Volume 2 Chapter 23 Agent
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I (Puruun) relayed the words of the Sistemador to Chancellor Rainsheyn, but he was just as confused.
”What the… So, Lord Yuuta and Claudel are…?”
”Yeah. At least for now… it’s impossible for them to come back in the next few years.”
”Ah… even though she’s such a rebellious one, she’s still my daughter. I’m worried she might feel lonely in that other world.”
”I think Yuuta will take good care of her…”
”…Haha. That’s true…”
Still, I never realized the gate would be such a hassle and cost so much.
The enemy must have anticipated this and already made those small ones operational, then destroyed ours?
That means they must have already set something up on Yuuta’s side too.
Shouldn’t we have sent Yuuta and Ms. Claudel over there? Nah, it’s too late for that now.
But… I can’t keep the truth from Mama Akari and Karin any longer.
And of course, it’s my responsibility to tell them… but I can’t leave the Royal Capital right now.
What to do? I’m feeling desperate, decided to consult Ellulu about this.
”I see. So that’s what happened… Yuuta. I wonder if he’s alive?”
”I don’t know that either. But… even if we can fix the gate, it might take 5 or ten years to understand what’s going on over there or for them to come back…”
”Got it. I’ll go see Ms. Akari and Karin.”
”Huh!? Are you really okay with that? You have work too…”
”What are you saying? There’s nothing more important than family, right? My shop has great staff and apprentices.”
”Ellulu. You… and there’s one more thing I’ve been hiding from you.”
”What is it?”
After I told Ellulu about Karin’s right arm, she punched me hard.
”Puruun. Are you stupid? Why didn’t you tell me something so important properly? We’re family, right? Sure, we’re not blood-related, but I’ve been taking care of Karin since before she could even hold her head up in Tokura Village! And I worked hard to bring her all the way to the Royal Capital… that girl is like my little sister! And to think that all this was happening while I, the big sister, was just chilling without knowing anything…”
”I’m sorry… Ellulu.”
”Come on. Get it together, head secretary. You can’t mess up who you should rely on. You can’t get it wrong when it comes to sharing sadness and joy.”
”I’m sorry, Ellulu…”
So the next day, Ellulu set off for Kashiwagi Manor.
* * *
It’s been over 6 months since I, Melon, came to Kashiwagi Manor.
It’s already summer, and this place, surrounded by wasteland and desert, gets super hot with the occasional hot wind blowing.
But if I wear light clothes, my back scars might stand out, which is a bit of a problem.
Well, my scars are just on the outside, but Karin… she’s already out of the hospital and working hard on her rehab, going to school, and cleaning the lord’s mansion.
I really think she’s a strong girl, just like Yuuta and Mama Akari.
And it seems she’s become Sir Aaron’s favorite, getting all sorts of good treatment and talking about him all the time.
The damage from the burned research building has mostly been figured out, and my colleagues in the research team have started to get back to work.
And me… the materials and documents I secretly took home are still there, and instead of getting scolded for breaking the rules, I was praised for doing well.
Shu and the team of humans and dwarves are also working hard to restore the watermill and generator.
Even without Yuuta, this town is still going strong.
Everyone is working hard towards their ideals.
One evening, after finishing work and stepping out of the rebuilt research building, I was stopped by Sir Aaron’s butler and ended up stopping by the lord’s mansion.
”Sorry to bother you when you’re tired, Melon.”
”Oh, it’s nothing. Did something happen?”
”Today, this arrived for me… read it.”
Sir Aaron handed me a letter.
I must have had a look of surprise on my face when I read it.
”What is this…? Is it for real?”
”I don’t know. Is it just some slanderous nonsense? Or is it a targeted attack… The sender is unknown.”
The letter listed several accusations, like how Queen Asuka is too lenient with humans, and it even said she had an affair with Yuuta and got pregnant.
It ended with, “Is it okay to have such a queen?!” Well, if what it says is true, then this is definitely an attack.
”It came to me, but judging by the content, it’s probably been sent to other lords too. Still, who could it be… Is there anyone else besides me who wants the throne?”
”Haha, Si Aaron, you don’t want the throne anymore, right? But what should we do about this? I think people will find out eventually, but what about Mama Akari and Karin…?”
”Yeah. I don’t really care about the truth of the content or the sender’s intentions, but I’m worried about that too. If this reaches Karin and makes her sad… even I’m sweating a bit.”
”But we can’t just cover it up… I think we should wait for her to come back, verify the truth, and let her handle it.”
”You think so too? Alright. Then I’ll announce in my name that this content is all a lie, and I’ll push it until Yuuta returns.”
”Thank you very much.”
Since Sir Aaron took the lead and exposed this attack as a big lie in the square, there wasn’t much chaos in the manor.
However, people realized again that there are those who aren’t happy about humans in this enclave.
”Hey, Big Sister Melon. I really don’t think Dad is that popular. Especially not with the queen… This is such a ridiculous lie. I wonder who made it up.”
Karin said that, but no way, Karin.
The child of that not-so-popular dad is in my belly.
Actually, I haven’t told Karin that the father of this baby is Yuuta yet; I’ve been covering it up by saying he’s my boyfriend from the Royal Capital.
Mama Akari told me to wait until Karin gets a bit older to explain it herself.
Well, for Karin, who’s right in the middle of puberty, that’s a bit heavy, right?
And as for Mama Akari, she’s not even a little shaken.
I mean, I don’t think she’s just gotten used to my pregnancy drama or anything, but…
”If it’s true, that’d be amazing! Yuuta might become a king!”
Yeah, I guess her trust in Yuuta is rock solid.
But then… when big sis El showed up at the mansion, everything changed.
* * *
The entrance to the mansion is tightly monitored, and my errand for Puruun was quickly reported to the lord, and I was taken straight to the lord’s residence.
”Oh. You are… Ellulu, right? One of the few teleportation returnees in this world. You say you’re here as Puruun’s chief secretary, but is the Royal Capital that busy?”
”Um, I’m not very smart, so I might not explain it well, but Puruun wrote a letter for me. Please read that first.”
Saying that, I handed over the sealed letter that Puruun told me to give only to the lord.
As he read the letter, I could see his expression getting more and more serious.
After finishing, he carefully folded the letter and put it in his desk drawer.
”Ah, I see… So that’s why you’re here. Since the secretary can’t leave the scene, you, who are close to Akari, came to explain directly? And it’s true that Yuuta is the father of Asuka’s child?”
”Yes. That’s correct.”
”If that’s the case, I’ll ask you. Please support Akari and Karin so they won’t be too shocked. Only you can do that. If you need any help after that, don’t hesitate to let me know. Still, a protest against the queen… with that strange document from the other day, we’re totally behind the curve.”
”Thank you, my lord. If anything comes up, I humbly ask for your assistance.”
Hmm.
Sir Aaron, you’ve really softened up, huh? While I was sipping my tea, Melon rushed in.
It seems the lord called for her.
”El-nee!?”
”Wow, Melon! Long time no see!! Your belly is starting to show a bit. How are you feeling?”
”Yeah, I think I’m in the stable period now… wait! Why is El-nee here all of a sudden?”
”Well, calm down, Melon. I’ll explain it to you.”
With that, the lord summarized the letter from Puruun for Melon. Thank goodness. I couldn’t explain it clearly myself.
Hearing that, Melon turned pale.
”What… you mean the queen is pregnant? That’s one thing, but… he might not come back!? I can’t tell Mama Akari and Karin that!!”
”But… we have to tell them. We can’t turn a blind eye to reality.”
”That’s… El-nee…”
