Hinoki pulled back from the black humanoid figure, keepin’ some distance between them, and then they told me who the newcomer was.
”That one’s a Hitogata too,” Hinoki said.
”Seriously?” I replied. “We’re gettin’ reinforcements now of all times?!”
But no—there was something more important than that. If that thing had fallen through the hole, then had it gotten past Chifumi and the others? Were they okay? No, I told myself. In the worst case, they had the Escape Balls with them. They had to be alive. I had to stay calm.
”Hinoki,” I said, “give it everythin’ we’ve got.”
”Got it,” Hinoki replied.
I was just about to start planning how to handle two Hitogata at the same time when Rei detected another approach. This time, it was someone that I knew well.
”Prince!” a voice rang out. “Wait up!”
It was Asunaro’s voice, and at the same time, an ice slide formed from the hole in the ceiling all the way down to the floor. Three people slid down it. Part of the vertical shaft’s wall was covered with ice—they must have ridden the ice all the way from the surface.
”She is on our side!” Asunaro shouted.
As if to prove Asunaro’s words were true, the fully armed new Hitogata charged straight at the one that had been born from the mass of flesh, and it started attacking it. Their blades clashed together, and the heavy sound of metal hitting metal echoed all around us. After a short struggle, both Hitogata kept swinging their weapons, and each one of them was trying to finish the other one off.
While I was watching the fast-moving battle between the two humanoid figures, I talked to Asunaro.
”Asunaro,” I said, “who the hell is that?”
”An Ancient Land Deity’s combat servant,” she replied. “This is one of the Deity’s bases—it got taken over, so it came here to take it back.”
’…So that is how it is,’ I heard Hinoki think, and they accepted Asunaro’s explanation without questioning it. For now, I would go along with it too.
The newer Hitogata was slowly getting pushed back. If it lost this fight, then we would be in trouble. I watched the two fighters move around each other, waiting for a chance to jump in and help.
But the ones who moved first were the other two people who had come down with Asunaro—Yui and Yuu. After they looked at the inside of the cave and the rectangular rock formation, they called out to me.
”Minoru,” Yui said, “buy us some time.”
”Count me in to help☆” Yuu added.
Yui pulled out her knife, and she started getting ready to activate her sorcery. It looked like some kind of high-level spell—I could see her mana changing in complex ways around her. Asunaro looked like she was ready to help them too. I could guess what they were planning to do, so I shifted to support them.
”A cleansin’ curse on this place’s impurity,” Yui chanted.
”Leave the preparations to me☆” Yuu said.
The two of them made their preparations while we protected them. Yuu threw needles in all directions to mark the area, and Yui’s sorcery would erase everything that was within that range. The Futami combo was almost ready.
The enemy Hitogata noticed what Yui was doing, and it tried to get in the way of her casting, but our allied Hitogata and the rest of us stepped in to hold it back. Seeing our ally’s blade catch the enemy’s poison-covered sword was a reassuring sight.
After a long charging time, Yui’s sorcery was finally unleashed.
”Disappear!” she shouted.
A wave of purifying destruction spread outward from Yui, and it wiped out the burned remains of the flesh that was clinging to the ceiling. The wave hit the enemy Hitogata too—but it seemed to have put up some kind of defense against it, because it was still standing after the wave passed.
”Next, we purify the main body,” Asunaro said. “Yui, that rock over there!”
”Got it!” Yui replied.
Following Asunaro’s direction, Yui ran toward the rock, and she reached out to put her hand on it.
”Guh!?” she gasped.
Her hand was pushed back.
”A barrier of divine energy…!” she said.
Yui’s palm was red and raw. She had only touched it for a split second, but it had rejected her that strongly?
’Bro,’ I heard Hinoki think, ‘toss me China. I will pop that barrier open.’
I threw China out from my shadow toward Yui. She caught it with her burned hand, and China wrapped itself around her arm and started glowing faintly.
”Alright,” Yui said.
She reached for the rock a second time. This time, her hand was not pushed back—it made solid contact. Her sorcery activated, and she started trying to break down the impurity that was clinging to the rock by using cursed energy.
”Ng… it is no good,” she said. “The impurity is being replaced as fast as I remove it. We have to cut off the supply.”
Replaced? I thought. From where? Hinoki had already cut all of the cords that were connected to the rock. I did not see any other sorcery-based connections. That meant… the ground. The impurity was being fed directly through the earth itself.
I was suspicious—the two Hitogata were still fighting each other. I squinted at the space between them and the rock, and then I saw it. A pathway, which was crawling along the ground.
”Hinoki!” I shouted. “Cut that connection!”
”On it!” Hinoki replied.
The moment that Hinoki sliced through the pathway that was embedded in the bedrock, Yui shouted.
”I can do it now!” she said.
”Go!” I yelled.
Yui activated her sorcery again. Instantly, the whole atmosphere changed. The heavy feeling that had filled the space gave way to something that felt sacred. It was like a divine area had been restored.
The effect was immediate. One of the Hitogata slowed down, and the balance of power between the two fighters flipped. The newer Hitogata took advantage of this, and it cut off the head of the slower one. The headless figure dropped down to its knees. From the open part of its neck, a dark red sludge poured out, and it tried to grab onto the other Hitogata—but it was frozen in a block of ice just before it could make contact.
The frozen sludge, together with the body and the severed head, caught on fire and fell apart. The foreign presence that had been in this divine area had been removed.
The Hitogata that was on our side put its sword away, and it walked toward me. It did not seem hostile right now. Hinoki stepped in between us.
A long silence passed. Asunaro, Yui, and Yuu gathered around us too.
”What☆ What?” Yuu said. “What’s goin’ on?”
”For real?” Yui added.
”Yeah,” Asunaro replied, “there is a lot to unpack here.”
I looked at Hinoki’s mouth, and it seemed like they were moving it—just because we could not hear them, did that mean that the two of them were actually talking to each other?
”Bingo, Prince,” Asunaro said.
Some kind of communication was happening between the two strange beings, and Asunaro was not telling me the details. It was the same pattern as before—results only, no explanation of the process.
Then something moved. Hinoki stepped back, leaving me face to face with the Hitogata. It seemed to want to disarm itself, because it put down its sword and shield, and then it knelt down in a seiza position. Before anyone could stop it, it lowered its head all the way to the ground in a full dogeza bow.
”Uh… Hinoki-san?” I said. “What is this…?”
’That there is the Ancient Land Deity’s “good faith,”‘ Hinoki thought to me. ‘Stoppin’ it would probably be a mistake. Accept the apology and move forward—that is the right call.’
”Understood,” I said to the Hitogata. “I would like to say that we should let bygones be bygones for now, but honestly, I am confused. You are going to explain the situation to me, are you not?”
The Hitogata straightened up, and it gave me a firm nod.
’This terminal is built for combat,’ Hinoki explained. ‘It cannot talk. It can communicate with us, but it cannot talk to you, bro.’
’…’
’It seems like it wants to explain things to you directly, usin’ words,’ Hinoki continued. ‘It is gonna patch things up here and take us to a conversation terminal.’
”Patch things up how?” I asked.
’…’
The Hitogata stood up, walked over to the rock, and took off its sword, its shield, and the rest of its armor. It put them on top of the rock, and the equipment turned into moss, which spread across and covered the stone. The bare rock became a weathered, moss-covered one. The Hitogata turned back toward us, and it prompted Hinoki to speak.
’There,’ Hinoki said. ‘That is good. Now let us head back to the ladies upstairs.’
’…How?’ I thought.
’Guess there is no help for it,’ Hinoki replied. ‘Hop on.’
Hinoki swelled up until they were nearly twenty meters tall. I climbed onto their back. Wait, I thought. They were not seriously planning to climb that vertical shaft with me on their back, were they?
’Yep,’ Hinoki confirmed.
”We would fall,” I said. “Would it not be better to have Moo dig a tunnel that we could walk up?”
’Too much trouble,’ Hinoki replied. ‘Asunaro, you got my back?’
’Leave it to me,’ Asunaro said.
Crackling ice grew up from the floor, and in no time at all, a spiral staircase made of ice was formed. At the same time, a strange kind of ice that was not cold stuck our feet to Hinoki’s body.
’Then let’s go,’ Hinoki said.
Hinoki carried all of us up through the narrow, steep ice tunnel that Asunaro had made, and they kept climbing without stopping. This was great—it was an easy ride. With the high-speed spiral climb, we reached the surface in no time.
”Hinoki-chan!?” Chifumi shouted.
She and the others who had been standing guard around the hole were surprised by the group that burst out of it.
”You accomplished your mission, then,” Chifumi said.
”Yeah,” I replied. “Manaka, thanks for holdin’ the hole open.”
”My pleasure,” Manaka said.
The Vanguard squad—Yurina and the others—looked exhausted, but Manaka and Sawa still seemed like they had plenty of energy left. In any case, everyone was safe, and that was all that mattered.
The Hitogata got down from Hinoki’s back, and it started walking. We followed it along the riverbank, going upstream for about ten minutes, until it stopped in front of a large rock. It looked back at us once, and then it stepped straight into the rock and disappeared.
’Let us go,’ Hinoki said.
We followed Hinoki as they led us through the rock. It was an illusion that had a barrier function—you could not enter it without permission. Everyone went through it one by one.
On the other side, an open sky spread out in front of us. The area around us looked like a mountaintop observation deck. Had we just traveled all the way from the bottom to the top?
’This is the deepest part of Kamikake Gorge,’ Hinoki explained. ‘It is a secret area. And look over there—that is the terminal that we are after, I reckon.’
The Hitogata that had led us here was standing next to a gazebo that was at the edge of the observation deck. On the raised platform that was inside the gazebo, a man who looked very strong was sitting with his legs crossed, and he lifted his head when we arrived. His expression seemed a bit stiff, but his facial features and his build were perfect. He was definitely a Strong male.
’So that is the talkin’ Hitogata, is it?’ I thought.
”Indeed,” the man replied.
Right from the first word, something was not right. Because on the outside, he looked like a real feudal lord. He had a topknot, and he was wearing a formal kimono with hakama pants. Was this the Ancient Land Deity’s idea of good taste?
Also, his mouth was fixed in a small pout, and he answered Hinoki’s question without moving it at all. Sure, being able to talk was nice, but could he at least move his lips a little bit? It was unsettling—like watching a doll speak. The conversation moved on, though, no matter how we felt about it.
”Thy efforts were truly splendid,” the lord said. “I offer my heartfelt gratitude.”
”Oh, uh, thanks,” I replied. “Glad to be of help.”
”For a time, foul winds did blow, and we found ourselves in a dire predicament—but fear not!” the lord continued. “No trace of that remains. Thou hast done a great service.”
’The way he talks is so roundabout,’ Hinoki cut in. ‘Just spell out what happened, clearly and simply, already.’
I agreed completely. The Deity ignored our confusion and frustration, and he kept going at his own speed.
”All of you wear such doubtful expressions upon your faces…” the lord said. “Very well—I shall personally dispel those doubts. Lend me your ears.”
”Hey, Hinoki…” I muttered.
’Just give up, bro,’ Hinoki replied. ‘He is one of those types…’
Still using that feudal lord tone, the Ancient Land Deity started explaining the situation. Here is the main idea: it had all started when a certain strange thing was found inside the dungeon, Kamikake Gorge. It was a strange thing that had somehow appeared in the dungeon, and the Ancient Land Deity had never seen anything like it before. The Deity decided that it was some kind of changed version of an existing strange thing, and they decided to make contact with it to get information. That was when they used the terminals that were called “Hitogata.”
First, though, I recorded the information that I had about the Ancient Land Deity. The main body of the Ancient Land Deity is located at the deepest part of the A-Class dungeon called “Sekizan” in the 13th District. It never moves from that spot. It also has multiple copies, and each one of them keeps watch over several dungeons in the 13th District. You can think of it like a company—the main body is the headquarters, and the copies are the branch managers. The reason why I had not been able to enter the dungeon was because one of those copies had refused to let me in. And this place, Kamikake Gorge, was one of those branch dungeons. One of the Ancient Land Deity’s copies was sitting in this secret area. That rock that we had seen earlier was that copy. So the Ancient Land Deity’s main body was literally the land itself, just like its name said.
Back to the story. When this dungeon’s copy came into contact with the strange thing by using a human-shaped vessel, it let its guard down, and the vessel got damaged by that strange thing. When the copy realized how dangerous this was, it sent out a distress signal to the main body, and it hid itself inside its barrier. But the strange thing took control of the human-shaped vessel, slowly broke down the barrier over many years, and it was about to take over even the copy—the rock itself.
The copies at the headquarters and at the other branch dungeons received the distress call, but because they were naturally lazy, they kept ignoring it. In the end, the main body had no choice but to act on its own. The reinforcements that were sent from the headquarters were the lord who was standing in front of us—the human-shaped vessel that we had been fighting earlier.
”Wait,” Asunaro said, “so you are not a copy of the Ancient Land Deity that lives here? You are the commander of the army that was sent from the main body?”
”Indeed,” the lord replied.
Huh, I thought. So he was middle management after all. There was no need to be so respectful to him.
Anyway, it seemed that the exploring force had started with close to a hundred human-shaped vessels on their side. That should have been more than enough to put down the strange thing, but they had misjudged what it could do. Any human-shaped vessel that fought against a damaged one would become damaged itself—like zombies that were multiplying. The battle had turned against them, and they had to retreat before they were all destroyed, and they were waiting for more reinforcements. That was the main idea.
”So why did you mess with my buddy here?” Hinoki demanded, their Kansai drawl cuttin’ through the air.
”Hmm, that is…” the lord said, hesitating.
The Ancient Land Deity had noticed that Hinoki had been freed from their seal, and that they were active outside the dungeon. Since their power had been reduced—beaten by a mage and now moving as a simple servant, as calm as they were now—the deity figured that they could let them be. But to make a final decision about whether to leave them alone, the deity apparently thought: why not use them to solve a troublesome problem while we were at it?
The test case was the damaged situation here at Kamikake Gorge. When I showed up and started acting like some eager newcomer, the waiting troops remembered the advance notice from the main body, and they quickly joined up with us.
Now, looking back at the earlier battle with that information in mind: the first thing that Moo broke was the barrier that had been created by the strange thing that was trying to take over the Ancient Land Deity, by using the damaged human-shaped vessels as materials. We broke into the secret space where the copy was hiding, and we came under attack by those damaged human-shaped vessels. The copy of the rock barely managed to defend itself with its own power, and the key to releasing that barrier—that was the key that China had received.
When the strange thing’s power started to get weaker, one of its human-shaped vessels tried to swoop in to do the final blow—a classic “fisherman’s profit” move—but Asunaro blocked them at the edge of the hole. So I had convinced them with words instead. And the timing of when they had fallen through the hole was just pure chance.
After I heard all of this, I was starting to get angry. Had we just been used as tools, with the promise of being allowed into the dungeon as the bait?
”I commend thy efforts,” the lord said.
”Uh… thanks, I guess,” I replied, but my answer was not very enthusiastic.
”Now, regarding thy reward…” the lord continued.
Oh? Wait, I thought. There was actually going to be a reward? Why had he not started with that?
”I shall convey to the main body that thou art to be granted entry to the Otherworld,” the lord announced. “Wait a while.”
”That helps,” I admitted.
Honestly, I was not satisfied with this answer—but at least they were giving us the minimum that they had promised. While I was sighing with relief, Hinoki spoke up, and their voice was full of pressure.
”That ‘while’ — how long exactly, now?” Hinoki demanded, their Kansai accent turnin’ sharp.
”Hmm… in about two years, I would say,” the lord replied.
I am going to kill him. I am going to kill him. For a moment, Hinoki and I were on exactly the same page.
”Don’t you dare think that rock-time and human-time are the same thing, now,” Hinoki snapped. “We need that restriction lifted now. Like, by tomorrow, or we are in real trouble.”
”But you see,” the lord began, “the main body decides when to—”
”Make it happen,” Hinoki cut him off. “You call yourself the Ancient Land Deity, but are you gonna break your word to a person? Are you gonna break an oath, yeah?”
At Hinoki’s challenging tone, even the lord seemed to be affected by it. A few seconds of silence passed before he answered.
”…Very well,” the lord said, and his usual formal way of speaking was shaking a little. “To break an oath is shameful. Leave it to me.”
”What can you do, middle management?” Hinoki pressed. “Are you sure about this?”
”We shall go directly to the Otherworld and petition for its release,” the lord declared.
”Can you actually do that, then?” Hinoki challenged.
”We are one and all, all and one,” the lord said.
I had no idea what that meant, but the lord seemed to be confident about it. If it turned out to be a “we went there and could not do it” situation, we would be in real trouble. I wanted some kind of guarantee.
”Then here is the thing,” I said. “Just go to the Otherworld right now and get it lifted. Kinpira Palace is an Otherworld, is it not?”
”I cannot move from this place,” the lord replied. “Therefore, I shall entrust this to thee instead.”
The lord pointed at the combat terminal that was standing nearby. Take this one with us, I thought.
”Indeed,” the lord confirmed.
”How…?” I asked.
”Just like with that Centipede over there,” the lord instructed, “make it thy ally.”
As if it were following the lord’s orders, the combat terminal came over to me, and it knelt down in front of me. Can I really… tame it? I looked at Hinoki, but they did not react. Well, I thought, I guess it cannot hurt to try.
”Okay,” I agreed.
When he heard my answer, the lord slapped his knee.
”Good,” he said. “The oath is fulfilled. Case closed. Splendid.”
The lord pulled a folding fan out from his robes, and he started to dance. At some point, the combat terminal had taken out a flute, and it started playing a tune while dancing along to its own music. Maybe because I had not tamed it yet, the combat terminal was just doing whatever it wanted. This did not bode well for the future.
”What a ridiculous scene,” Asunaro said, and her voice was full of dislike for what she was seeing.
I could not agree with her more.

Using they/them pronouns, they have a shy yet contrary personality and interact casually with the protagonist. As a mediator in the supernatural community, they secure bodies and support others, having bestowed fragments of their power upon Pape, Kram, and Risa.
• T – A first-year student at District 13 High School who has recruited K and N from East Middle into his group.
• S – A first-year student at District 13 High School who has taken B from North Middle into his squad.
• Chifumi – Eldest daughter of the Takino residence, this 160cm, J-cup kimono-clad sorcerer is Minoru’s childhood friend, Lead Majo, and trusted partner. Sporting a long brown side-tail, her bright, casual personality bridges his group with Manaka’s companions. Wielding a staff with flowing ice/water magic, she manages household admin and rearguard combat while secretly protecting him from the truth.
• B – A student originally from North Middle School who was added to S’s group.
• N – A student from East Middle with an eccentric personality who entered National High School due to complex family circumstances and used herself as leverage to negotiate a protective agreement for K.
• Rei – An electric ray monster referred to as “Old Man Rei.” He speaks with gentle wisdom and scolds others with patience. He was also captured in the wild by Minoru.
• R – A first-year student at District 13 High School who has successfully built a squad and added multiple girls, including M and A, into his group.
• Asunaro – An anomalous White Centipede monster who received a fragment of Hinoki-sama’s power. Known as Lady Asunaro, she resides in Risa’s body, serving as a second interpreter. Saved by Minoru (whom she affectionately calls “Prince Charming”), she speaks with a flat tone but has genuine emotions. Her name is heard during the goodnight sequence, and she belongs to a group with a large presence.
• A – A student from South Middle School described as an idol who has been recruited into R’s high school squad.
• Yui – Yuu’s older twin sister, this blunt Shisei student from an upper-middle sorcerer line has short hair with a white lock and a downer Jirai-kei, pink/black gothic-lolita look. Minoru’s childhood friend and a protective, mocking member of Manaka’s circle, she defends Yuu and shares guilt in their deception. Composed but critical, she wields a knife and venom-sorcery before being eaten by the Phantom.
• Yuu – Minoru’s childhood friend and Yui’s twin, this Futami twin is a Mid-guard in Manaka’s group. Dressed in a striped swimsuit or Jirai-kei/gothic-lolita fashion, she underwent a character shift from soft and timid to bubbly with sharp commentary. A needle-using Shape-Proxy Sorcery user who teases Minoru, she motivated the Founding Strong-Females’ plan before being eaten by the Phantom.
• Minoru – The protagonist and narrator is a black-haired Demon reincarnated from Japan, standing 183cm with sharp eyes. Pragmatic yet internally hurt, this eldest Tatemiya son wrongly believed his childhood friends abandoned him. Serving as ‘master’ to a mixed female group, he uses inherent spatial manipulation sorcery to command a handgun and subjugated monsters like Pape in mid-guard combat.
• M – A first-year student at District 13 High School and the childhood friend of Anonymous Student 0006, described as an atavistic strong-female who looks plain but possesses significant power.
• Futami – The family name of twins Yui and Yuu, and their younger sister Mai. It carries a lower social standing, which factored into the group’s concerns about Yuu’s ability to lead at Shisei High School.
• China – Garden eel monster with air-breathing capability. Takes bracelet form around Minoru’s hand. Guides the party through dungeon navigation. Communicates telepathically or through Hinoki translation.
• Moo – An earthworm creature that lives in the fields. Named “Moo” (モー) which is the sound a cow makes, creating a cute absurdity. Affectionate toward the narrator’s mother and seeks approval from the narrator. Uses a heart symbol (♡) to express affection.
• Manaka – Manaka Kuga is an elegant, sharp-featured Shisei High student, authoritative circle leader, and strategist for the top-tier Kuga family’s Founding Strong-Females. Minoru’s refined yet direct childhood friend, she uses a short staff for spatial/air-shaping sorcery. Known for her aristocratic bearing and “-chan” honorific, she manages security, led a year-long deception, and orchestrated an exchange battle request.
• Yurina – A stoic, analytical 165cm Plain-folk vanguard with a black ponytail and G-cup. A humanities student and eldest daughter of seven, she uses a katana and Severing Sorcery in Minoru’s party. She protects Chifumi, fights alongside Mitsuki, and addresses Minoru-sama with polite deference. Efficient and loyal, she trusts his judgment despite feeling unsettled by his escalating violence.
• Sawa – Voluptuous, broad-framed yet recently slimmed-down, this confident, bespectacled Nieda student and game otaku is an IT-savvy Shisei member and core strategist in Manaka and Mitsuki’s circles. An upper-middle tier green-manipulation sorcerer who uses a hoe, sickle, and scissors, she controls security. She is a competitive Onibara disciple who bluntly complains to her childhood friend Minoru.
• Yuri – A cheerful, energetic, and curvy Higashi High first-year student dating Shibuya. While calculating, she is fiercely loyal, even winning a third-place Best Couple Award with him. She was an acquaintance of Kibe Yurina in middle school.
