Volume 1 Chapter 1 The Man Abandoned In His Hometown

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Kian, I will banish you from this town. Never show your face to me again.”

A cold voice echoed down from the viewing seats of the arena.

It belonged to the man who had just moments ago been Kian’s father.

(Why? It shouldn’t be like this…)

Feeling tears welling up in his eyes, he glanced at the wooden sword that had rolled onto the stone floor.

 He had lost.

His weapon had been knocked from his hands.

 This was his only chance.

He knew that if he lost here, he would be banished.

Yet, before even a second had passed, he had been overpowered without being able to do anything.

”I’m sorry, Kian. I couldn’t hold back in front of God Azrael…”

As he stared at the spreading stains of tears on the stone floor, a sad voice came from just above him.

Looking up, he saw his fiancée, Sarah, frozen in place with a wooden sword in her hands.

No──now it was more accurate to say ‘his former fiancée’.

”I’m sorry, Kian. I’m so sorry.”

He couldn’t muster a single retort to her repeated words.

On this day, Kian Vahid, the eldest son of the Twelve Divine Generals of the Azraelism, was socially dead.

In a religion that required the power to heal the masses while also wielding the force to punish foolish strays, there was no place for a ‘failure’ with only a cup’s worth of magic power.

He had no choice but to descend into the wild and become one of the saved masses.

(I thought I could do it. Even without magic power. I believed that if I just tried hard enough, I could somehow manage.)

But that hope was mercilessly shattered.

He had been crushed by the slender girl standing before him with sheer force.

”Kian, you are no longer my son. You are not permitted to bear the Vahid family name. Leave at once.”

”…! …Thank you for everything up until now…!”

He bit back his frustration and shame, raising his voice.

It was hoarse and messy, but he thought it was understandable enough.

Then he quickly left the arena.

The only pride left to Kian was to avoid showing his tear-streaked face as much as possible.

All beings born into this world possess a cell called ‘tachyonian’ in their bodies──.

Tachyonian is a cell that generates magic power, allowing humans to enhance their bodies and perform magic to manipulate the external world.

It also helps suppress the aging of the body.

Kian was born with a lesser amount of this magic power-generating cell.

If he were a commoner, it wouldn’t have been such a big deal, but as the son of of the Twelve Divine Generals of God Azrael, it was a major problem.

In the Vahid family, one of the central families of Azrael, the greatest trading city made of desert and rock, being weak was a shame for the family, and merely existing was seen as a dark history.

 ”…Did you forget anything?”

 ”Ah. Thanks, Sarah.”

Kian said this with a slight smile to his childhood friend, who had come to see him off at the port.

Around them, merchants and adventurers heading to the western countries were bustling about.

(Sarah stayed with me until the end, even though I’m a failure. I can’t repay her, but at least I have to show my attitude.)

Thinking this, he chose his words carefully and opened his mouth.

”Sarah, I’m thinking of going to the Franz Kingdom in the west.”

”I see… Well then, find a job there, get a cute wife, and live happily.”

”What are you talking about? I’m definitely coming back here. First, I’ll become an adventurer over there, level up, earn money, and gain fame.”

 Sarah furrowed her thin brows.

The long skirt she was wearing swayed in the sea breeze.

 ”An adventurer? Kian?”

”Yeah! I have the healing techniques and sword skills I learned at the Azrael Monastery of Martial Monks! I’ve heard that healers are valuable over there. There must be a party that needs me. First, I’ll──.”

 ”Kian.”

Sarah quietly interrupted Kian, who had started to speak about his bright future.

She held her long hair down against the wind and let her gaze wander, as if she were hesitating.

After a moment, she nodded as if she had made a decision and said:

”Give up on me. And on your dream of coming back to this country.”

 ”What…?”

”Don’t you get it? People have their strengths and weaknesses, and sometimes, no amount of effort can change that. I’m not saying this to be mean, but you should really look for another path.”

”Sarah, you come here and say that? I’ve been working my butt off for you!”

”I’m saying this for your own good. Besides, I’m already with Sir Jibril now. So don’t talk about what’s best for me.”

 ”W-What!?”

 Jibril is Kian’s younger brother.

Unlike Kian, he’s a genius, said to be the best in both swordsmanship and healing since the beginning of their family.

He had an arranged fiancée, but they broke it off a few months ago, and he had been persistently pursuing Sarah.

 ”That jerk, Jibril…!”

 ”That’s how it is.”

Sarah’s words, as she turned her back, carried a tone that felt like she had just shed a heavy burden.

She quickly headed back toward the port town.

”──────! I will definitely come back!”

He clenched his fists and shouted reflexively.

Sarah paused for a moment and glanced back.

The look on her face was one of sadness, like she was looking at a pitiful creature.

 Nothing more. No feelings attached.

”I’ll become stronger and more accomplished, and I’ll come back, so…”

But he couldn’t finish the thought of waiting until then.

 She was clearly relieved.

She had no intention of waiting for Kian.

(No, even so. I still can’t give up this path. I can’t just throw in the towel.)

 He bit his lip.

Sarah’s figure had already disappeared behind the crowd of passengers.

The sound of the ship’s horn announcing departure echoed behind him.

Kian took one last look at his hometown, made of sand and rock.

(I will definitely become stronger and come back…!)
