Chapter 60 A Small Incident In Broad Daylight
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Luckily, it’s a Saturday in a bustling street. There are enough people around, and I’m used to blending in. Let’s try to tail them while keeping a certain distance.
Well, even if I get caught, it’s not like it’s a big deal or anything. I was planning to discuss Claire and Lana’s situation with Isabella. It’s better to gather materials for Claire’s internal investigation first, but the order might get a bit mixed up.
’I have something I want to discuss, but I’m with someone, and it’s troubling me…’
If I say it like that, it should be fine, yeah. After all, Isabella and I have a secret.
By the way, I’ll buy some packaged snacks on the way and put them in my bag. They’re for eating at home.
Of course, I’ll keep an ear out for Isabella and the guy’s conversation――
”Hey, can you make up your mind already? I’m also getting pressure from my family…”
”——.”
The guy’s voice is pretty loud, and he sounds excited. On the other hand, Isabella’s voice is getting smaller, making it hard to hear.
”Aren’t you being told various things too?”
”…!”
”Work, work… if you don’t make a decision somewhere, it’ll be… Hey, I think getting married is a good thing too!”
The guy leans in close to Isabella, embracing her shoulders. Isabella’s purple tail twitches, but she doesn’t push him away.
Hmm…?
It seems I’ve caught a glimpse of Isabella’s relationship with the guy. He’s probably her boyfriend or fiancé, maybe even someone her family has arranged for her to marry.
The guy wants to marry Isabella, but she’s prioritizing her work and doesn’t have the time for it right now…?
The fact that she doesn’t push him away even when he’s embracing her shoulders means they have a pretty close relationship, both socially and physically.
”…!”
”If you say that, it’s not going to end well, is it?”
Isabella seems to be getting angry, but the guy is taking it lightly. The 2 of them continue walking with their arms around each other, about to enter a nearby café.
”Well, well, did they have fun?”
I’ve got a good read on their relationship, and I’m not interested in following them into the café. Now, let’s continue my stroll…when suddenly, a scream pierces the air.
”Ah! Thief!”
A voice of an elderly woman came from over there. When I looked, a young man with a bright red bag was running towards me.
He had a knife… Hmm, I can sense magic power from him, although it’s small. He has magic power in his legs and knife. He’s quite fast, too.
He must have thought he could get away with it in broad daylight because he has magic power.
”Get out of the way!”
The mugger is coming. I caught a glimpse of Isabella moving away from her companion.
…I shouldn’t just ignore this. But I’ll act quickly and jump at the mugger.
”What the… You bastard!”
The mugger is taken aback by my sudden movement. The man raises his arm quickly to avoid my attack. He doesn’t seem to have the courage to stab me.
”Well, I’ll give you credit for that.”
I focus my magic power on my arm and body, and release a shockwave that shakes the air. The man doesn’t seem to know how to defend himself against magic, and takes the full force of the shockwave head-on.
”Ugh…!!”
This shockwave is a low-level attack magic, and it doesn’t have much range or killing power. It’s only good for knocking people down. But in a situation like this, it’s very useful.
The mugger crumples to the ground, and I catch him. I quickly knock the knife out of his hand, and now I can relax.
”You bastard…!”
”Look, the police are here.”
When I look, Isabella is there, her eyes blazing with anger, and magic power emanating from her hand. As expected, Police Inspector Isabella is a force to be reckoned with. People can tell she’s strong just by looking at her.
”I’m arresting you for attempted mugging. Don’t resist… Put your hands up and get down on the ground.”
The mugger is intimidated by her scary voice and loses his will to fight.
”Damn, it wasn’t supposed to go like this…”
The mugger gives up and obediently gets down on the ground.
After a while, a police officer arrives from the nearby area. Someone must have called them. A brief investigation begins on the spot, but with Isabella there, it goes very smoothly.
”…He’s a student at the Magic Academy. I’ll vouch for him. He only used the minimum necessary magic, so it’s okay to let him go.”
”Well, well! It’s Isabella’s the Police Inspector, after all…!”
The police officers following behind her appeared, and they quickly began investigating the scene and taking the culprit away. It wasn’t a big deal, really ―― just a pickpocketing incident that got caught by a passerby right away.
There were many witnesses, and both the victim and the culprit were right there. So, after about an hour, Isabella and I were let go.
”Thanks for your hard work on your day off, Police Inspector!”
”No, it was nothing… Well, I’ll leave the rest to you.”
”Leave it to us! And thanks to you too, boy!”
”No need to thank me, really…”
About an hour passed, and the crowd dispersed. The bustling street returned to its usual peaceful state. The police officers were gone, leaving only Isabella and me behind.
”Phew, I never thought I’d run into you here…”
”I love sweets, you know.”
I opened my bag and showed her the snacks I had just bought. I made sure not to reveal that I had been tailing her. That’s when I realized her partner was nowhere to be found.
”Hey, didn’t you have a partner, Police Inspector…?”
”You saw him, huh? He said he was going back ahead and left.”
”…Huh?”
Can I believe that? Would he really just leave someone behind like that?
I was shocked, and Isabella looked sad, shaking her head.
”It’s okay, it wasn’t a fun story anyway… But Alba, you’ve got guts, standing up to someone with a knife like that.”
”Haha, I’m a magician, after all. I’d want to do something about it, even if it happened right in front of me.”
”…You’re amazing. You’ll make a great magician.”
I think I just gained some points with Isabella. Well, it’s not hard to deal with small-time crooks like that.
Isabella adjusted her glasses and looked at me, her eyes showing interest in me as an individual.
”How about I treat you to lunch instead of a thank-you gift?”
”That sounds great. I’m getting hungry anyway.”
The sun was shining brightly overhead. When I checked my pocket watch, it was already past noon. What a great opportunity. Maybe I’ll ask her out on a little date.
