Volume 4 Chapter 78 Return to the Ship
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The trading city of Takere. I was walking from the inn to the station to pass through the Transfer Gate that connects to it.
I’d agreed yesterday to go to Oceanus on the Izumo, but honestly, I was still having second thoughts.
Then, an elderly Amazoness fell into step beside me.
”Fifteen cases o’ Ring-Five an’ twenty-two handmaidens, that’s the cargo, that is.”
This Amazoness was Mahaka, a shipping merchant. She spoke in a heavy Schweilitz accent, telling me about the goods.
She looked older than Queen Kakuka of Nyunpai, but she sure talked a lot.
For the record, “Ring-Five” referred to saltwater bottles containing ring-shaped mana pentamers. Each bottle held about a hundred and eighty milliliters.
”Stormy weather, we had none. But three dhows from Barracuda’s outfit that left seven days back—gone. Two junks from Sugi’s lot that set out ten days ago—vanished an’ all. All that floated back was driftwood.”
She was talking about the trading ships that had gone missing on the route from Takere to Oceanus, the Amazoness heartland.
That was… unsettling.
”It’s the season when the whales head south, that it is. But even if they collided with a whale, there’s no way a whole fleet would sink, not possible.”
This old Amazoness’s stories kept getting darker.
”Is there no other possible cause?”
”There’s talk that a Daqin Seed Ship fleet was spotted near the eastern atoll of the Coral Sea.”
Local fishermen claim they saw ships as big as mountains. But apparently, nobody else saw them. Still, this season sometimes brings mirages—and no one in these waters has actually laid eyes on a Daqin Seed Ship.
”Wouldn’t be wise to dismiss it as a mistake just yet, I reckon.”
She muttered that last part like she was talking to herself.
We entered the station and lined up for inspection in front of the Transfer Gate to Takere.
”Mahaka-san. Your Schweilitz is quite fluent, isn’t it?”
I asked the elderly Amazoness, who spoke clear—if accented—Schweilitz.
”From forty years back ’til twenty, I fought as a mercenary in what they call the Western Front and the Nitrol region.”
She’d mostly been employed by the Empire of Charle, apparently. She might have even crossed paths with Bours-san or Major Sonya.
”You wouldn’t know a mercenary named Geklan, would you? Ugly mug he had, ugly enough to scare off prostitutes. But a promising young man, so I took his virginity. If he’s still alive, he’d be a fine commander by now.”
Geklan—could that be the enemy commander I ordered Rosa to kill during the Fifty-Third Defense Battle? I needed to change the subject—I didn’t want the Amazoness to hate me.
”Well then, Mahaka-san, are you from Nyunpai? The Amazoness kingdom on the Southern Continent?”
”That’s right. After I finished with the mercenary life, I worked the shipping route between Lamu—that’s Nyunpai’s royal capital—and Oceanus. Then I settled down here to raise my children.”
Now she was entrusted with a shop in Takere, a trading city in the country of the Androgynos Group, under a trading company funded by the royal family.
I’d better stay on her good side.
But wait—children, at that age?
As I stared in surprise, she shot me a glare.
Actually, Amazoness ovulation lasted until their sixties.
Right, nothing to worry about there.
When our turn came at the reception, Rocani-san handled all the paperwork, and we passed safely through the Transfer Gate.
The temperature was slightly higher on the other side, and the faint scent of salt hung in the air.
Exiting the station, we stood on a hill near the harbor. Below us, ships of all sizes lined the docks; the morning market was in full swing, bustling with people loading cargo onto trading vessels.
”The Izumo isn’t here,” Pamela said.
As she’d pointed out, with its black hull, it should have stood out among these ships. But it was nowhere to be seen.
”Your ship’s at the western port,” Rocani-san directed us to a terror-bird-drawn carriage parked in front of the station.
We boarded two at a time and rode to that western port.
When the carriage stopped and we stepped out, the scenery had completely flipped from the prosperous harbor we’d just left. This was a rundown fishing village.
And the water must have been shallow because the Izumo, which I hadn’t seen in a while, was anchored offshore.
”This way,” Mahaka-san called me over.
As I gazed at the familiar Izumo, we went to a roofed shack near the floating pier and sat down.
”Already told the acting captain’s deputy, Squad Leader Fredys, the broad strokes, I have.”
Inside the shack was a Polynesian-looking man. After receiving instructions from the elderly Amazoness, he headed toward the Izumo in an outrigger canoe from the floating pier.
”How much have you told them?” I asked.
When I asked, she said she’d informed them that Pamela and I were returning to the ship, and that we’d agreed to transport the cargo to Oceanus.
But she hadn’t told them what the cargo was, or that we’d need to come back here to summon Henrietta.
Right, that made sense.
I’d have to explain that part myself.
Thankfully, Rocani-san had told them that I’d used the Transfer Gate to go to Schweilitz and bring back Karl and the others. He’d also suggested letting Maria and Rafaela-san return to their home country, since they’d recently given birth.
I had my doubts about whether a newborn could survive months of voyaging.
And Kenze, too—but she’d insist on coming with me. No question.
”Do you have a chart for the route to Oceanus?” I asked Mahaka-san.
”None at all. So I’ve arranged a guide who knows those waters inside out. Already on board, she is.”
Apparently, the guide was an Amazoness who’d been an acting captain on a trading vessel but lost her job due to the Syphilis Calamity.
I had a bad feeling about this.
”She couldn’t speak Schweilitz, so I taught her some, but she only knows a few words at best.”
That bad feeling just got worse.
I looked toward the Izumo and saw a boat being lowered before the canoe we’d sent even reached the ship. It was heading our way.
”One more thing—why is this port so deserted?” I asked, a little curious.
”One reason’s the shallow water. Another’s that the waters just outside this bay lie on a whale migration route—lots of accidents, there’ve been. Sharks, too.”
Certainly, a ship made of iron like the Izumo might be fine, but a wooden ship colliding with a whale wouldn’t fare well. And with sharks on top of that, surviving would be a struggle.
”Trade ships won’t come here for that reason. And the water’s too shallow for fish—shrimp and clams are all you get, so not many fishing boats either.”
I see.
Maybe once we hit the open ocean, there’d be plenty of unsuspecting fish, and the fishing enthusiast Pole would be thrilled.
As we were talking, the boat drew closer.
On board were Katarina and Squad Leader Fredys. And among the oarsmen—Pole.
Before Mahaka-san could stand, Pamela and I rose, waving to our old comrades as we headed for the floating pier.
As the boat approached the dock, two figures in officer uniforms stood up on the unsteady craft.
”Acting Captain—welcome back,” Katarina said.
Katarina didn’t call me “you.” She said “Acting Captain”—and then, sobbing, tears began streaming down her face.
Beside her, Squad Leader Fredys saluted with a smile.
”Yeah. I’m back,” I answered.
By the time I answered, the boat had docked. The two of them stepped onto the floating pier. I straightened up, returned the salute, and received a formal report from Fredys on the departure of Maria and Rafaela, who’d left the ship with their children.
”Otherwise, no issues among the crew. However…” Fredys continued.
She also reported that Kenze had fallen ill and lost her breast milk, and that Maria and Rafaela had nursed her child for about a week as a substitute.
She was apparently recovering well now.
We took Rocani-san and Mahaka-san on the boat and headed back to the Izumo.
I sat down and wordlessly high-fived Pole.
Halfway there, Katarina couldn’t hold back anymore and clung to me.
”Just as I thought—that one’s got no control over his lower half,” a voice from behind muttered.
”There are outsiders here, you know.” I patted her head and made her sit properly.
As we neared the Izumo, many crew members emerged from their cabins to greet us.
As I boarded, I received a chorus of “Welcome back.”
Was I really this beloved?
It felt pretty great.
We moved to the dining hall to discuss what came next.
A space meant for about twenty people was now packed with forty. Among them—a slightly thinner Kenze, and a noticeably plumper Kai. I gave them a small wave.
And then came the hardest topic: delivering the cargo requested by Oceanus.
I explained, as a personal matter, that summoning Henrietta-san would take some time.
It was basically asking them to alter the ship’s schedule for private reasons—but no one raised any objections.
”How long would it take to get to Oceanus?” Squad Leader Fredys asked.
Mahaka-san raised her hand and stood up. “Three weeks in a normal sailing ship,” she said.
Wait, what?
If it took that long, the handmaidens at Cisco’s place would already have emerged before I could summon Henrietta-san.
I shot Rocani-san a glare, but he pretended not to notice.
”So that’s six weeks round trip under sail. At that distance, we could use the engine,” Fredys added.
”If we steam, about five weeks. Four if nothing goes wrong. Even if we burn all the coal, we can reload when we get back,” the Dwarf bridge squad leader chimed in.
That was reassuring.
But even twenty days—Roland’s estimate—would put me past the emergence date.
”That’s fifteen cases of Ring-Five and twenty-two handmaidens, correct? And the payment?” Section Chief Gida asked.
Rocani-san raised his hand. “We cannot pay. The Syphilis Calamity has just passed, and we have no money,” he admitted.
Section Chief Gida made a sour face.
I understood their lack of funds, but working for free was tough.
”However, we will compensate the Kingdom of Schweilitz. Absolutely,” Rocani-san insisted.
Hold on.
Pay us, not the country, I thought.
I could almost hear the silent protests from my subordinates.
”I’m sorry, but I have one more request,” Rocani-san added.
The gazes around me began to shift—maybe I was being too easygoing?
No, I hadn’t agreed to delayed payment or extra requests.
”Please transport a Transfer Gate to Oceanus.”
A Transfer Gate?
According to Rocani-san, a Transfer Gate was a pair. By connecting two gates across space, you could teleport instantly. But you had to create them together—and move one of them to the destination.
”It doesn’t take up much space. I beg you.”
After giving a speech about how this was necessary for close future cooperation with the Amazoness, our allied nation, the elder of this country bowed his head.
At first, the crew seemed resigned—but when they heard the size was about wide enough for a carriage, the complaints erupted.
”What do you mean, ‘doesn’t take much space’?” the deck crew, led by Pole, started grumbling—probably because it would cover the foredeck and get in the way of their work.
”Larry-kun, please do something,” Rocani-san whispered to me.
”Why didn’t you tell them from the start?” I told him he should’ve said it right away, when the mood was good. And that saying it “didn’t take much space” was what caused the problem.
”Are you sure? Without that Transfer Gate, you won’t make it in time for the emergence at Cisco’s,” Rocani-san replied.
That bastard—he’d planned it.
If he’d just asked to transport the gate from the beginning, it wouldn’t have been an issue.
Rocani-san wasn’t the only one I was angry at. Mahaka-san beside me was red in the face.
If a large Transfer Gate connected Oceanus and the Land of the Fire Ring—which was the Androgynos Group’s nation—the shipping company she worked for, which ran the trade route between them, would lose almost all its business. And there were probably other trading companies on the Takere–Oceanus run too.
Maybe he’d wanted to prevent her from leaking information to other companies.
If so, then she had my pity—being distrusted like that.
But Mahaka-san didn’t raise her voice. Her company was backed by Amazoness royal investment, so naturally, if a Transfer Gate was to be placed in Oceanus, the royal family’s consent would have already been secured.
Which meant the whole “fifteen cases of Ring-Five and twenty-two handmaidens” thing was just a smokescreen.
Even the Fourth Sage would be impressed by that level of cunning.
The crew didn’t know that much—but the mood had soured compared to earlier.
Still, I couldn’t say no.
”Fine. For the sake of both nations, we’ll load the Transfer Gate,” I said, held hostage by the Henrietta-summoning deadline.
And then—disaster struck.
”Larry! Larry! Larry!”
Shouting my name, someone pushed through the crowd and appeared before me—a black-haired Amazoness in a ponytail.
The woman Mahaka-san had mentioned—the acting captain who lost her job in the Syphilis Calamity—was now our guide, intimately familiar with the sea route to Oceanus.
If I hadn’t been lured into Irrumatio by her, I’d never have had to worry about syphilis infection.
Her name—Kamea Tsū.
”Larry… mouth… love,” she said.
For most people, that string of words wouldn’t make any sense.
But if you knew my tastes—you’d understand instantly.
Sergeant Bebel was visibly holding back laughter.
Kamea threw herself at me, disregarding all eyes, and started kissing my face everywhere.
This was bad. Very bad.
Katarina’s face had turned bright red.
”Larry… love… s*x… mouth,” Kamea added.
With those next words, everyone gathered understood everything.
The gazes on me turned ice cold.
And then—
”Pamela! What were you doing? You knew perfectly well that this one has no self-control below the belt!” Katarina scolded Pamela, calling me “this one.”
Kenze approached and peeled Kamea off me.
”Come with me,” Kenze grabbed Kamea’s ponytail and dragged her off into the crowd.
”You knew better than anyone how weak he is with women. What were you doing?” Katarina continued.
”Pamela, you don’t need to rotate the schedule anymore, right?” Kenze added.
”Why didn’t you keep a handle on things? Larry’s got that kind of problem,” someone muttered.
Pamela, who’d been having fun with Rao-san back when I first got involved with Kamea, had no defense.
She was getting the brunt of the blame—but the looks directed at me were equally cold.
Hmm.
This was a problem.

Summary:
The protagonist returns to the Izumo with Pamela and Mahaka, reuniting with the crew and learning of recent hardships. While discussing the cargo transport to Oceanus, Rocani-san reveals a hidden agenda involving a Transfer Gate, forcing Larry to agree under duress of missing Henrietta’s summoning deadline. The tense atmosphere collapses when Kamea, the disgraced guide, publicly declares her attraction to Larry, triggering a chaotic confrontation that leaves him socially cornered and the crew’s trust in his judgment severely strained.

Pragmatic and outwardly insolent yet polite, she handles logistics—from transferring rescued women and seeking shore supplies to negotiating coal with Rao. Known for using skincare sesame oil, she clashes with Daran and initially resisted hiring Raphael.
• Larry – Larry is a dark-haired, weary 16-year-old reincarnated Second Lieutenant, cynical Acting Captain of the Izumo, and Associate Professor.
