Chapter 3 The Condemnation Event Appears to Have Misfired…?

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 Graduation Day.

For this one day, the girls’ dormitory gates swing open. The young gentlemen come to the doorways, ready to escort.

Naturally, my escort would be my fiancé, Garrett-sama-…or so I assumed.

”His Highness is unable to attend due to certain circumstances. So I-that is, I shall be your escort, Sister.”

The one who appeared at my door was David Howard, age fifteen. Need I say more? He is the heir to House Howard-my younger brother.

The Howards are a family deeply connected to the royal house, so many of us possess magic. My brother, too, is enrolled at this academy.

However, even siblings can have completely different magical affinities. I specialize in water magic and healing. David, on the other hand, apparently has talent in fire-attribute attack magic; he’s currently in training.

Why is my brother here? The question surfaced-then vanished as my mind supplied a neat answer: Ah, right. Game mechanics.

I placed my hand lightly on his arm.

”Good day to you, David. I shall entrust myself to your care. Thank you.”

David’s expression remained stiff, so I gave him a gentle smile.

Lately-as though to prove that his so-called “big sister’s boy” phase never happened-my brother, smack in the middle of puberty, had grown brusque and unreadable. Right now, his lips were pressed together and he was pointedly looking away.

Classic trope-your own family siding with the condemnation. But that would mean challenging His Majesty’s approved engagement. I’d like to think my brother isn’t that foolish, but game mechanics are nothing to scoff at. Is he going to be all right?

The graduation ceremony concluded without incident. Garrett-sama escorted me to the ballroom, and again, nothing out of the ordinary occurred.

My fiancé, with his striking blond hair and blue eyes, was every inch the prince from an otome game-his lineage and looks more than befitting a “favorite character.” In his formal attire, his natural beauty took on an added edge of handsomeness, drawing sighs of admiration from all around.

”Forgive me for not escorting you earlier,” he murmured in apology.

With so many eyes upon us, we couldn’t speak freely-but since I hadn’t minded in the first place, I accepted his apology with a soft smile.

The dance held after the graduation ceremony was practically a mini social gathering in itself. Not only graduates but all academy students attended, making it an important occasion for learning social etiquette.

When His Majesty King Lendel gave the signal from the dais, a long, flowing melody filled the air. The highest-ranking couple-Garrett-sama and myself-led the first dance, and one by one, the dance floor filled with young couples joining in. The parents’ generation, watching their children grow, looked on as honored guests with fond smiles.

As a betrothed couple, we were permitted to continue into a second dance. But opportunities to dance with a prince were rare indeed. After one dance, I yielded the floor to the next young lady.

 …That’s strange. Nothing is happening.

After several dances with different partners, I claimed fatigue and stepped out of the circle, raising a glass of cold drink to my lips.

Hmm? I tilted my head-then had another thought: Ah, I see. This, too, is a kind of correction.

Condemnation is a staple event in otome games, but while such a scene works in fiction, in reality it would lead to nothing but self-destruction-not a happy ending. Even if this were a game world, for us living in it, it is undeniably real. Perhaps a correction mechanism is in place to prevent self-destruction.

In truth, in the Kingdom of Rendel, where love marriages are common, the dissolution of a formally contracted engagement is not especially scandalous. The barriers to annulment are already quite low. For a second prince, the bride’s rank wouldn’t be such a major concern-though a baron’s daughter might struggle as a prince’s consort. If she were adopted into an earl’s family, the matter would be resolved. There was no need to dig a grave for oneself.

Then again, if one must dig a grave, it’s better to save it for after death. The so-called “condemnation event at the graduation party” only leads to a living hell.

An engagement is a contract, and for nobles, it carries the King’s seal. To break it would require following the proper annulment procedures, settling financial accounts, and-most of all-securing the King’s approval to revoke his sanction.

Needless to say, openly challenging the King’s approval in public is unthinkable. And when the matter is one of romantic feeling, it is all the more condemnable-one earns only the accusation of being an idiot who cannot distinguish public from private. This was common sense for any noble, let alone anyone who had actually studied at this academy.

I silently reproached myself for overreacting to the words “condemnation event” and for underestimating both Garrett-sama and Charlotte.

Likely, if the proper procedures are followed-or if a condemnation is truly indispensable as a game event-a small, private affair will take place after the graduation party, attended only by the parties involved.

A little anticlimactic, perhaps-but what mattered was dissolving the engagement without sullying my family name or my reputation. I had no attachment to the idea of a “comeuppance reversal.” In fact, if I cooperated actively, everyone could be happy.

Concluding that the public condemnation event was a misfire, I turned my attention to enjoying idle conversation with friends I’d spent the past three years with.

Samantha Lott, Countess’s daughter and my classmate, was a gentle, elegant woman and an excellent listener. Many underclassmen sought her out for advice. Though soft-spoken and seemingly content to play the listener, she was in fact a woman of strong conviction. When the moment called for it, her advice was always on point-which was why everyone respected her.

”Rebecca-sama, will you be receiving your royal consort’s education at the palace after graduation? I cannot imagine you need further instruction, not when you’ve already received Comins-sama’s personal seal of approval.”

She smiled softly, then grew serious, her eyes fixed on mine.

”We truly do understand, you know. The education at Lemres Academy has always been of the highest standard. But Comins-sama is one of the palace’s most distinguished etiquette instructors. She accepted the post here precisely because you, Rebecca-sama, were in attendance. Thanks to you, we too can make our social debuts with full confidence. We are sincerely grateful.”

 ”Well, I-I”

 ”Rebecca-oneesama!”

Just as I was about to demur, a voice called out from behind me.

I turned to find Sophie Clost, baron’s daughter, rushing toward us with footwork that pushed the limits of ladylike propriety, her expression one of barely contained urgency.

One year my junior, Sophie was a bright, cheerful young woman with a radiant smile and eyes that sparkled with intelligence. But now, she trembled with barely concealed indignation.

”Please do compose yourself. If Comins-sama were to spot you, you’d receive quite a reprimand.”

”That’s not what matters! Sister, I-“

”Indeed… This is truly troublesome, isn’t it.”

Over Sophie’s shoulder, I caught sight of an impossible scene, and let out a sigh as I narrowed my eyes.

 Summary:

Rebecca expects the standard otome game condemnation event at her graduation ball, but nothing happens. She rationalizes it as a self-preservation correction mechanic and relaxes into the evening. Her classmate Samantha thanks her sincerely for bringing a top etiquette instructor to the academy, just as Sophie rushes over with urgent news that something has gone wrong.

 —

 Trivia:

Rebecca and David have opposing magic affinities: water/healing vs. fire/attack.

The Kingdom of Rendel has low barriers to engagement annulment, unlike typical noble settings.

Comins-sama only agreed to teach at Lemres Academy because Rebecca was a student there.

Sophie calls Rebecca “oneesama” – the only character to use that specific address form.

Howard family has deep ties to the royal house, explaining their high magical aptitude.
