Volume 1 Chapter 31
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I was lying in Mayuki’s room, reading a collection of myths. With milk and snacks ready, it felt super relaxed and chill. I really felt like I was finally getting some good rest.
Mayuki was sitting on the floor, sipping her milk slowly. She doesn’t really like juice. More like, she probably drinks milk because I often have protein milk.
”Is it interesting?”
”I can read it.”
The Demonkind, who are both evil and fight among themselves, and the Godborns from another world have been fighting each other as well. Gods are treated like they’re amazing, but honestly, there seem to be a lot of useless ones. If you look at them through human laws, they’d be in jail right away.
”Koushi, you’re pretty twisted, huh?”
”Yeah, I know.”
”I like that about you.”
Without any hesitation, Mayuki always makes her feelings clear.
”What do you dislike about me?”
After thinking for a bit, Mayuki answered.
”Like when you leave me behind if I’m sleeping, or when you don’t take me along if our Magic doesn’t match.”
I didn’t know she cared about that stuff. For Mayuki, she looks like a delicate lady, but inside, she’s pretty rough around the edges. I thought she was just sleeping without a care. Sometimes, she shows this delicate side that matches her looks.
”Sorry. I’m the type that focuses on efficiency.”
Ignoring my joke, Mayuki looked me straight in the eyes.
”I know you worry about me, but I want you to rely on me more. If you have worries, I want you to talk to me.”
Mayuki… I didn’t know she was such a caring childhood friend. I almost felt moved, which is unusual for me.
”I’m probably stronger than you, Koushi.”
This is the thing. If she didn’t have that oddly confident attitude, the mood would’ve been perfect.
”Honestly, Mayuki’s ice Magic is strong. Takaizumi couldn’t do anything against it.”
”I think he’s just weak. A Hero being controlled by a Succubus is a lifetime of shame.”
”Looks like he got controlled when he dropped the Holy Sword.”
”Do people really make such mistakes?”
Takaizumi is really strict. Still holding a grudge, huh?
”Well, I can’t say it’s not my problem either. It’s possible to get hit by Magic when you drop the Battle Axe.”
”But Koushi has a blessing.”
You mean the blessing from big sister. While she’s revealed her existence to me, I haven’t shared anything she gave me. I’m unsure if it’s okay to spread the word that she’s Godborn.
”The blessing from Godborn really helps.”
”Ms. Kashiro said her ‘Analysis Magic’ can’t see the blessing.”
”Is that so? Now that you mention it, she did seem like that.”
”Maybe it can’t interfere with higher powers. Hero’s Magic can’t match Godborn’s power.”
”That sounds about right. As expected from someone who calls themselves a genius.”
”Hehe.”
One thing I’m curious about… What about ‘Base Magic’? How does ‘Eros Magic’ fit in? Is it classified as Hero’s Magic? Or is it considered Godborn’s power since it was gained through big sister’s blessing? After all, ‘Base Magic’ originally came from the Goddess of Order. If that’s treated as Hero’s Magic, then ‘Eros Magic’ might be similar. Plus, since Kashiro could sense ‘Eros Magic’, it’s probably something different from the blessing. Still…
I want to test it out with Godborn once.
”You have a bad look on your face.”
”Just call it curiosity.”
I just want to know the truth. I’m driven by intellectual curiosity, not lust. Please don’t misunderstand.
”Is the blessing’s effect range mental and status ailments?”
”Maybe. When I tested it, it also canceled out Yodomizu’s dark Magic, so I think the range is pretty wide.”
”But my Ice Magic and Class Rep’s Thunder Magic didn’t work.”
”It feels like pure attack Magic can’t be blocked. It’s like I’m being told, ‘You should handle the Magic you can block yourself’.”
Wide-range Magic doesn’t match well, but when Tsurué attacked, I managed to escape by teleporting to the Base space. The most dangerous are the fast-acting attack Magic. Like Thunder speed, or Ice Magic that can freeze you in an instant if you’re close… I’m really glad Class Rep and Mayuki aren’t the enemies.
”In Koushi’s case, Dragons seem to be a bad match.”
”Is that just for me? Anyway, instant death Magic probably won’t work either, so there’s no one who matches well.”
As I was rambling on, Mayuki suddenly apologizes.
”Sorry.”
Mayuki’s words always come out of nowhere. There’s no time to prepare my heart.
She probably sensed it from the start. She knew why I came to her room. She must have thrown me a lifeline since I couldn’t find the right moment to speak.
”Why are you apologizing to me?”
”If Koushi forgives me, it doesn’t make sense for me to be angry.”
”I was happy. It felt like you were getting angry for me.”
Mayuki shouldn’t be apologizing. I feel bad for Takaizumi and the others, but I never thought of blaming her even a little.
”But you wanted those people to cooperate peacefully, right? I messed that up.”
”Once they were being controlled, it would have been fine to kill them. No… that’s not it.”
I don’t want to say this to Mayuki. I don’t want her to worry about something like this.
”I feel bad for them, but if I were in the opposite position… if Mayuki was targeted, I wouldn’t hesitate to kill. So I really don’t care. Please don’t feel guilty.”
I want to wrap this up quickly.
”But well, it might be good to apologize to Mizui. She wasn’t trying to take my life. It’s not fair to lump all 4 of them together.”
”Yeah. Got it… but you’re really nice to Mizui.”
”Listen, Mayuki. I really want you to take this seriously… You dream of luxury cars, right? This is what this is about.”
I feel like Mayuki’s expression is getting colder.
”Which is more important, your long-time car or a new one?”
”Of course, my car.”
”Hmm.”
”When you compare them, it’s not about which one is worse. When you see a luxury car, you think it looks good, right? That’s all there is to it.”
”You want to ride in Mizui’s car, huh?”
”It would be a lie to say I don’t want to. I can’t deny that. But I don’t want to make my car sad just to ride in it.”
”Koushi. Think about it from the other side… What if I was dreaming about another luxury car?”
”I’d probably want to die.”
Even though I was desperately making weak excuses, I got shot down in one hit. I’m the worst cheating guy.
”I know it’s a metaphor. The only one who can really be my rival is your big sister.”
”That’s true. If I have to choose one, it ultimately comes down to those 2.”
”Trust that builds up over time has real value. The fact that childhood friends are the strongest is undeniable.”
”Yeah. We understand each other because of the time we’ve spent together.”
”Neither I nor Koushi take our history lightly. No matter how perfect someone else looks, childhood friends will always win.”
That was quite a strong argument. Well, it might be true. If I really have to set priorities, Mayuki and my big sister come first. It’s not even a comparison, but this is a value I can’t change.
”But, I find it strange. I absolutely won’t waver from Koushi, and I don’t even want to talk to anyone else. Why isn’t Koushi like that?”
”Mayuki, I won’t make excuses anymore. My desires… please forgive me for my desires…!”
”I even like the trashy Koushi.”
”I’ve already messed around with about 4 people.”
”I can love you for all of that, but how do you explain it to your big sister?”
”Well, if she doesn’t forgive me, it’s either death or being killed.”
Entering a harem means you need to be ready for death.
When I got involved with Kashiro, I thought, “Oh, I might get killed by big sister.”
Even if that doesn’t happen, I feel like Class Rep might stab me, and I’m kind of giving up on that idea.
If it comes to that, I’ll accept everything without hesitation. The sins of a harem are heavy.
It’s only fair to risk my life to take this challenge.
