Volume 4 Chapter 82 The Regent

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

When I told the Amazoness official in charge of me, Official name Ms. Leakle, about the whale-eater, her expression changed and she sprang into action. When I mentioned that Kamea, an Amazoness, had also seen it, she issued instructions for Kamea to go somewhere as well.

”Was it that serious a matter?”

I might have asked a foolish question.

”That giant shark has learned to attack people,” Ms. Leakle said, her tone sharpening.

I recalled shark movies from my previous life, but questions remained.

”For a creature that large to maintain its body, I can understand attacking large whales, but would it be satisfied just picking off humans one by one?”

The whale-eater was over twenty meters long, and when it opened its mouth, it could swallow a cow or a horse whole. And it wasn’t just one — they traveled in packs.

The Seed ships carried many people, so they might have been satisfied, but a normal trading ship would have a crew of maybe ten at most. For them, that wouldn’t even count as a snack.

”We are a people who have ruled these waters for over two thousand years. We know their ecology well.”

Ms. Leakle said she was busy and would discuss this later, yet she stopped and looked at me.

”They have high learning ability. They look like sharks, though,” she said, leaving only those words behind before hurrying back to the Viscount’s Palace.

”What’s going to happen, I wonder?”

Squad Leader Fredys, standing beside me, asked, but all I could reply was, “Who knows.”

Left on the pier were the two of us and two young officials from the Viscount’s Palace. The women wore loose cotton trousers dyed with plant colors, linen shirts, and had their hair pinned up with decorative stick-like implements. In their hands, they held what looked like paper books bound with thread.

”What are you going to do from here?”

I tried calling out to the two of them, but they were only startled, and it seemed they couldn’t understand my words at all.

”This port must be exclusively for the royal palace, huh.”

I nodded at Squad Leader Fredys’s words.

This port was enclosed along with the Viscount’s Palace by a wall about five meters high, and both the ground and the palace were covered in white limestone tiles.

Normally, a port with ships at anchor would have a lot of foot traffic. But here, despite having three piers, a gorgeously decorated sailing ship that appeared to belong to royalty, and two military ships resembling Celt longboats, there wasn’t even a Town Guard in sight.

Looking closely, the luxurious ship’s hull below the waterline was thickly covered in barnacles. It probably hadn’t been moved in years, nor received regular maintenance.

The military ships didn’t have that look, but there were no Town Guards watching over them either.

They were either very confident or very foolish.

While we waited, Ms. Leakle arrived with about twenty Amazonesses in bikini armor.

Most were Polynesian-looking, but there were also yellow-skinned, brown-skinned, and white-skinned ones among them. Every one of them had magnificent bosoms that swayed as they walked. On top of that, they were all young.

”Incredible. What a sight for sore eyes, what a sight.”

As I marveled and delighted in the sight of these half-naked women—

”You’ve been through nothing but trouble with women, and yet you never learn, do you, acting captain.”

Squad Leader Fredys said that to me.

”Well now, that and this are different things. Among the male crew, only Squad Leader Roland wouldn’t appreciate this spectacular view.”

For the record, Squad Leader Roland was into men.

”Well, admiring is fine, but please don’t bring new women aboard and disrupt the ship’s discipline again.”

What a terrible thing to say.

Besides, if she meant discipline in terms of relations between men and women, then Squad Leader Fredys, you yourself—

 ”Acting Captain Larry.”

Ms. Leakle returned and called me by my title.

”We will take in all the women who were aboard the Seed ships here in Oceanus. What shall the price be?”

It was decided that the women rescued from the Seed ships would be sold as slaves.

Before I could give instructions to Squad Leader Fredys, she was already shouting toward the ship to call Section Chief Gida.

”The section chief in charge will come. Please discuss it with her.”

”Understood. Then bring them down from the ship one by one. Our soldiers will receive them.”

By soldiers, she probably meant the bikini-armored warriors.

The deck crew guys in charge of the women’s disembarkation were lucky.

However, only the young ones had been kept in the cabins. Most of the women aboard had been on the open deck during the day, exposed to tropical sunlight. Their sunburned faces were dark red and grimy. They had scooped seawater over themselves to lower their body temperature, but no rain came to wash it off, so they smelled quite badly.

As the deck crew walked the women one by one along the planks from the ship’s hull down to the pier, the waiting Amazonesses gathered them in groups of ten.

About halfway through the unloading, a group centered on men entered the area. Among them was a Dwarf, and some who looked like they belonged to the Androgynos Group.

”They will relocate the Transfer Gate.”

Then, over by the “Izumo,” some commotion arose. Looking over, it seemed a man had been mixed in among the women. He was dragged before us.

He had apparently been hiding his identity under a cloth. His rank was, as expected, that of a military strategist, and he clutched a feather fan as if it were his most precious possession, though it had gotten wet and the feathers were clumped together.

On the super-large Junk ship we’d encountered off the Southern Continent before, he had been at the bow commanding the fleet — so had this one been hiding at the rear?

”What should we do? We could subject him to a mana interrogation, but we don’t have time.”

”We’ll handle that here. He may have information about other Seed ship fleets as well.”

Since she put it that way, I withdrew.

It took about two more hours, and we were able to hand over the contracted cargo — the demi-humans and Ring Five.

While Section Chief Gida was verifying the delivery slips, Elder Rocani and the elderly Amazoness Mahaka-san emerged from the dome at the edge of the Viscount’s Palace where the Transfer Gate had been transported.

 ”Good work.”

Elder Rocani said, offering a handshake. I was a bit reluctant, but treating it as a social courtesy, I responded. Then, the doors of the Viscount’s Palace opened, and someone who appeared to carry an air of dignity stepped out.

Her base attire was bikini armor. At her waist, a sheath held a curved blade reminiscent of a Japanese katana. Her upper body was covered by a leather vest that was open at the front, and she wore a blue, see-through pareo that reached her ankles. She wore lavish jewelry, and a blue gemstone dangled on her forehead.

Despite being a woman, her core was completely unwavering. Was she Oceanus royalty? She had overwhelming dignity.

Queen Kakuka of Nyunpai had been quite frank and easygoing, but this person was different. What should I do?

The Amazoness, accompanied by two attendants, approached me, dropped to one knee, and bowed her head. Seeing this, every Amazoness present followed her example, turned toward me, and knelt on one knee.

 What?

 ”※●※▽–〇・・・・・”

She was bowing her head and saying something.

”This is Lady Kanve Saba, the Regent of the Dragon God’s nation,” Ms. Leakle translated for me.

Regent? Was the Queen still young?

 ”*゜/〰✕, *=●・・・・”

This time, she was apparently delivering a standard greeting, something like thanking me for coming from so far away.

”Um, could you ask her to raise her head? I’m not someone who should have a regent of a nation kneeling before me.”

I asked Ms. Leakle to convey this. Then, Lady Kanve slowly stood up. She was about my height, but the muscles on her arms and legs were clearly defined.

She had such a martial, intimidating presence that I almost wondered if she was a bodyguard rather than a regent.

I learned later that this person apparently had a large dragon tattoo on her back.

After standing, Kanve-san said she was Queen Kakuka’s niece. Which would make her a cousin of Nikaure-princess, who was being held as a hostage in Schweilitz, and of Ade-princess, the mother of Riera, with whom I had been intimate.

”She says: then tonight, dine with the female King and stay overnight.”

Ms. Leakle translated and conveyed this, but no — I hadn’t heard anything about that.

I needed to return to the Land of the Fire Ring with the Androgynos Group in order to summon Henrietta-san.

But I couldn’t seem to say that to this imposing Kanve-san.

I turned to look at Rocani-san, and he quietly told me that tomorrow would be fine as well.

Thinking, *is that really okay?*, I agreed to stay the night.

”Also, I’d like to request food and water for the ‘Izumo.’”

When I spoke to Ms. Leakle, she translated for Kanve-san.

 ”How much do you need?”

Such a good question came back immediately.

Since I didn’t know the local units for water and food, I replied that we needed enough for about fifty crew members for one month.

”The Regent says it will be ready by tomorrow morning.”

I worried whether it was really okay to receive that much, but the overwhelmingly intimidating regent looked at me and gave a firm nod.

 ”Thank you very much.”

When I bowed, she gestured that there was no need for that.

She was tough-looking, but apparently a good person.

On top of that, she had several roofed sleeping quarters prepared at the pier where the “Izumo” was anchored, and meals would be provided as well.

I felt almost guilty at such lavish hospitality.

After that, with Rocani-san and Mahaka-san serving as interpreters, I attended a strategy meeting regarding the whale-eaters.

The waters where the Seed ship fleet had been attacked were along the route of southward-migrating whales, and packs of whale-eaters came through every few years, they said.

Normally, they came to hunt the southward-migrating baleen whales.

However, there were a few records of them attacking ships with people aboard. Aside from this latest incident where they had directly eaten people, they would target trading ships, knock people into the sea, and consume half of them. Then, the blood would spread, and great white sharks and tiger sharks — smaller than the whale-eaters but still over five meters — would gather. The whale-eaters would then surround these sharks in packs and hunt them.

”They really are intelligent, aren’t they.”

As I expressed admiration, I was told there were also reports suggesting they seemed to communicate with each other underwater.

They had indeed learned how to destroy large Junk ships. Their high intelligence was undeniable.

Navigation by trading ships in those waters was now prohibited.

Ms. Leakle had taken Kamea earlier probably to question her in detail and issue the navigation ban as quickly as possible.

 But—

”Is that all? Won’t you subjugate or hunt them?”

In response, I was told they used to do so. It took dozens of casualties to bring down a single whale-eater.

Nowadays, they had no choice but to simply endure until the creatures disappeared.

 ”How long do you endure?”

When the baleen whale migration ended, toothed whales would arrive next. Among those toothed whales, there were some that ate whale-eaters.

They were called Ryōha-kujira (Leviathan) and, from what I heard, resembled sperm whales. They thrashed violently if provoked, but their main diet was giant squid, so they didn’t eat people. As long as you did nothing, they were docile.

When whale-eaters saw a Ryōha-kujira (Leviathan), they would vanish as if they’d never been there. The Leviathans also migrated in pods, and in the past, if there were reports of a Ryōha-kujira (Leviathan) sighting, the navigation ban on trading ships would be lifted.

”However, the problem this time is that a whale-eater rammed your ship, and after that, it hasn’t done anything further. Also, when the sound of the large Junk ship sinking reached the super-large Junk ship some distance away, the whale-eaters disappeared from there as well.”

Given the direction of this conversation—

”Would you be willing to part with your black ship?”

There it was. That was where this was heading.

”Selling the black ship requires the King’s permission. We can’t give an answer on our own judgment.”

When the Regent heard the translation of my words, she gave a large nod.

”And so, there is something we are currently struggling with.”

I waited for Ms. Leakle to translate, then opened my mouth.

”I’ve heard that heading west right now is difficult due to war. Heading east requires passing through the rough seas south of the South American continent. If possible, would you allow us to pass through the Nicaragua Canal that you dug?”

Hearing the translation of my words, a vein appeared on the Regent’s forehead.

 Was it a no?

”If you allow us passage, we could return to our country quickly, and I could advise His Majesty the King of Schweilitz that the Dragon God’s nation desires the black ship.”

When the Regent finished hearing the translation of my words, she opened her previously closed eyes wide, looked at me, and said something.

”She says there is a condition for using the canal.”

 What is it?

I mean — what might it be?

 —

Notes:

• Leakle – Amazoness official assigned to the Acting Captain. Displays formal, respectful speech. Becomes visibly alarmed when informed about the Hole-Eaters and quickly mobilizes to take action. Serves as the primary intermediary between the Acting Captain’s crew and the Oceanus authorities. Amazoness official at the Viscount’s Palace in Oceanus. Speaks Schweilitz language. Assigned to handle Larry-san’s affairs. Reacts with visible concern to Whale Eater accounts.

• Kamea – Amazoness sailor and Larry’s physical partner. Brought rice to the trading city. Unrelated to the syphilis outbreak’s origin.

• Viscount – A noble of the Rus who insisted on bringing reinforcements to the defense of the city.

• Fredys – Izumo’s deck crew foreman and squad leader is a battle-hardened former slave with a formal, pragmatic bearing. Related to the Ullmans via Uncle Torge and living with Roland, she serves as the Acting Captain’s voice of reason, calling out his behavior while remaining loyal. Refusing command while Larry lives, her sharp judgment makes her an indispensable advisor focused on rescue operations following the Whale Eater attack.

• Celt – In his twenties, this former tenant farmer and 303rd Unit militia leader is now a pragmatic, calculating Deputy Commander of the Town Guards—equivalent to a sergeant or officer—overseeing Strock Village’s fortifications. Dressed in simple work clothes, he quietly admires Teressa-san’s skill and serves as the village’s trusted gossip source, having earned his land with reward money. Once a sandal-maker and translator of Bours’s jargon, he maintains a careful working relationship with Larry while balancing political interests, embodying calm kindness beneath his disciplined exterior.

• Roland – Roland is a dwarf bridge squad leader, former ship captain, and indispensable navigator for the Acting Captain’s crew. Practical, cautious, and authoritative, he expects clear communication, uses telepathy, and advises tactical withdrawals. Implied to be gay, he lives with Fredys and a young boy, and is the only male unmoved by bikini-armored Amazonesses. His unmatched precision is proven by his remarkable ship docking maneuvers at Oceanus.

• Captain – The middle-aged commanding officer of the Izumo is outwardly calm, experienced, and traditional, masking a ruthless, pragmatic leader who prioritizes vessel survival over subordinates and civilians. While rarely reprimanding his men, he will execute deserters. Bebel reports directly to him, holding orders to return to Kure should the protagonist fail to return from their mission.

• Larry – Larry is a dark-haired, weary 16-year-old reincarnated Second Lieutenant, cynical Acting Captain of the Izumo, and Associate Professor. A pragmatic, sardonic narrator and Mana user, he founded the Fee Grand Principality, carries Philip IV’s sword, and seeks to protect his companions. Haunted by past trauma and complicated relationships, he struggles with moral conflicts while awaiting his next assignment.

• Gida – The Izumo’s Maintenance Section Chief is an older, disheveled former finance bureaucrat on the Acting Captain’s crew. Pragmatic and outwardly insolent yet polite, she handles logistics—from transferring rescued women and seeking shore supplies to negotiating coal with Rao. Known for using skincare sesame oil, she clashes with Daran and initially resisted hiring Raphael.

• Ho – Ho is the family name of Oliver, a 17-year-old deck crew member and comrade of the protagonist. As a member of the military unit that defended Garao Village, the young man was ultimately murdered during a night watch, slaughtered alongside Marx-san.

• Izumo – The iron-hulled primary vessel, named and personified as a character herself, who loyally carries the protagonist and his crew throughout their journey.

• Mahaka – An elderly Amazoness shipping merchant in Takere, former mercenary, and experienced sailor with deep knowledge of local waters, who predicted whale sightings. Serving as a navigation advisor for a Nyunpai-funded trading company, she is blunt yet full of pragmatic folk wisdom. She speaks with a heavy accent and accompanies Rocani as an interpreter for the Hole-Eater strategy meeting.

• Rocani – An Elder of Oceanus and calculating leader of the Androgynos Group, this figure appears as a beautiful old woman but is male inside. Emotionally performative yet casual compared to the Regent, they wield significant authority, welcoming the Acting Captain, hosting Larry’s party at the Transfer Gate, interpreting during the Hole-Eater meeting, and remaining ambivalent about the handmaid trade.

• Kakuka – Kakuka, the authoritative and decisive Queen of the Amazoness’s head family, Nyunpai, is known for her short black hair, tan skin, and pragmatic leadership. She maintains a dignified demeanor during strategic negotiations and shares a friendly, trusting relationship with Larry, having previously entrusted him with critical deliveries and readily adopting his proposals to integrate new Dwarven technology.

• Saba – A surname belonging to Nikaure.

• Schweilitz – This kingdom, featuring towering academy spires and a full military arsenal of Royal Army troops, forces the protagonist to return. Ruled by a king involved in a hostage exchange, this political power holds a captive feared for execution. It also ordered the confirmation of Princess Rosa’s corpse, driving a scheme that the Queen has caught onto.

• Nikaure – A beautiful Amazoness princess and tribe ambassador, she is the sister of Ade-Saba (related to Kanve-Saba), distinguished by her compact, muscular build, dark skin, and royal blue forehead gemstone. Once a navigator seeking a Black Ship, she is currently a hostage held in Schweilitz for a potential exchange involving the Captain, though her exact whereabouts remain unknown to negotiators.

• Riera – A 13-14-year-old blonde femboy with light brown eyes in a white sundress. He is a male-bride, Commander’s daughter, offspring of Ade-princess, related to Kanve-Saba, and the Queen’s granddaughter. Direct, physically assertive, and mostly expressionless with little dialogue, he participates in the First Rite alongside Kyoyou, showing emotion only when the ritual affects him.

• Nika – A fourteen-year-old personal maid to Teressa. Freckled, has wavy bronze hair, flat chest, and prone to mocking Larry. Lady’s maid and cousin to Terese. Educated free person with a prickly personality. Terese’s lady’s maid and cousin. Known for being sharp-tongued toward Larry.

• Ade – Amazoness leader, princess, and older sister to Princess Nikaure, she is also Riera’s mother and a cousin to Kanve-Saba. Possessing a commanding presence, she is highly skeptical of the representatives sent by the Kingdom of Schweilitz and reacts with visible agitation to any threats against her capital.

• Henrietta – Earnest’s fourth wife, Henrietta, is a muscular, busty orphan, mage, and Royal Magic Academy researcher who served as a royal guard until her assassination during the Haritz Rebellion. Now parasitizing Larry’s daughter—identified by Pamela via scent—her telepathic link persists. Larry must contact her inside the Mother Mushroom to test his observation device and considers summoning her via their bond.

• Al – Alberto (Al), a massive red‑haired man recently wed to Mary, lives near the Dish Basin. He’s a companion of Hans, helping intimidate and rally elders as a villager and leader.

• His Majesty – The King of the realm possesses an expressionless, Noh mask-like face, rarely showing emotion except for brief amusement during trials. He holds absolute authority over the kingdom, presiding over high-level deliberations, giving the final word on legal transitions like duels, and maintaining supreme command over all military missions and strategic troop deployments.

• Kanve-Saba – Regent of Oceanus. Physically imposing woman with a powerful build. Wears bikini armor with a leather vest and carries a curved blade at her hip. Has a large dragon tattoo on her back. Speaks in a highly formal, majestic register, though her actual words are filtered through translation. Commands absolute respect and obedience from all Amazonesses present. Niece of Queen Kakuka and cousin to Nikaure-princess and Ade-princess.
