Volume 1 Chapter 25 Imperial Guard

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 The new year started, and Puruun was moved from the Military Training Camp to the Imperial Guard Division.

 The Imperial Guard Division and the members’ dorms were on the Royal Palace grounds, so Yuuta couldn’t come in.

 Since that incident, Puruun hadn’t seen Yuuta.

 At first, she felt really sad and frustrated, crying a lot at night under her blanket.

 It wasn’t Yuuta’s fault, and it wasn’t her fault either.

 But there was a clear wall between them because they were different kinds of beings.

 The despair of realizing that the person she liked could never be with her weighed heavily on Puruun.

 But after crying for a while, she calmed down and remembered when Mama Akari had encouraged her in the past.

* * *

 ”Yeah, I like Yuuta. But can Beastfolk and humans really be together and have kids?”

 ”Hmm, I don’t really know, but I think being together isn’t just about having kids. In my old world, there were many people who lived together as partners, respecting each other, even if they couldn’t have kids…”

 ”Oh, I see…”

* * *

 Maybe she wouldn’t be able to connect with Yuuta anymore or have kids. But still, she really liked Yuuta. She wanted to be with him because it was fun. She wanted to keep that feeling close to her. Plus, if she thought about it, even without going all the way, it was still possible to have a release inside, right?

 Thinking that way made the idea of whether or not his p**is could go all the way inside seem like a small issue.

 Also, she had bled a lot, so she was pretty sure she had lost her virginity.

 With her feelings sorted out, Puruun approached the gates of the Imperial Guard Division with a fresh mindset.

* * *

 The Imperial Guard Division was made up of several male and female squads, but at first, Puruun didn’t belong to a specific squad and had to go through strict training on manners. The guards also had to pay attention to their appearance and behavior, as scandals were not allowed.

 After about a month of training, Puruun was assigned to the Fourth Princess’s squad.

 Puruun was placed in a squad of Beastfolk women, mostly from the outskirts. Honestly, she thought the Imperial Guard would be made up of nobles or rich young men, but when she asked a senior in her squad, she learned that they were really there to protect important people as a last line of defense in emergencies.

 That made sense to her.

 Basically, they were like pawns in a game.

 But if there wasn’t an emergency, it wouldn’t be a big deal.

 In the dorm, Puruun shared a room with a girl named Kurus, who was a squirrel-type Beastfolk and a bit older than her. It seemed like she had joined about a year earlier.

 Kurus was from a village in the outskirts that Puruun had never heard of, but that was the same for Puruun too. No one in the Royal Capital knew about Tokura Village.

 Kurus was pretty friendly and asked a lot of questions.

 ”Oh, you have a boyfriend. Wow. But you should keep that a secret here.”

 ”Is it because scandals are a big no-no?”

 ”No, it’s not that. Your situation isn’t a scandal. The guards don’t get to be with men… What’s scary is jealousy! That’s the real issue.”

 ”Jealousy, huh?”

 ”Yeah. This is a place for women. There are no chances to meet men in the Royal Palace… Unless you get to be close to the male royalty, there might be a chance, but everyone is feeling frustrated. Some even end up going for girls.”

 ”Girls?”

 ”Oh, don’t worry. I’m not into that.”

 ”So, senior, do we actually get to guard the princess?”

 ”Ah, it’s fine with Kurus, Ms. Puruun. You don’t need to worry about that yet. I haven’t even met Lady Asuka, the Fourth Princess.”

 ”Senior… Ms Kurus. So, what about our job…”

 ”The princess has her own guards from the nobility taking care of her. Our main job is just cleaning the garden and the rooms until something happens.”

 Ah, speaking of guards, it sounds fancy, but it seems really boring, right?

 …I wonder what Yuuta is doing right now…

 Thinking that, Puruun looked up at the night sky through the window.

* * *

 I hurt Puruun in such a bad way.

 Well, I could say it was unexpected, but I kept thinking that if I had been more careful and considerate, I wouldn’t have hurt her like that. I felt guilty about it all the time.

 I haven’t seen Puruun since then. The new year started, and she moved to the Imperial Guard Division, so I couldn’t even contact her.

 I thought about checking if there was a message board at the Royal Palace, but as soon as I got close, the guards questioned me and sent me away. Since I was just a regular person, if I didn’t have military ID, I could have been thrown in jail right away.

 So, while feeling anxious, I tried to keep my grades up to either pass or fail by spring… No, to be honest, I was studying really hard to just barely pass.

 About a month after the new year, I got a call from Ms. Humari from the merchant guild, so I went to the guild on my next training day.

 ”How’s it going? Are you collecting the credits you need?”

 Ms. Humari asked me.

 ”Haha, it’s pretty close, but I’ll do my best…”

 ”Haha, it can’t be helped. Now, about that thing. It’s about your future, and the plan is set.”

 ”Eh, so what should I do?”

 ”Well, first, you must pass the regular military recruitment!”

 ”But if I do that, I might get assigned to a faraway place…”

 ”I can’t say much about that right now, but once you’re assigned, just mess up really badly or cause a scandal… anything will do, just get kicked out of the military. That way, the village won’t be troubled.”

 ”No way, that’s too reckless! And what will happen to me after that? Am I supposed to be a servant for Puruun in the Royal Capital?”

 ”Hahaha, that could work! If you’re a guard, you might earn a good amount… Just kidding, just kidding. I can’t say much about that yet, but if you agree to this now, it will make things easier for me.”

 ”Ugh…”

 I felt like there was something hidden behind her words, but I didn’t have many choices right now. I had to trust the merchant guild. Worst case, they might hire me to clean their garden or something.

 Thinking that, I showed Ms. Humari that I agreed.

 I thought about telling Puruun about this, so I started to write a letter to leave with the merchant guild, but Ms. Humari stopped me. It seems that any details of this plan getting to the Royal Palace is a no-go.

 Well, that makes sense. It would be like betraying the military, and my letter could be checked in the Royal Palace. I gave up on telling Puruun through a letter and decided to wait for her to contact me.

 Then, probably studying harder than for my university entrance exams, I managed to gather all the credits I needed for regular military recruitment, just barely making the deadline.

 All the members from my dorm when I joined had already been assigned to their units before me.

 A few days later, my assignment was decided.

 Wow, it looks like I’m being sent to the Defense Force in Ilman’s town.

 Not a regular assignment, but a temporary one? I didn’t know that was a thing.

 Usually, in noble lands, the local lord organizes their own military and hires people from the area. But I heard that since last year, an infectious disease has been spreading a lot, and many workers are gone. So, the lord asked the royal family for military support.

 I was a bit relieved since it’s not a completely unknown town, but it’s also a place with a history for me and Puruun.

 I still haven’t heard anything from Puruun. Even when I sent a letter through the merchant guild to the Royal Palace, there was no reply. According to Huma, everything might be on hold for now because they’re checking up on me.

 But maybe it’s just that I’ve been ignored.

 The infectious disease is a bit worrying, but I can’t complain too much. It’s a 2-week trip from the Royal Capital. It’s not that far, really. Still, I need to make sure I don’t mess up and get kicked out of the military. Plus, I have to hurry because Ms. Akari and Melon are coming to the capital in about 5 months. I need to at least find them a place to stay before they arrive.

 Man, it’s frustrating not being able to talk to Puruun. Even if she doesn’t like me anymore, it’s about Melon too, so I need to start doing something soon…

 Feeling a bit anxious, I looked up at the night sky, thinking about Puruun.
