Chapter 18
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I was caught by a Troublesome Girl.
There’s this girl named Frederica Vermillion, who’s supposedly the daughter of a powerful figure in this city… but why is she working at the reception desk of a dismantling area?
And what’s more, she seems to be just going through the motions, or maybe even slacking off.
I’ve caught her attention, and from now on, I’ve been told to report to her reception desk.
It’s not like my true identity has been exposed or anything, but if she starts spreading rumors about me, it’ll be a real pain.
So, from now on, I think I’ll be heading to her reception desk at the dismantling area.
She looks great and seems approachable, but since her parent is a powerful figure in the city… I, who have no ambition, find her intimidating.
In the stories I’ve read in my past life, there were protagonists who didn’t want to stand out, and some people thought that was because they lacked ambition.
If you want to be a protagonist with a certain level of popularity, you need to have a somewhat decent personality, I think.
But if you set your personality to be decent, you’ll start thinking about avoiding trouble in the future, which is unavoidable.
Even if you gain a position of power, it’s unlikely that you’ll have 0 enemies, and if that’s the case, it’s better not to make enemies from the start.
So, I try to act like I have a decent personality, but in the end, I still stand out…
”Guess I’ll just have to do something about my appearance…”
But I don’t want people to get too close to me, like someone who’s unsanitary or has a contagious disease, so I’d rather wear protective equipment than regular clothes.
A brand-new, undamaged leather armor would stand out, so maybe I’ll look for a used one instead.
I can use Magic Armor, so I’d be fine even if I were naked, and if I adjust the area to only cover what’s necessary, I can conserve my magical energy too.
Depending on the results of the appraisal, I might not earn enough to be troubled, so I might go check out the store tomorrow.
Now, I took the direct path from the dismantling area, holding the documents with the appraisal results, and entered the Guild.
It’s bustling…
There are a lot more people than when I registered, and I can see relatively young people returning from the shallow areas.
As expected, there are a lot of men… Ah, I also see a magician woman who showed me how to use magic in the dungeon.
They continue hunting near the 1st district, so she must have come back earlier than me.
However, she’s not in line at the reception desk, and instead is with the two attackers, while the leader of the shield team is holding the documents and waiting in line.
Is he handling the paperwork as the representative?
It seems like other teams have their representatives waiting in line too, so I’ll just join a random line.
”Hmm…”
To avoid getting in the way of people passing by and causing a commotion, I’ll stand by the wall and look for an available line, but… they’re all about the same.
So I joined the same line as when I registered, and after a while, it was my turn.
”Ah, good to see you’re safe.”
”Yeah, is this the right document to submit?”
The receptionist, who remembered me, looked relieved that I had returned without any injuries.
But when I handed her the document, her expression suddenly became stern.
”… Didn’t I tell you it’s dangerous to go alone to the deeper areas?”
”Yes.”
”Didn’t you only buy a map of the 1st district?”
”Yes.”
”So, why are you hunting demon wolves in the 2nd district and beyond?”
Every time I’m questioned, she presses in closer, pointing to the records of magic wolves in the documents and interrogating me.
She probably thinks I’m some kind of naive rich boy, and wants to avoid getting into trouble if I get hurt.
But every time she presses in, my gaze falls on her chest, which is getting crushed.
”The other adventures was busy dealing with the monsters in the 1st district, and I happened to encounter goblins, so I didn’t have a hard time.”
At my response, she let out a sigh and straightened her posture.
”Haa… well, since you didn’t get hurt, that’s good, I suppose. Um, is there a mistake in the numbers written…?”
”Something?”
She’s checking if the content of the report is accurate, and it’s only now that she’s looking at the number of spoils of war.
”Is this number correct?”
”It should be… there’s even the name of the person who did the inspection, so you can confirm it with them if you want.”
”Haa… what?”
There, she’s surprised again.
”What’s going on?”
”It’s just… the name of the inspector… did you really get her to respond to this?”
”Yes… if the other person isn’t lying about her name, that is.”
”Aah… if it’s her, she’ll definitely expose you right away, and there’s no one who would dare to lie. Which means it’s the real deal… how did you get her to respond to this?”
It’s clear that she’s the daughter of someone powerful.
If I was lying, I’d be in trouble if the real person found out.
I’m the kind of guy who thinks of reporting as just a way to inform, but some people say it’s a bad thing.
Most of the time, it’s because they’re the ones who did something wrong and got reported.
Setting that aside… how should I respond to this?
”No matter what you say… Since that person’s reception was open, I approached and was told to line up somewhere else. However, when she realized it was only magic stones, I was treated accordingly.”
”Is that all? If that’s the case, wouldn’t it be possible for her to also receive other adventurer if they only had magic stones?”
Indeed, if she only selects magic stones, others can receive treatment from her, and it’s likely that those who do so would normally be lined up at her reception, which would be quite crowded.
In reality, it was empty, and if that’s the case, there must be another factor… perhaps she’s suspicious of my true identity.
Even if I have an alibi, it’s too risky to say it out loud here, so…
”I don’t know about that.”
I said, trying to downplay it.
”Well, in any case, the numbers are quite high. In the 2nd district, the number of encounters increases, so people are increasing the number of people per team. As a result, the number of teams itself decreases, making it difficult to take turns.”
”Is that just a coincidence?”
This is because I can sense the location of magic stones and know the location of monsters. But if I say this, others might think I can sense the location of their magic stones as well.
Ordinary people wouldn’t want their location to be known, especially those who have something to hide. If this gets out, there’s a high chance I’ll be silenced by the latter group.
Even if I try to deceive them, it’s not like I can’t be suspected of betraying them at any moment.
In other words… this is something that needs to be kept secret.
So, I’ll just pretend it’s a coincidence and decide to absorb the magic stones before returning next time.
It’s okay if I absorb them right after collecting them, as long as I have a secure hiding spot.
So, after finishing the paperwork, it’s time to talk about the money…
”I see, the goblin is 21 and the wolf is 31… both are 1000 Oar each right now, so that’s a total of 52,000 Oar.”
”Whoa, that’s so expensive? I heard a newbie’s earnings are around 5000, though.”
”That’s because it’s divided among 4 people in a team. Normally, you’d take turns getting a share in the first district, so it wouldn’t be this much.”
”Ah, I see.”
”Plus, the value of magic stones changes depending on the season. We’ll be using various magic items to prepare for winter, so the value of magic stones consumed as fuel is a bit higher.”
It seems that magic items are used in wealthy households both within and outside the country, and their intentions influence the value of magic stones.
”I see.”
As I nodded in understanding, the receptionist leaned in again, speaking in a soft voice.
”So, what will you do? Carrying all that cash is dangerous, and it’s better to keep it here, don’t you think?”
”Ah, yeah. I’ll just deposit everything for now.”
”Everything?”
”Yes. I’ll take it out when I need it.”
”Okay. I’ll process it that way.”
I decided to deposit the whole amount since I can withdraw it anytime with my registration certificate, and there’s no handling fee.
Or rather, the guild’s membership fee already includes the handling fee.
Well, tomorrow I plan to look for used equipment, so I want to ask about the prices and good stores… but the conversation about exchanging money got too long.
With this face and style, there are probably people who have her as their favorite.
If I’m seen as flirting with the receptionist, it might cause trouble, so I’ll stop here for now.
I left the guild and headed to today’s inn.
As I made my way to the place Ms. Linna, the inn’s promoter, had told me about… I found a 2-story building that was connected to a tavern.
The sign above the store read “Horned Ox Inn”, and there was another sign with a picture of a bed and a mug or cup.
Looks like I’m in the right place.
There’s only one entrance, and the inn’s reception desk is probably inside, so I’ll just go in for now.
Three hours later… a n*ked Linna was lying in front of me.
