Volume 1 Chapter 10 Barua

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

When Barua and the others crossed the ridge, the goblins were huddled by the riverbank. It seemed like they weren’t very good with water.

The evacuation camp was on the opposite side of the river, and the food brought by the evacuees was piled up on the riverbank. It looked like the women and children had moved deeper into the mountains, so even if they could cross the river, that food would be a trap.

”Alright, let’s push them into the river from behind!”

Just as Barua gave the order and everyone was about to rush down from the ridge, something huge came charging towards Barua from up high. In the next moment, a massive shockwave hit, sending everyone flying a few meters down.

”Is everyone okay? What the heck was that?”

As Barua got up and looked around, he saw a giant goblin, at least 3 meters tall, standing there with a massive stone hammer that was also about 3 meters long.

 ”Damn, it’s the Goblin King…”

The Goblin King is the main goblin when there’s a big goblin outbreak, kind of like a queen bee. This guy is way stronger and tougher than regular goblins, and even skilled fighters might struggle against him. Normally, he stays where the outbreak started and doesn’t move with the group, but…

Crap, thinking about it won’t help. We need to regroup.

With that in mind, Barua started giving orders.

”Everyone, keep your distance. Don’t cluster together. And while avoiding that big guy as much as possible, take out the goblins by the river!”

Following Barua’s orders, the other members went down to the riverbank and started taking out the goblins. The Goblin King tried to come down to the riverbank to join the fight, but Barua stood in his way.

 ”Hey, you’re facing me!”

* * *

Puruun was watching all of this from the forest on the opposite bank.

 ”Imenji…”

He wanted to rush in and help right away, but he could tell the enemy was way stronger than him.

Yuuta had told him not to engage unless there was no other choice against someone stronger.

His role was to deal with any stragglers, and indeed, the fighting group was battling across the river, with some goblins losing their way and heading towards his side. If he let them through, he didn’t know what would happen to Melon and Akari’s mom. He decided to leave the Goblin King to his dad and focus on taking out the stragglers crossing the river. With that resolve, Puruun charged towards the riverbank.

 ”Hey, big sister!”

Melon tried to run out, but Akari pulled her close.

”No, MelMel. If we go, we’ll just get in the way. Let’s trust and wait.”

Even as she said that, Akari was really worried about what happened to Yuuta. Fortunately, it seemed like Puruun was handling the goblins crossing the river without any trouble. But what about Barua…?

”Wait! Mr. Barua, there are 3 more behind you!”

Akari shouted, but her voice didn’t reach Barua. In the next moment, Barua was pinned down by the goblins from behind, and without hesitation, the Goblin King swung down his stone hammer.

”No──! How can you hit your own guys──.”

Akari screamed. Puruun noticed that too.

 ”Imenji!”

Puruun shouted as he crossed the river, slicing through the goblins coming at him. He finally reached Barua, but his beloved dad wasn’t breathing.

”No! Imenji! Don’t leave us behind!”

It looked like the goblins by the river were mostly taken care of, and Okia and the others were surrounding Barua and Puruun to protect them.

”Everyone, I will definitely protect Puruun. I can’t face Barua if I don’t!”

Okia’s words made everyone respond with “Yeah!” But they were all pretty beaten up and weren’t sure if they had the strength to dodge another hit from the Goblin King.

The Goblin King raised his stone hammer and charged towards Okia.

 ”Damn it! I’ll hold on!”

Just as Okia got ready with his sword, a dark shadow jumped out from the side and struck the Goblin King’s Achilles tendon.

 ”Yuuta!” Puruun shouted.

”Sorry, Puruun. I’m late. Is Barua okay?”

”No, he’s not breathing. Dad, he’s not breathing!”

”Calm down, Puruun. We’ll handle this big guy. Okiya and the others, step back and start healing!”

 ”Okay, got it…”

On the other side, Akari was jumping with excitement.

”Yay! The hero is here! Yuuta, I’m so glad you’re okay! And don’t let that big thing get you!”

 ”Mama Akari, what’s a hero?”

”Well, MelMel, a hero is… um, a good guy?”

”?” It seemed like Melon didn’t really understand.

The Goblin King had one of its Achilles tendons cut, and it was clearly moving slower.

Yuuta and Sodon were surrounding it.

 ”Sodon, is this the boss?”

”Yeah, Yuuta. That’s the Goblin King. The one who created this whole group.”

 ”Got it!”

Saying that, Yuuta moved to the side of the Goblin King and aimed his sword at the other Achilles tendon. But this time, there was a loud “clang,” and the sword got stuck in its leg.

”Damn, it’s so tough. No, I just hit it at the wrong angle… My arm isn’t good enough.”

The Achilles tendon didn’t get cut, but the impact made the Goblin King lose its balance and crouch forward.

In the next moment, Yuuta grabbed the second sword he had on his back and struck hard at the back of the Goblin King’s neck.

There was a loud pop, and the Goblin King’s head cleanly separated from its body.

”Wow, that was a perfect hit…” But even though it was a monster, cutting off its head didn’t feel good at all.

”I did it, Yuuta!” Sodon and the others ran over.

While dodging their cheers, Yuuta ran to Puruun.

 ”Imenji, Imenji…”

Puruun kept calling for her dad.

Yuuta looked at Okiya, but he shook his head.

Oh… a wave of feelings he couldn’t put into words hit him. Losing a family member feels like this.

Yuuta quietly moved closer to Puruun and hugged her tightly.

On the other side, Akari, holding Melon, was also crying loudly.
