Volume 1 Chapter 15

The maid bent down and touched the body. Just that simple action made the body vanish without a trace.
”That’s teleportation magic. Looks like it was tossed off a mountain summit. Probably a snack for a dragon.”
Kashiro explained.
Having demons handle the bodies like this is quite resourceful. It seems like this isn’t the first time she’s killed someone.
”You’re pretty skilled at this.”
”I’m honored by your compliment.”
The maid exaggeratedly curtsied.
But her confident attitude only lasted so long. She suddenly went limp, like a puppet with its strings cut, and collapsed to the ground.
”It’s because of Nagaichi’s magic. She seemed weakened by the miasma.”
So she didn’t have much time left. Was she planning to kill Nagaichi before she died?
”What happened between the two of them?”
”According to Nagaichi──’This is a good chance to try magic on someone other than the class. If it works, I might be able to make this woman mine’.”
”So, Nagaichi was the one who attacked first.”
It’s no wonder she was angry. Even if she didn’t know, I felt bad for the maid. If I had known it would end up like this, I should have just brought Kashiro along from the start.
”Are you going to help her?”
After buying a healing potion, the class rep, who had been watching with her arms crossed, spoke up.
”I interrupted, after all. Plus, she’s not someone we can just leave alone.”
She’s not just any classmate. If she’s a native, she could be a valuable source of information. With her silver hair and maid outfit, she doesn’t seem like a teleportation user, so it would be a waste to let her die like this.
I pulled out a map from my small backpack and looked for a safe place to rest.
In this maid’s case, taking her back to the base is risky. She could escape with teleportation magic at any moment, and depending on the situation, she might not hesitate to kill. It’s better to stay cautious.
* * *
I picked up the maid and made my way to the entrance of the cave.
In a cave of decent size, it clearly feels like there’s something deeper inside. Maybe I should check it out after this is all over.
While Kashiro was setting up a campfire with his magic, the Maid woke up.
”No restraints? That’s quite a soft approach.”
She slowly sat up, checking her own condition. There was no immediate vibe of hostility.
”I have something I want to ask. That’s why I helped you.”
”Oh? Do you really need to hear it from my mouth?”
The Maid glanced at Kashiro. Did she figure out her abilities after she revealed the teleportation magic? She might know more about magic than we do.
”I’m Hyakudou Koushi. That over there is Kashiro Sentou, and the one posing coolly against the wall is the class rep.”
”I’m Tsukisumi Haruka. Do you remember my name properly?”
After a light self-introduction, the Maid responded.
”I’m Hiiragi Tsubaki. If I say I’m a survivor from the last trial… does that make it clear?”
No way, she’s from the same place.
With her pale skin, silver hair, and red eyes, plus that maid outfit, I totally thought she was from another world.
”What’s with that maid outfit?”
”It’s a trophy. On this island, when you defeat strong demonkind, you can get magic gear. Also, some people receive them from Godborn before coming to the island… if you take those, life on the island gets a lot better.”
According to her, her hair color and eye color changed because of the magic gear. I wonder what she looked like before; I wish there were photos or something.
”Are there any other survivors besides you, Ms. Hiiragi?”
When Kashiro asked, the Maid (just a regular woman in a maid outfit) answered casually.
”No, it’s just me. Everyone in the classroom back then got caught up in it too… almost all of them were wiped out.”
So if it was Class teleportation last time… that means about 30 people died. There might have been more in the previous times, so the number of victims could be higher than I thought.
”Well, I killed about a third of them, though.”
She says it so casually. No wonder she’s used to killing people.
”Were there any reasons for that?”
The class rep asked in a low voice, sounding cautious. The Maid answered smoothly, not seeming to care much.
”When we were there, the boys and girls clashed head-on. In the end, it turned into a brutal fight. There might be more people killed by humans than by Demonkind.”
That’s the worst-case scenario. Even in this situation, they can’t cooperate? Prioritizing their own desires too much, for crying out loud.
”How long has it been since you came to this Island?”
”Well… I don’t know the exact number of days, but it’s probably been about 4 months.”
Wow, 4 months…
”You’ve managed to survive that long.”
”Living here makes it feel like home. Once you get used to it, the Demonkind start to look cute. They don’t have intelligence, so they don’t do anything special.”
Thanks to teleportation magic, we can escape even in dangerous situations. It’s not entirely impossible.
”Wait, so even after all this time, you haven’t cleared it? Isn’t the goal to defeat the Dragon?”
”No, we cleared it. Three of us, including me, passed the Trial.”
”…Then why are you still on this Island?”
”Because I chose to live on this Island myself.”
I can’t believe she’s in her right mind. What could make someone want to live on an Island like this?
The Maid gazed at the campfire created by Kashiro, speaking eloquently.
”I’m thinking. If even the mindless Demonkind is this strong, the real ones must be even more out of control. Even after the Trial is over, we’ll just end up fighting Demonkind in the real Another World. If it’s just going to be the same hell, wouldn’t it be better to live here?”
Hmm. In short.
”You were scared to go to Another World.”
The Maid smiled faintly.
”You say it straight. But that’s right. The two who cleared it with me were a couple, and I felt left out. Plus… those 2 were good people, but they weren’t very helpful… Thinking that if I went to Another World with them, I’d just die, I couldn’t move my legs.”
You’re a badass who cleared the Trial, right? Were you really that weak?
Or maybe this Maid is just too strong. Even in a weakened state from the Miasma, she was still moving quite well. I’d like to see how strong she really is when she’s at her best.
”But you don’t look happy right now.”
Kashiro pointed it out, sensing something.
”That’s true. I just chose by process of elimination.”
”You didn’t think you could be saved from the Miasma… you probably gave up thinking, ‘Finally, it’s over,’ right?”
Hearing Kashiro’s words, the Maid smiled. It was a smile that felt like a wall, as if she was hiding her true feelings.
”If I had no hope of being saved, I wouldn’t collapse in front of you. Actually, I was hoping just a little. If there was someone who could use healing Magic, they might have helped me.”
Leaving your life and death in the hands of others is a pretty desperate move, I think.
”…I feel bad saying this after being such a nuisance, but could you help us? We want to clear the Trial quickly and get out of the Demonkind’s Island. I promise it won’t be a loss for you.”
The Maid’s red eyes locked onto mine.
Then she disappeared with teleportation Magic, so I thought the recruitment had failed…
”I’m getting a bit tired of This Island too, so it might be just the right time. Since you’ve taken care of me… at least until I can repay that favor, I’ll work my butt off.”
The maid seems to have gone to get my Halberd and quickly returned.
Welcome back, my 1200 points.
