Volume 4 Chapter 111 Idol
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The sisters we picked up at the water-supply cliff. We couldn’t understand their language – Ms. Leakle couldn’t either – so we questioned them using Pamela and mana. The older sister is Ilamactli, age nine. The younger is Yamawel, age five.
As for the older one, she had a memory – whether it was a god or a real person, unclear – of a woman who seemed to be her mother, pointing at a stone statue and calling it the same name.
The younger one had almost no memories at all, and even those she had weren’t clear.
Well, since we couldn’t understand the sisters’ language either, this was about all we could get out of them.
But the older sister had a memory image of a city – even bigger than the capital of Schweilitz, if I’m honest. When I asked Ms. Leakle about that city, she wasn’t certain.
”I think it’s the Mexictli Kingdom, but when I last visited, I don’t recall there being a city that large.”
According to her, nearly a hundred years ago, the Amazoness first came to this land, bringing smallpox that killed eighty percent of the native population who had no immunity.
After that, there were no signs of recovery for decades. Then, with help from the Androgynos Group, agricultural reforms took root, and the population finally started growing – around thirty years ago, she said.
”Well, thirty years is plenty of time. It must have grown a bit.”
That’s a laid-back way to put it – but it probably depends on how much help the Androgynos Group actually gave. Still, these kids were wearing cotton clothes and something like leather shoes.
A few days later.
We were out on the open ocean, with no land in sight.
”Hey! Weasel Kid!”
The kitchen cook’s shout rang out.
A moment later, a small girl dashed past me as I headed to the dining hall.
”Damn, she stole more jerky again.”
The cook came down to the deck, breathing heavily, his hefty frame straining.
He’s normally easygoing – hardly ever raises his voice.
”Acting Captain, do something about that Weasel Kid, will you? She keeps stealing our remaining jerky. I’ve scolded her a dozen times, but she won’t listen.”
He was still catching his breath.
”Weasel Kid” was the younger of the two sisters we’d picked up. Her real name is Yamawel, but it’s hard to pronounce, and she’s always darting around – so someone
About half a day after that, the cook came down from the Dining Hall to the deck below. He stopped short when he saw the Weasel Kid.
”It’s you! I told you – no more!”
She’d done it again: snatched some jerky from the kitchen the moment his back was turned. The Weasel Kid grinned and darted off. The cook chased her, but he couldn’t catch up.
”Acting Captain! Do something about that Weasel Kid! She keeps stealing our remaining jerky. I’ve told her so many times, but she won’t listen!”
”Weasel Kid” was the younger of the two sisters we’d rescued. Her real name was Yamawel, but it was hard to pronounce. With her constant darting around, someone had started calling her that, and the nickname stuck.
Kenze was already looking after her own child Shion, so she’d taken charge of the sisters too.
”I’ll talk to her. But you know she can’t understand our language, right?”
”I know that, sir. But at this rate, we’ll be out of jerky by next month.”
The cook said that and went back to the kitchen. I followed him to the Dining Hall.
The sisters – Kutori and the Weasel Kid – had cried through the first day and night. But by the second day, they were eating properly. Kutori, the elder, had a maternal side – she helped take care of Kenze’s child Shion and cooed at the newborns that Kamea and Leakle had recently taken out of their storage jars. The younger one, though, wouldn’t sit still. She ran around the whole ship, charming everyone and getting spoiled.
Not that there were sweets to spoil children with. But Tomoe spoiled her the most. Because of that, the kid learned Japanese words like “konnichiwa” and “itadakimasu” before she learned the Schweilitz language.
Then someone taught her a word in Schweilitz: “grandma.” She hurled it right at Kenze – the guardian quick enough to keep up with her speed. Poor Kenze had to chase her down and spank her every time.
Everyone was surprised and delighted by this whirlwind of Weasel Kid and Kutori that had blown in out of nowhere. But…
”Just a heads up – once we reach the canal, we should keep them hidden.”
Ms. Leakle said that. When I asked why, the reason turned out to be complicated.
The Amazoness had a principle: they didn’t interfere in their subjects’ internal conflicts. They protected them from external attacks in exchange for taxes. They had some say in economic matters for tax purposes, but as a rule, they didn’t interfere in the religious or customary practices of those living on their land.
The problem was that the people here practiced human sacrifice. And quite frequently.
Not animal sacrifice. Human.
The targets weren’t just people from their own territory – they also took people captured in battles with other territories. The battles themselves apparently had an element of ritual about them.
They cut open the victim’s chest while they were still alive, and removed the heart. The heart was offered to the gods. And what’s more, the remaining body was boiled and eaten as a ritual meal.
This was no joke. We had to avoid getting entangled in this.
”If Kutori and the Weasel Kid are recognized as part of their tribe, they could be sacrificed. So it’s best to keep them below deck until we’re through the canal. And even if they were captured, the Amazoness can’t interfere.”
That made sense, given their position. But if it did happen – if those two popular girls were caught by the locals – Tomoe and the other fighters on this ship would go to retrieve them. I didn’t know what kind of military force the locals had. But after sailing the world, I couldn’t imagine any organization successfully resisting this ship’s most dangerous crew members if they got serious about rescuing two little girls.
The real problem was what happened after we retrieved them. How would the Amazoness treat us? If they’d stay out of it, fine. But I didn’t want to be seen as an enemy and attacked. We could fight them off with the Izumo’s firepower, but it would damage the friendly relationship we’d built up with them.
With all that in mind, as much as I hated to do it to the two girls, we had to keep them confined somewhere until we cleared the canal.
That evening, the Izumo approached land. For the first time since reaching the New Continent, we saw a settlement.
Smoke rose from houses – probably the evening meal preparation. Farmland was visible on the hillsides. Many people were on the beach, probably gazing at the Izumo – likely the first ship they’d ever seen. Strange bird calls could be heard.
”Lots of people.”
”Must be fertile land.”
Comments like that came from the crew watching the shore. I could feel their gazes begging to go ashore.
Back on the Southern Continent, we’d been too pressed for time. Even when we saw people on land, we never felt like going to meet them out of curiosity. But this was different. We were on the return voyage, with more room to breathe, and a sightseeing mood had set in.
But according to Ms. Leakle, this was the territory of the Mexictli Kingdom – the most powerful kingdom in the region. We might face them across a negotiating table at some future New Continent partition conference. I didn’t want to make contact needlessly and give them a bad impression.
And there was also Kutori and the Weasel Kid to consider. We couldn’t go ashore without a good reason.
I brushed off the crew’s looks, went up to the Bridge, and gave the order to head out to sea. By the time we were a good distance from the coast, the sun had set.
Ms. Leakle said there were no reefs or islands around here, so we sailed on by starlight.
According to Kamea, we were at twenty degrees north latitude.
Even at night, it was hot and humid. Some crew members were lying out on the deck.
And it wasn’t just lying around. Despite the heat, some were tangling their bodies together.
I finished writing the logbook and was heading to the Dining Hall when I noticed two small shadows peeping from a dark corner, watching the naked bodies writhing in the darkness.
Too early for that, I thought, and dropped a knuckle on each of their heads – Kutori and the Weasel Kid. I marched them to the former Captain’s quarters.
”Kenze. Don’t let these two out of the room at night.”
I pushed the sisters inside.
”What happened?” Kenze’s sleepy voice came through the dark.
”They were peeping at… adults doing it. Too young for that.”
I said it a bit roundabout. Couldn’t bring myself to say “sex” in front of kids.
”You do the same thing every night next door. And you dare say that?”
”Hey, I do it in the middle of the night.”
”Middle of the night means we can hear the noises. And you leave the door open.”
I left the door open because of the heat. My intention had been to do it after the children were asleep.
”So tomorrow night, you’ll close the door?”
But tomorrow night was Kenze’s turn.
”That’s not the point. I’m saying you can’t stop their curiosity.”
In other words, she was saying it was unavoidable that the young sisters would see things they shouldn’t. No, no, that wasn’t right.
But there wasn’t much I could do about it in the tight confines of the ship. For now, I told her to keep them inside at night – if they fell overboard, we wouldn’t be able to save them – and headed to the Dining Hall.
The kitchen lights were off. Bebel was on night watch by the window. Pamela and Alyona were at a table drinking tea.
When Alyona saw me, she set a tray on the table in front of me: brown rice, pan-seared mahi-mahi, and soup made from dried taro root.
”Sorry, it’s gone cold.”
She apologized, but it was my fault for being late. She was technically my slave, so maybe her slightly deferential attitude came naturally.
”Alyona, has the Weasel Kid been causing trouble?”
I asked while sipping the taro soup.
”Ms. Kenze caught her and gave her a real earful. She’s been behaving.”
According to her, the Weasel Kid stayed in the Dining Hall whenever her big sister Kutori was there. And during those visits, she’d stolen jerky a few times.
”She doesn’t understand our language, so it can’t be helped. She’s still little. But later, Ms. Kenze brought her to apologize.”
Apparently, the Weasel Kid had learned to say “I’m sorry” in Schweilitz. When the kitchen cook heard that, he secretly slipped her some malt candy. She probably wanted more – she kept peeping into the kitchen, and her big sister Kutori scolded her for it.
As for Kutori, she came to help in the kitchen mornings and evenings. She carried flour and bread from the storeroom and wiped things clean. A quick learner. Even without a shared language, if you showed her what to do with gestures, she’d do it correctly.
”She’s such a smart girl. I wish I had one like that.”
Alyona looked at me as she said it. Was she hinting she wanted a child?
”Children are too noisy for my liking.”
Pamela said flatly. She was an elf mage, and based on past cases, no matter how much sexual activity she engaged in, she could never bear children. Maybe she was jealous.
”Hmph. In a few decades, you’ll die. Then I’ll look for a nice young elf mage.”
What a terrible thing to say. Me, dying of old age.
”What about Ms. Henrietta, who summoned you?”
”Oh, I forgot about her.”
I doubted the smart Pamela had really forgotten about her original master, Ms. Henrietta. But she’d never even talked to her yet. Maybe it didn’t feel real.
We talked while I ate. But the conversation kept circling back to Kutori and the Weasel Kid. It seemed to be the same for everyone else on the ship. Their faces weren’t Western like Schweilitz, nor were they like Tomoe’s – and yet, before we knew it, they’d become the crew’s idols.
After dinner, Alyona made tea. I had her pour me another cup and took it to Bebel.
”Shouldn’t you be resting after fertilization?”
I handed her the tea.
”Sabby kept insisting she needed rest time for her period, so she took the day off. I had to cover for her until midnight.”
Well, Bebel was the squad leader, so that couldn’t be helped. It had been about ten days since fertilization, but for some reason, she kept rubbing her belly.
”Hey, once we clear the canal, we should be back in Schweilitz in about two months, right?”
”If we get through the canal safely.”
I added “safely” because of the sisters. And because I wasn’t sure we’d make it through the canal without incident. If it were just Amazoness, there’d be no problem. But this was a land with a culture of human sacrifice. And there were a lot of people. Made me nervous.
”What are you going to do when you get back to the kingdom?”
Not that I thought I had any say in it.
”Probably make the rounds of my kids’ places.”
I said it seriously, but Bebel burst out laughing.
”What’s so funny?”
”Nothing. Just wondering how long it’d take.”
Now that she mentioned it. Let’s see. Louise’s son near Kure. How many kids I had in the Royal Capital – that one was a bit scary. Nico’s place in Viscount Bizan’s territory. Had to stop by Strock Village even though I didn’t have kids there. Was Isabella in Bohemia? Reinhardt and Teressa in the Fee Grand Principality. How much had they grown? Was the principality even still standing? That worried me. Then Ellie’s place. If she was in the Fee Grand Principality, that was fine, but if she was with Frontier Count Pugachev, that might take a year. And I should visit Young Baldie (Veresk) too.
”What are you spacing out for?”
Bebel’s voice brought me back to reality.
”Nothing. What about you?”
”That’s easy. Leave the ship, use my pay and severance to build a house, raise my kids.”
For a delinquent, that was pretty sensible.
”Your kid will be smart like Kutori. I’ll live in the Royal Capital so they can go to school.”
”Don’t push yourself. Your kid will definitely be a mischievous brat like the Weasel Kid. And since you’ll have a child, don’t quit the Navy – get a land posting.”
We talked like that for a while, then I went back to Pamela. Alyona had already returned to the women’s quarters.
I told Pamela what Kenze had said about hearing noises from next door.
”Then let’s do it in the Medical Bay.”
”Sorry, but as acting captain, I can’t do inappropriate things in the workplace.”
”But if we do it in your room, they’ll hear us in Kenze’s room. And Kutori and the Weasel Kid will hear too. Isn’t that worse? Doing it in the workplace might be a bit exciting too. It’ll remind you of the Magic Academy and the Bizan Magic School.”
Now that she mentioned it, we had done it in the laboratory. Well, sometimes it was okay, I suppose. And in my past life…
I stood up, put my arm around the shoulder of the short, lolita-esque elf mage, and left the Dining Hall.
I could hear someone clicking their tongue behind us.

Summary:
The Izumo crew picked up two indigenous sisters, Ilamactli and Yamawel, at a water-supply cliff, but language barriers and a horrifying revelation about human sacrifice rituals now force them to keep the girls hidden while navigating Mexictli Kingdom waters.
Daily life aboard ship has made the sisters beloved mascots – Kutori the responsible elder and Weasel Kid the chaotic younger – but the crew’s easygoing dynamic is shadowed by the knowledge that if the locals recognize the girls, they could be sacrificed with no Amazoness intervention possible.
—
Trivia:

It also ordered the confirmation of Princess Rosa’s corpse, driving a scheme that the Queen has caught onto.
• Captain – The middle-aged commanding officer of the Izumo is outwardly calm, experienced, and traditional, masking a ruthless, pragmatic leader who prioritizes vessel survival over subordinates and civilians. While rarely reprimanding his men, he will execute deserters. Bebel reports directly to him, holding orders to return to Kure should the protagonist fail to return from their mission.
• Kenze – Kenze is a muscular, brown-skinned Amazoness and former Tashkurgan operative turned research student. Energetic and urgent, she wears gauntlet-like armor, has dragon tattoos, and fights with precision. Larry must contact her inside the Mother Mushroom to test his observation device and considers summoning her via their bond.
• Sabby – The protagonist’s subordinates include a tall, lanky, curly-haired artillery Corporal with high mana who is rebellious, incentive-driven, and blunter than Bebel, graphically discussing sexual experiences. The other is a polite, anxious Amazoness who speaks formally but acts like a restless country bumpkin, questioning the protagonist’s identity and reporting his condition to Pamela.
• Frontier Count Pugachev – A count from the Schweilitz frontier who previously received the protagonist, Kenze, and the Old Master’s village master in audience. The meeting established a pattern for three-person delegations.
• Principal – The mother of Line and the administrative head of the institution.
