Volume 1 Chapter 2 Otherworld Gate

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Alright, it’s past 9 PM. To all the students studying for exams! Take a break and relax with some radio music. Today’s special is 80s Western music!”

I’m a student too, so I try to study as much as I can at night. But this DJ is my favorite, and this time always becomes my break time.

My Akari lives next door, but when I open the window, it’s not like a romantic comedy where I can see into her room. I can’t tell what she’s doing from my room, so I decide to send her a message.

 *What are you doing?

*I’m about to take a bath! Want to join?

*You idiot (send). That’s when it happened.

Suddenly, the whole house shook like it jumped up about a meter.

I thought it was an earthquake! But the next moment, the room shook violently in all directions, and I couldn’t stay in my chair. I was thrown to the floor, and my bookshelf fell over.

In the living room, I heard a loud crash like a cabinet had fallen. The shaking stopped in about a minute, but the power went out. I grabbed my phone and used its light to head downstairs to the living room.

 ”Dad, Mom, are you okay?”

”Yeah, Yuuta. We’re fine. All the furniture fell over, though. That was a huge earthquake. I wonder where the epicenter was?”

”Oh, I had the radio on, so I’ll go get it.”

I said that and went back upstairs to get the radio. It’s a rechargeable type, so it was still working, but it wasn’t talking about the earthquake. Queen’s song was playing.

”I wonder if I need to switch to NHK or something,” I thought, but no station was mentioning the earthquake.

”Dad, something’s weird. The radio isn’t saying anything about the earthquake.”

”What? Was it such a localized shake? If the TV was on, maybe we’d know more. I’ll go check the breaker.”

 Then, I heard it.

 ”AHHHHH!”

A terrifying scream came from next door.

”That’s from the Sakura-san’s house. I wonder if someone got hurt.”

I told my worried mom, “I’ll go check,” grabbed the wooden sword we keep for security at the entrance, and hurried to Tomori’s house.

Tomori’s house was dark too. The front door was locked, and of course, the doorbell didn’t ring. I knocked hard, but there was no response. Maybe someone fainted or got hurt and couldn’t move.

I felt anxious but took a deep breath.

”Right, she said she was going to take a bath.”

Remembering that, I headed to the bathroom window at the back of the house.

I knew the layout of Tomori’s house well since I’d known it since childhood. I gently knocked on the bathroom window.

”Tomori, are you okay? It’s me, Yuuta!”

There was no answer, but I felt like something was moving inside. I couldn’t waste time thinking.

”I’m going to break the window. Watch out for the glass!”

I swung the wooden sword hard and smashed the bathroom window. It was dark, but I could see a shadow of a person moving. The window was a bit small, but I brushed off the remaining glass and climbed inside, turning on my phone’s light.

…What the heck is this? In the changing area of the bathroom, Tomori was being held from behind by one person while another was spreading her legs apart.

The ones holding her… were pigs? No, they were wearing armor, so they looked like people, but was it some kind of cosplay? Or worse, was this about to get really bad?

Just then, I heard a small pop, and I lost my cool. In the next moment, I hit those pig-people hard with my wooden sword, and they seemed to faint.

”Tomori, are you okay? What is going on?”

”Yuu-chan! Oh, thank you. But I have no idea what’s happening… I was taking a bath when the earthquake hit, then the power went out, and these pig-people appeared out of the darkness and started attacking me!”

”But still, for thieves during a disaster, they’re too ugly and too well-prepared,” I said while trying to pull off one of their masks, but it wouldn’t come off.

”Is this one of those orcs from light novels or anime?”

Tomori looked confused too, but that wasn’t the main issue right now. Is Tomori’s mom, Akari-san, safe?

 ”Tomori, what about your mom?”

As I said that and looked at Tomori, I realized she was completely n*ked.

”No, Tomori. First, put on some clothes. Then I’ll call the police. I’ll go and check on her.”

”Got it. Mom should be in the kitchen…”

Since I didn’t feel anything suspicious around, I decided to leave Light for a moment and check on Auntie in the kitchen, but it felt a bit off here too.

I’ve been practicing kendo since elementary school, and while I’m not a master, I think I’m pretty good. I believe I’m more sensitive to things than most people.

There’s a back door behind the fridge in the kitchen that leads to the backyard. It seems like there’s something going on in that direction.

I have a wooden sword with me, but if there are multiple intruders and they have hostages, I’m at a big disadvantage. It might be better to wait for the police to arrive.

As I thought about this, I checked my phone. Huh? No signal. Maybe the earthquake damaged the communication lines. If that’s the case, the police might not be able to help right away. I reconsidered and slowly moved toward the strange feeling, peeking out from the back door.

…Yep, there are a few pig-like people. And Auntie is there too. She has a gag in her mouth and can’t speak, but she seems aware.

What’s that? Even though the area is dark because of a power outage, there’s a glowing ring about 2 meters (6.56ft) wide floating about 30 centimeters (12in) above the ground.

It’s definitely not good to face that many people alone. I thought about calling Dad for help when suddenly, someone stepped out of the glowing ring.

It was a tall man in very beautiful clothes, and judging by the reaction of the pig-like people, he seems to be their leader. Plus, he has big, pointy ears sticking out. Is that what they call an elf?

I have no idea what’s going on. Did the earthquake connect us to another world?

Wait! I’ve been noticed! That elf is sharp!

In the next moment, I found myself surrounded by several pig-like people, with a spear pointed at me. Damn, I can’t fight back.

’Hmm, you’re a male human from this world. If you don’t resist, we won’t be rough with you.’

It felt like a message was echoing directly in my head instead of spoken words. I replied with words.

”What are you guys? Why are you attacking the Sakura family?”

The response came back in the same way.

’There’s no need to explain the details to you. Soon, everyone in this world will bow down to us.’

What the heck? Are these guys invading from another world?

In the end, I was tied up with Akari-san and also had a gag in my mouth.

A few minutes later, Tomori was brought in, also gagged and tied up, and dragged into the backyard.

’It seems like there are only 3 of you in this house. This will do for today. We’ll set up a barrier so you can’t find the gate and retreat. Take these two with you.’

That’s what the thought message said.

Damn, they’re scouting before an invasion, and we’re the captives… While I was thinking this, something like a metal chain was put around Tomori’s neck, and she was taken toward the gate.

Is there anything I can do? I desperately tried to think, but no good ideas came to mind.

Then, just as Tomori was about to be taken into the gate, Akari-san suddenly pulled me with great force and charged at the pig-like person holding Tomori.

Wow, this is what they call adrenaline strength. Tomori and the pig-like person were knocked away by Akari-san, and instead, Akari-san and I ended up rushing into the glowing ring.

Whoa, what is this feeling? It’s so weird. It’s like my sense of balance is completely messed up, and I can’t tell up from down. In the middle of this, I felt that thought message again.

’You fool! Jumping into the gate without a tag… well, you probably won’t survive. Quickly readjust the gate…’ After that, I couldn’t hear anything, either because I lost consciousness or the message stopped…

As my awareness faded, I saw Akari-san desperately grabbing my left wrist with her right hand.
