Baseka V1c17

Volume 1 Chapter 17

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Right after taking down the Golem, we headed back to the Base.

Before resting our bodies, we should take care of what we need to do.

I listened to Kashiro explain the analysis of the magic tools and had a few questions. After that, I chatted with the Maid about our plans moving forward. Once the conversation wrapped up, I went through the loot we got from this exploration and checked the Point History while spending some time with Mayuki. Since I found out we had enough points, I asked everyone if they needed anything and checked the condition of the items we bought.

Then, I went to my room and started working out.

”How about taking a little break?”

The class rep walked in and looked at me with a bit of disbelief.

”It’s part of my routine. If I don’t do it, I feel restless.”

”This isn’t just about working out. Hyakudou, you’ve been moving non-stop, right?”

 ”Was I?”

Going back and forth between the Base and the Island messes with my sense of time. I can’t really tell how many hours it’s been since I last slept, and when I get tired, I just end up sleeping, which makes it easy to become lazy. In fact, Mayuki has fallen asleep multiple times, and I doubt she can go back to a regular routine now.

”I don’t think you need to rush while you’re at the Base. It’s great that you’re active, but I don’t want to put too much pressure on you.”

”That’s a bit over the top. I’m not that serious of a person. I just want to finish things quickly while I remember them.”

Seeing a long list of tasks in my planner makes me uneasy. I feel more at ease once everything is sorted out, and then I can relax properly.

”Watching you reminds me of my old boss at my part-time job. She was a reliable adult woman, but she always seemed busy, and I worried about her.”

”Oh really? What kind of part-time job did you have?”

 ”In a café.”

Oh, I would have loved to see the class rep in a café uniform. She would probably handle it effortlessly and look great in that calm atmosphere.

”Is Hyakudou still doing physical work? Like moving jobs or something?”

”Huh? I grew up in a rich family, you know. I’ve never had a part-time job. I just played games at home all the time.”

I never had to worry about money, and my kind big sister bought me all sorts of things. I was pretty spoiled growing up. The only thing that was tough was the physical training, which was as strict as military life.

”You probably can’t play games here, and you might not have any time to relax.”

”Not really. If I were alone, I might have broken down, but the class reps are here to talk to me.”

That said, not being able to play games is tough. The feeling of despair washes over me when I think I might never play again. All the data I’ve cherished and nurtured is now wasted. Damn Goddess, I will never forgive you.

”Is that so? I’m a bit stressed. But, this isn’t the time to be saying that, and I was thinking of holding back…”

The class rep seems like she wants to say something.

”What do you want? I’ve troubled the class rep, so just tell me, and I’ll get you anything.”

”Um, I want you to listen without misunderstanding…”

 ”Yeah.”

”This isn’t really my hobby; it’s more like a habit instilled by my useless mother…”

 ”Got it.”

What a crazy excuse. What kind of messed-up thing are they asking for?

 ”…Alcohol and cigarettes.”

 ”…Huh?”

”So, alcohol and cigarettes. I particularly like whiskey, and the brand of cigarettes is…”

I was planning to stay calm no matter what she said, and I didn’t want to look at her with prejudice, but… I have to say this.

”What’s up, class rep? That’s not something a model student should say.”

”I never claimed to be a model student.”

I sometimes thought she had a strangely manly side, and maybe that’s the class rep’s true nature.

”I’ve never smoked, but is it good?”

”Not really… I told you earlier, right? It’s not a hobby, it’s a habit. When I take it in, my mind calms down and I feel sharp.”

 Maybe she’s a heavy smoker…?

”Looks like we need a smoking area.”

”No, that’s fine. When I smoke, I just teleport to the beach. I can’t let the base smell like that; a good student like me can’t do that.”

”Is that really a good idea in a place where we might get attacked by Demonkind? It wouldn’t be relaxing, and I’d rather not take unnecessary risks. It would make me worry.”

I wouldn’t want the class rep to get killed over something like this, so I set up a smoking area next to my room.

”It’s a hassle to have to pass through my room every time, I know. But if it’s here, we can just say I’m the one smoking, so bear with it.”

”No, I can’t let you go that far…”

”You told me this when we were alone because it’s hard to say to others, right? Just rely on me a little this time. I wouldn’t feel bad being relied on by a beautiful girl.”

The class rep smiled wryly and politely bowed her head.

”Thank you. I owe you one now.”

Somehow, it still felt like there was a distance in her words.

”If you keep worrying about debts over little things like this, it’ll never end. Living together will bring up endless complaints and requests, so you don’t have to worry about it that much. I’ll probably be a bother to you plenty of times too.”

Saying this might help me get forgiven if I ever freaked out the class rep. It’s important to set up a safety net in advance.

”…Hyakudou is actually a pretty good person, huh?”

”I’m trying to be a gentleman, you know.”

”I think you’d benefit from being a bit more greedy. For example, asking for my body as a trade-off.”

She glanced at me, as if testing my reaction. What kind of thing is she saying to a self-proclaimed gentleman? After all that, I was feeling a bit guilty, but now the beast is coming back.

”Even if I take advantage of a weakness for my own gain, it can easily break the trust between us. I’m not just a monkey driven by lust; I prioritize long-term benefits.”

”That’s quite a statement. I thought all guys were just beasts.”

”I don’t think you’re wrong. I ended up getting involved too. In the end, I’m just a fake gentleman.”

Since I came to the island, the guys I’ve met have mostly been like lustful monkeys. The guy Ashihara, who has a grudge against me, was different, but the other 2 were no good.

But those 2 are exceptions among exceptions. It’s not an exaggeration to say they were the two most lustful monkeys in class.

There are real handsome gentlemen, not just fake ones like me, and my friends are good guys too.

There’s one problem child among the girls, like the Princess of the Otaku club, but she’s not stupid. She wouldn’t act foolishly and prioritize her desires in a life-or-death situation… I hope.

”Speaking of the Trial, things have been going pretty smoothly so far, and if we can cooperate with the class, we should be able to clear it easily, right?”

There are quite a few reliable folks, and what’s more, even the Maid, who cleared it last time, is helping us out. We just need to take down the 3: “Ghost Knight,” “Succubus,” and “Dragon.”

”The Succubus’s ability seems troublesome, though. Ms. Hiiragi said she can control humans with her charm magic. We might end up having conflicts among ourselves.”

Charm magic is a different kind of cheat compared to the ogre’s magic resistance. Even if we know the ability, we don’t know how to deal with it. It seems to affect not just guys but also girls, and the Maid said, “We might have to look for magic tools to defend against mental attacks.”

But… even if we find them, it might take months to gather enough for everyone. The demon kind we defeated seems to respawn in about 2 weeks, which means we can’t get the same magic tools until 2 weeks have passed.

While we’re waiting for the demonkind to respawn, it looks like the damage from the Succubus will keep increasing, and if it takes too long, that could become a hassle in itself.

”At least Yodomizu is on standby. If someone with strong abilities gets controlled, it would be a disaster. If instant death magic works, I might take a gamble.”

”Whether it works or not is a gamble in itself. I think we should plan carefully. There might be someone among our classmates with compatible magic, so we can put this off for now.”

So, the immediate target is the Ghost Knight. This guy has some ridiculous cheat ability like physical attack resistance, which is annoying. I can’t do anything since I don’t have any attack magic.

Well, the ogre’s battle axe has magic resistance, so I can at least act as a decoy… but I’m not good at magic battles.

”Well, let’s take our time to think. We have plenty of time.”

Was I frowning? The class rep lightly touched my forehead.

Then, she waved her hand and walked into the smoking area.

That delinquent class rep. She’s kind of cool, isn’t she?
