Volume 1 Chapter 14 Waiting for Spring

During the winter, I often went hunting with Okia. When we first arrived in this world, there were no signs of animals in the forest, but now we can catch all kinds of prey. Okia said that the War Wolves probably scared the animals deep into the mountains back then.
Well, my hunting skills were pretty much non-existent back then, and I probably didn’t know how to find them either.
Ms. Akari and Puruun work at the village dyeing workshop. It’s a luxury for the villagers, but they raise silkworms to make silk-like fabric, dye it with the village’s unique patterns, and sell it to the Tax Collector. Of course, that fabric will go with us to royal capital.
Because of this, Melon has been doing a lot of the housework.
After that, there’s no physical relationship with Ms. Akari. I think about asking her, but there’s something holding me back. I feel like Ms. Akari feels the same way, and we probably need a little push to spark something between us.
So, the 4 of us are working together to save money, and according to Puruun, we’re doing pretty well.
Soon, the snow on the mountains started to melt, and the village was feeling more like spring. In about a month, the Tax Collector from the border will come to our village. Puruun and I started getting ready to leave for royal capital. Of course, I didn’t forget my sword training, and Puruun has really gotten strong. There aren’t many guys in the village who can match her now.
…I’m still okay, though.
”I’m definitely taking this necklace with me. It’s something special that Yuuta bought for me.”
Puruun said while packing her things. Oh, that one blessed by the spirit. When she wears it, she seems to move about 30% faster. I haven’t seen her take damage, so I don’t know for sure, but it probably boosts her defense too.
But I really hope she doesn’t wear it to bed. Maybe because of the charm, Puruun looks really cute and tempting, and I might accidentally hug her. When that happens, I just turn my body away and face Ms. Akari while I sleep. But sometimes, I almost reach out to Ms. Akari too…
Girls seem to have a lot to prepare, like clothes and makeup, but I don’t have much stuff, so I only need to pack a change of clothes and my weapons. While I was organizing my things, I found the smartphone and coin pouch I had when I came to this world. The battery is long dead, and I thought it was useless, so I tossed it aside, but Puruun was looking at it with interest.
”What’s that? Do you want it? But it doesn’t work.”
”What is it?”
”The square thing is a tool from my world called a smartphone. It’s hard to explain. You can talk to people far away, keep pictures of people you like, and listen to music. The other one is my world’s currency.”
”Pictures? That’s amazing! You can talk to people far away? Is it like the elves’ telepathy? And this money looks really pretty with all the different kinds.”
”It’s a bit different from telepathy… If we could use that here, we could talk directly between royal capital and the village. Also, that money can’t be used here. If you want it, I can give it to you.”
”Wow. But it’s Yuuta’s, and if it doesn’t work, I don’t need it. But it’s so rare, it might sell in royal capital. Oh! Can I take this holey coin? It would be a nice accent for my necklace.”
”That makes sense; it might come in handy, but since it’s not too much to carry, I’ll keep it. Oh, and you can have that five-yen coin.”
”Five-yen coin?”
”Yep. It’s a coin that connects people!”
”Really? Then please help connect me and Yuuta too, five-yen coin!”
Haha… Speaking of which, I still haven’t told Melon about pairing up with Puruun.
”Hey, Puruun.”
”What?”
”You didn’t tell Melon that I’m pairing up with you to go to royal capital, did you?”
”Eh? W-What? Why are you asking me that all of a sudden?”
I could see her ears turning bright red.
”Yeah, Melon said that. And if that’s the case, then you and I can go to royal capital…”
”Ah, that guy… said to keep it a secret… Oh, no, um, that’s just a way to convince Melon! So, can you help me keep it quiet until we leave?”
”Sure, as long as you don’t mind.”
”Yeah, yeah! I don’t mind! I don’t mind!”
”I see… but my partner is Ms. Akari, you know. Is it okay to give Melon a weird misunderstanding?”
”Huh? A weird misunderstanding? It’s not strange to have 2 females as partners, right?”
”Oh!”
That reminds me. A soldier from the Defense Force said that beastfolk can have multiple wives. So, having more than one female doesn’t go against their morals.
”But let me check just to be sure. We’re just pretending in front of Melon, right?”
”Uh, well… um… sorry, Yuuta. To be honest, I like you.”
”Ah… th-thank you… but I’m not beastfolk.”
”That does bother me a bit, but I don’t think it’s that important right now. When we talk like this, I have fun being with you, and I want to keep living together.”
As she said this, Puruun was blushing and fidgeting in front of me.
(Okay, listen. Beastfolk go into heat in spring! If a female is fidgeting in front of you during that time, it means she’s interested, so you should go for it. Hahaha!)
But wait! No, that’s not right! Puruun is my precious little sister.
I know it’s my human morals, but still, that’s not okay.
Puruun is staring at me with teary eyes. Oh no, oh no. I need to stay calm. When I looked at Puruun’s chest, wait, she’s wearing a necklace now. She was just holding a 5-yen coin earlier.
”Wait, wait, Puruun. That’s not fair. Take off that necklace first!”
”Ah, you caught me.”
Saying that, Puruun took off the charm necklace.
”Hehe. But Yuuta, I have to admit, I was being sneaky, but I’m serious. I heard from Mama Akari that humans aren’t like elves and don’t have multiple wives. But for us beastfolk, it doesn’t really matter, and Mama Akari is cheering me on.”
Wow. So what Ms. Akari said back then was serious.
If I had the chance to return, I’d want to be with Tomori; otherwise, I’d want to be with Puruun…
So Ms. Akari is okay with just a temporary physical relationship with me? That’s a bit frustrating. Plus, we haven’t gone all the way yet. While I was thinking about that, someone came to the door, and when I checked, it was Sodon.
”Yuuta. I have a message from the Village Head. A fast horse came, and the Tax Collector will be here in a week. It’s finally happening. And PurPur is coming too? She’s really becoming a beautiful woman lately. I’m so jealous.”
”Wait a minute, no way! Puruun is my little sister! Besides, you were talking about EllEll the other day.”
”Haha, that girl is out of your league. Well, I just wanted to let you know.”
Sodon said that and went home.
”What about Ellulu?”
Puruun came out saying that.
”No, it’s not me. Sodon seems to be interested in her.”
”Well, Ellulu is Miss Tokura Village, after all. But I don’t think Sodon stands a chance.”
Ellulu is a beastfolk girl about my age and is the most beautiful in the village, super popular with the young males. She should be close with Puruun too.
”Ellulu seems to be interested in you, Yuuta. She said human guys have way bigger… you know, than beastfolk!”
”Wha, you guys are talking about that? No way, I haven’t shown her anything!”
”Haha, it’s okay. Just because they’re interested doesn’t mean they’ll really go for it. You know, conversations between girls our age can get pretty intense!”
Sigh. I wonder if I’ll keep getting teased by Puruun like this. I’m starting to feel a bit nervous about going to royal capital. But, it’s only one more week. Just thinking about finally making a move makes me feel all excited.
