Dark Noble 109

Chapter 109 Two Envelopes

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I don’t know the details of that incident. It happened before I was born, after all.

But from what I’ve heard, the Golden Crab tried to muscle in on the royal capital’s territory, which led to a conflict, and some of their members were sent to the bottom of the sea.

That’s why my mother, Karia, had a strong dislike for the Golden Crab.

’They’re the kind of people who’d throw away their humanity for beauty. If they come crawling back to the royal capital, I’ll string them up under the streetlights.’

She would say things like that. So, of course, we wouldn’t have any dealings with the Golden Crab.

”…So you two are enemies, huh?”

”That’s how it is. Since there’s no connection to that incident, they might still hold a grudge, or maybe they’ve already forgotten…”

Isabella tapped her elbow rest, looking like she was deep in thought.

”I understand…. But we can’t just ignore the Golden Crab incident. Let’s think of a plan, and I’ll ask for your cooperation.”

”I’ll consider it once it’s more concrete.”

For a moment, Isabella looked displeased. But she didn’t say anything more and stood up.

”There’s investigation data from before in that envelope. Take a look.”

It was the envelope she had taken out of her pocket earlier. I held it up firmly to show my understanding. Isabella nodded lightly and left the VIP room.

After my meeting with Isabella ended, I returned to the mansion. I was tired…. As I was relaxing in the living room, Belzeda came in.

”You must be tired, young master.”

”…Yeah, you must be tired too. Did something happen?”

Whenever Belzeda comes to the mansion on weekends, it’s usually because something’s up. I want to hear about it as soon as possible.

 ”Yes, something a bit troublesome…”

Belzeda glanced at the maid in the living room. It’s rare for him to want to keep something from the mansion staff. I asked the maid to leave, and we settled in.

 ”Sorry, young master.”

”Don’t worry about it. Tell me.”

”There was a letter at our boundary office…”

 I made a skeptical face.

The boundary office is a checkpoint located at the border of each mafia’s territory――like a customs office, in a way.

If they don’t have a connection with the opposing mafia, they must go through the Border Affairs Office before entering their territory. That’s the rule.

However, if it’s a friendly organization with a connection, they wouldn’t send a letter to the Border Affairs Office in the first place. If they do send a letter, it’s likely a new or unfriendly organization.

 ”Where is it from?”

 ”It’s from the ‘Golden Crab’.”

Belzeda pulled out an envelope from his bag――it was a high-quality paper mixed with blue powder, and it even had the Golden Crab’s trademark golden scissor mark.

What timing. I had just talked to Isabella a little while ago.

 ”Let’s read it for now.”

I opened the envelope and took out the letter. This one was also on paper mixed with silver powder. These people are loaded.

 ”Hmm…”

 ’Dear Midnight Fangs,

We apologize for the sudden contact.

We are deeply sorry for our past mistakes, which led to our communication being cut off for many years.

Anyway, regarding the heat of summer――’

It’s long-winded and annoying… I forced myself to keep reading. Finally, the main point came out in the latter half.

’We wish to make amends with you and form a united front against national authority.’

 ”Hmm…”

”…What’s the content? Are they proposing a truce or something?”

”That’s exactly what they’re saying. They want to make amends with us.”

 ”I’m against it.”

Belzeda said firmly. It seems he doesn’t trust the Golden Crab.

”The order is wrong. First, the person in charge should come and apologize with their life on the line. Then we can talk about a truce. Proposing a truce from the start is just ridiculous.”

Well, that’s a pretty barbaric way of thinking for a mafia. But there’s some logic to it. Suddenly proposing a truce is indeed impolite.

And the phrase “united front against national authority”… This is…

”As a matter of fact, I just met with Isabella, the Police Inspector, a little while ago.”

 ”Oh, she’s our handler, right?”

 ”She said that…”

I summarized my earlier conversation with Isabella. Belzeda nodded in understanding after hearing the story.

”I see, so the Golden Crab is already being targeted by the police, huh?”

”That’s how it is. This timing isn’t a coincidence, is it? The Golden Crab is in quite a predicament, aren’t they?”

Isabella didn’t have a hand, or so it seemed. In reality, she might have already taken a step forward.

 Belzeda floated a ferocious smile.

”I get it. This is a chance, isn’t it?”

”That’s right. I was wondering what to do about Isabella’s request.”

I held the letter from the Golden Crab and waved it around.

”I want to hear your opinion. If you had to choose between the wolf and the crab, which one would you eat?”

”That’s an easy one, of course I’d eat the crab.”

”I agree. Crabs are good boiled or grilled, after all.”
