the open mountaintop to the inside of a cave.
We’d apparently escaped the space created by the insect cage.
Turning around, I saw Risa breaking the Warifu—the hourglass. She’d just broken the Warifu Chifumi had handed her, surely sending her mother back to the original World Line.
”I’m sorry. …She’s still my mother, even if she’s like that. Besides… Minoru, I don’t want you to do pointless killing…” Risa said softly.
Risa’s frightened expression cooled my head.
Huff. I took a deep breath and steadied myself.
”…Sorry. I wasn’t thinking straight.”
Once I’d calmed down a little, I decided on my next move. We’d wait at the dungeon exit to make sure her mother couldn’t escape.
”Escape now—quickly. Everyone has their Return slip, right?”
”Got it!”
”I’m good!”
I confirmed everyone had pulled out their slips.
”Let’s move!”
We escaped the dungeon.
—
Inside the Dungeon Management Building’s recall chamber, there was no one besides our group. Her mother should have returned too—had she already fled in under ten seconds?
While we were at it, selling the drop items, I asked the receptionist about anyone who’d come out before us. Turns out Risa’s mother hadn’t surfaced. She should have returned to her World Line unharmed. Normally, you’d retreat immediately. But if she hadn’t come out—there had to be a reason. If it was just her avoiding a run-in with us, I wasn’t about to let her slip away.
As we kept an eye on everyone emerging from the dungeon, Shoji’s group returned.
”Good work,” I said.
”Likewise. You’re back early,” Shoji replied.
”Got caught up in some trouble, so we called it a day.”
”You look tense for a group that called it early.”
”Well, we got jumped out of nowhere…”
”Wait—ambushed by a weird? What happened?”
My explanation was missing too many pieces. Shoji wasn’t following.
I explained everything that happened inside the dungeon. Shoji had a stake in this too.
”She used Warifu1 illegally to intrude—tried to sacrifice Risa-san to claim Divine power for herself? That for real?” Shoji asked, his voice tight.
”For real. Ask anyone in our group.”
”No, I believe you. …Still, that’s hard to swallow. We warned the former administrator just hours before entering, and then this happens.”
Off to the side, Chifumi and Risa were filling in the female members of Shoji’s group.
”The only direct victim inside the dungeon was Risa,” Chifumi explained. “You could frame this as a domestic squabble within the Naruse Family Estate. But the magical tool she used—that’s the one we mentioned earlier, the one reported stolen. That already ties her family to this.”
”Right,” one of the girls murmured.
”And we need to verify Warifu too. No way it was issued through proper channels. If she bribed the dungeon administrator to get it—and that comes out—it’s a major scandal.”
”This is giving me a headache,” Shoji muttered.
”One more thing…”
”There’s more?”
”Her reason for not coming out—if it’s just avoiding us, fine. But if she’s in trouble inside the dungeon, that’s a problem.”
”Like maybe her accomplices got silenced inside? Killed to keep them quiet?”
”I checked the entry logs. No other sorcerers entered yesterday or today besides us and her.”
”Then we’re clear. Just have to wait.”
An hour and a half passed.
Finally, Komoda’s group emerged in front of our waiting formation.
They pulled back at the sight of us, tense and ready.
”What’s going on? Something happen?” Komoda asked, eyeing us warily.
”Actually…”
The short version. I explained as much as I could. Komoda understood the situation.
”So she’s still not out. What’s your plan? If she holed up, this gets tricky.”
”Not much else we can do. We’ll wait her out.”
Tomorrow was a day off. I’d stick it out until midnight if I had to. She’d have to come out when she got hungry.
”Anyway, how’d it go for you, Komoda? Take down the boss?”
”Took it down. Purified a giant scaled earthworm boss. Surface layer’s cleared.”
”Congrats,” I said, meaning it.
To have fully conquered the Sword-Hammer Cave’s surface layer in the third semester dungeon—that was something. Komoda’s chances of topping the first-year rankings were looking real. A counter-attack on the top student who’d been previously dethroned? Unheard of.
Komoda’s family had come to pick him up by bus. He said he didn’t need to stick around—but if we were preparing for the unexpected, extra hands couldn’t hurt. So he stayed.
During the wait, Risa called Naruse-papa, Naruse-mama, and Anri-san to explain today’s events. Anri-san decided to come over immediately.
We filled in Aunt Onigahara, who’d come to pick her up, and she stayed too. Looking at it now, this was affecting a lot of people. She’d caused an incredible amount of trouble.
After Komoda came out, another four hours passed.
Just as everyone’s irritation was reaching its peak—her mother emerged from the dungeon.
She’d likely anticipated our group lying in wait. But seeing not one, not two, but three groups—including Anri-san, who’d flown in—she seemed to abandon resistance. Quietly, she submitted.
I thanked Komoda’s group and they dispersed.
Our group, along with Shoji’s, followed behind, escorted by Anri-san, as we accompanied her mother back to the Naruse Family Estate. The discussion about her fate—that was finally beginning.
By the time we arrived at the Naruse Family Estate, the date had already changed.

Summary:
The battle concludes with the defeat of the Shadow-possessed mother, who transforms into a three-tailed werewolf before being shattered by Minoru’s Shock Magic. Hinoki extracts the smaller Shadow entity from the mother’s body, and Risa breaks the Warifu to send her mother back to their original World Line. The chapter ends with Risa apologizing and expressing her wish that Minoru avoid pointless killing, revealing her continued compassion for her mother despite everything.
The narrator’s group escapes the dungeon and immediately begins a stakeout for Risa’s mother at the exit, discovering she hasn’t emerged. Shoji’s group returns and learns about the incident involving Warifu and the attempted sacrifice. After hours of waiting and Komoda’s group joining them, Risa’s mother finally emerges and surrenders upon seeing the assembled coalition.
