Chapter 52 Shopping Date (Rena)
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”…Hey, what are you doing?”
This morning, when I rushed to the place where Liz was waiting, I saw Rena being talked to by a guy.
(Huh? That guy talked to Liz too, right?)
”Ah, Hiroya! Over here!”
I hurriedly stood in front of Rena and glared at the guy.
”Are you trying to hit on such a little girl?”
”Ah… this morning──no, um…”
He became flustered the moment he saw my face.
”I’m sorry!”
He suddenly bowed his head and ran away like a rabbit.
* * *
”Rena wants to check out the Royal Library.”
We held hands and walked down the main street from the central square where the guild is, heading towards the castle.
”Can we kids even go in?”
”Yeah. Rena and the others registered as adventurers and got a ‘guild card,’ right? With that, we can use it for free.”
I said this while taking out the guild card from my apron pocket.
”That’s amazing. It’s rank B.”
”That’s rank B for my avatar. I wonder what it would be for Rena’s real self.”
”No way, it would be too much… and stop calling yourself an avatar.”
Rena chuckled at my comment.
The Royal Library was a building next to the castle walls that surrounded the royal castle inside the city walls.
When I showed my guild card at the reception, they were surprised, but we got in without any problems. After all, we didn’t look like rank B or C adventurers.
Inside the library, there were many bookshelves packed with books that reached the high ceiling.
”This is… amazing…”
”This is where the wisdom of humans gathers…”
Rena murmured. I guess it must be quite moving for her as a goddess.
”Are you looking for a specific book? I can help.”
”Um, actually, I didn’t come here to look for a book or to read one.”
Rena flipped through a nearby book.
”Huh? Then why did you come?”
”Well, I wanted to feel the ‘efforts and growth of cute children’ with my own skin, I guess?”
She put the book back on the shelf and picked up another one right next to it.
”I feel like I came to see the presentation of humans, elves, dwarves, and other ‘cute beings living in this world’ who have developed and thrived from the wisdom and a little bit of magic knowledge I first gave them. As a goddess, you know?”
Saying this, Rena looked up from the book and gazed lovingly around the library.
* * *
”By the way…”
I asked Rena while reading a book about the geography of this world that the librarian found for me.
”What’s the religion like in this world? Are there any religious organizations that believe in gods?”
Rena, who had been reading a book about the magic system, looked up at my question.
”Um… there aren’t really any big religious organizations… I think.”
She turned to face me and answered.
”Of course, different places have their own beliefs. For example, in Razia Village, the water dragon that brought blessings is worshipped as ‘Dragon God.’ That’s a good example.”
I said this while resting my chin on my hands, watching the busy librarian move around.
”There are also areas that worship mountains and big trees as gods. But there aren’t any religious organizations, you know.”
”Really? So there’s no organization that worships Rena as a goddess?”
”Yeah. The people in this world don’t know about Goddess Rena.”
Rena returned her gaze to the book. Her expression looked a bit lonely.
”Is that so?”
”I tried not to interfere too much in this world… because I tend to get too involved.”
I see. I can understand that.
(Rena doesn’t really have that ‘detached’ feeling a god should have.)
She probably gets too attached to the people on the ground. Considering her position as a god, that might not be a good thing for Rena.
While I watched Rena read with a gentle smile, I thought to myself.
”I guess… Rena might be too kind.”
”?”
Rena tilted her head slightly, glancing at me.
”Ah, never mind.”
I returned my gaze to the book.
* * *
”Well, it’s almost lunchtime. Is it okay to eat at a food stall?”
After leaving the library, we walked down the main street, holding hands.
”I heard from Liz and Martina that there’s a food stall street a little off the central square.”
Rena pulled my hand.
”Okay. I’ll leave it to you.”
In response to my answer, Rena smiled brightly and started to jog ahead.
* * *
”Wow. That looks super delicious!”
We chose something like a ‘hamburger.’ Even though it didn’t have a hamburger patty, it was a round bun filled with thick bacon, an omelet, cheese, and vegetables. Rena swallowed hard as she stared at it.
We decided to sit on a bench next to the food stall to eat.
”It was when I first had skewers with Hiroya and Kazumi.”
Rena said while taking a big bite of the hamburger-like bun.
”I was so happy. Eating with friends is so much fun.”
”Yeah.”
”…Thank you for becoming friends with me, Rena.”
Rena placed her half-eaten hamburger on her lap and whispered, a little red in the face.
”I’m the one who should be thanking you. I appreciate you bringing me to this world and watching over me. I hope we can keep this up forever.”
I said this and wiped the sauce off Rena’s mouth with my finger.
”Ah…”
”I don’t want to ruin the beauty of a pretty girl.”
I licked my finger.
”…No way…”
Rena’s face turned bright red as she watched my action.
”Ah, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to… that must have been uncomfortable…”
”No, it’s not that I mind…”
Rena shook her head while looking down. I suddenly felt shy too and took a bite of my hamburger.
* * *
”Is it time already? Next is Martina.”
After finishing our meal, we walked hand in hand toward the central square.
”That girl is really nervous since it’s her first date… so please be gentle and escort her.”
After saying that, Rena looked down and muttered, “Well, it was my first time too…”
”By the way, it’s a ‘shopping date,’ but didn’t you want to buy anything?”
”Ah… now that you mention it, I didn’t buy anything.”
Rena looks up as if she just remembered.
”Things I want… like clothes or ‘underwear’…”
Rena puts her hand on her cheek, deep in thought.
”Y-you can go shopping for those later with Liz!”
I really don’t want to go to a lingerie store. It’s too embarrassing.
”…So, whould we buy some accessories? I saw a street vendor earlier.”
The street vendor where I bought Liz an ear cuff sounds good.
”Yeah! I want to!”
Rena nods with a smile. …That smile is truly ‘goddess-level.’
* * *
The item Rena chose from the street vendor is a brooch.
It’s not expensive, and the blue stone isn’t very big, but the silver base is larger and has a delicate and beautiful design shaped like wings.
”How does it look?”
Rena sticks out the part of her left chest where the brooch is attached.
”Yeah. It looks great on you.”
”Hehe. Thank you, Hiroya.”
Saying that, Rena suddenly clings to me… and kisses my cheek.
”Ms. Rena???”
”I had so much fun today… so this is my thank you.”
Rena looks at me with a goddess-level smile.
”Yeah. I had fun too.”
I manage to reply while my heart races. I was completely caught off guard.
”Come on! Martina is waiting! You should go see her!”
After hugging me a little tighter, Rena steps back and pushes me from behind.
”Got it. I’ll go now.”
I wave back at Rena, and then I start running toward the guild again.

I’m reminded of a scene in a movie where a grade schooler pretends to drown in a public pool so the teenage lifeguard gives him mouth to mouth, grabbing her and shoving his tongue down her throat.
