Volume 1 Chapter 5 Light Snow

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The next morning, I woke up in front of the cabin, and Ms. Akari was right next to me. Thank goodness. After everything, there were no enemy attacks, and it didn’t snow. The cabin was still burning, and Ms. Akari must have kept the fire going like I told her to.

I tried to get up, but my body wouldn’t move. As I struggled, Ms. Akari seemed to notice and sat up.

”Yuuta. Don’t force yourself to move. I think your wounds are mostly healed, but you have a really high fever. And, can I borrow the hatchet?”

I was still tightly holding the hatchet.

If I hadn’t had it, things would have ended badly. I’m really thankful to whoever left it for me.

About an hour later, Ms. Akari brought something and plopped it on me.

”What is this?” It smelled really fishy and was cold and wet. But maybe because I had a fever, it felt a bit nice.

”This is the skin of the beast you defeated. It’s my first time skinning an animal, but I think I did okay. If we need more, I can go get some more. And later, let’s try cooking the meat!”

The raw skin would probably rot soon, but it might be good enough for now since we lost the cabin. Plus, it’s great that we can eat the meat.

”So, Yuuta. The thing you defeated had horns and fangs, and it looks different from the mountain dogs or wolves I know. I wonder if it’s from this world.”

I wanted to see it with my own eyes, but since I couldn’t move, I decided to let it go.

At lunchtime, I finally got to eat meat again, and after that, Ms. Akari continued to work on the prey. But by the afternoon, the swelling in my left shoulder got worse, and my fever seemed to rise. I felt really cold and ended up throwing up what I had eaten earlier.

Ms. Akari was taking care of me, but without the cabin, I couldn’t help but worry about what would happen if it snowed tonight. Plus, there was no guarantee that another beast wouldn’t attack us.

”Don’t worry, Yuuta! It’s a bit smelly, but I have 5 furs, so we’ll manage tonight. I’ll stay close to you!”

Since I couldn’t move, Ms. Akari felt really reliable. Eventually, the sun went down, and we added more firewood to the cabin fire. Ms. Akari and I wrapped ourselves in the 5 animal skins and snuggled together.

Then, I woke up in the middle of the night.

I was so thirsty. My fever was still high.

I looked over at Ms. Akari to ask her to bring me some water, but something was off with her.

She looked like she was in pain and was shivering.

”Ms. Akari, what’s wrong? Are you okay?”

”Ah, sorry Yuuta. I think I’m getting a fever too. Maybe I overdid it with the skinning…”

I noticed that the cabin fire was almost out. Ms. Akari couldn’t move, and we ran out of fuel.

Damn, I can’t believe I can’t move at a time like this. What a useless guy I am!

I decided to try to stand up, but the moment I thought I was up, the ground spun around, and I collapsed. It seemed like I really had a high fever.

While I was lying there, Ms. Akari crawled closer to me, still wrapped in the animal skin.

”Don’t push yourself, Yuuta. At this point, we have to just accept that we’ll sleep here together. It’s okay, I think I’ll feel better by morning… so for now, let’s stay close and keep warm…”

Yeah, that’s the best I can do right now.

Ms. Akari is my girlfriend’s mom, but I started to feel really fond of her. I pulled her head closer to me with my moving right hand.

”It’s okay, Yuuta. When things are tough, it’s fine to lean on your mom.”

Yeah, she really is like my mom. She’s different from my girlfriend. I reminded myself to hold back from kissing Ms. Akari.

The ground and the world were still spinning, but Ms. Akari’s warmth felt nice. I wondered if this situation was hell or heaven… As I thought about it, it started to snow, and the snowfall got heavier.

(Oh no, this might be bad…)

I looked at Ms. Akari, and she was staring back at me.

”Yuuta, I’m sorry. I feel useless. But I was really happy that you stayed with me until the end. I wonder if I’ll ever see Tomori again. Oh no, I can’t stop the tears from falling.”

”Ms. Akari, you can’t give up yet. Maybe things will get better after a good night’s sleep. Let’s keep trying together until the end!”

Then, I pulled Ms. Akari close, her face all wet with tears and snot, and I said.

 ”Can I kiss you?”

Wait, what am I saying? Am I losing it because of the fever?

Ms. Akari looked surprised, but then she said.

 ”Yeah…”

Then, her face moved closer to mine, and we kissed. Maybe it was the fever or the shock of the moment, but everything started to spin, and my mind began to fade. Outside, the snow fell harder, slowly covering us both.
