Volume 1 Chapter 10 Fortress City Abyss Vena
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
According to Milly, the journey from the Forest of Darvis to Abyss Vena would take about two days. Along the way, we encountered a few monsters, but Milly effortlessly dealt with them, allowing our trip to go smoothly.
During the journey, I took the opportunity to pull as much general knowledge about this world from Milly as possible.
First, the world I’m in is called Grimoire. Grimoire has two continents, and the one I’m currently on is known as the Magic Continent.
The Magic Continent is governed by the True Demon Kingdom, ruled by a Demon Lord at the top. The kingdom is composed of eight clans, which Milly listed as: True Demon, Black Dragon, Garuda, Dream Demon, Rakshasa, Asura, Ghost, and Majin.
Interestingly, the eight races from character creation seem directly tied to these clans.
As for population, Milly explained the approximate ratio of the kingdom’s inhabitants as follows:
- True Demon: 1%
- Black Dragon: 1%
- Dream Demon: 3%
- Asura: 5%
- Rakshasa: 5%
- Garuda: 15%
- Majin: 30%
- Ghost: 40%
Next, regarding language, the common tongue of the kingdom is called Western Language. While I can speak it fluently, I discovered I can’t read it. The squiggly letters on signposts made no sense to me.
Milly explained that other languages exist as well:
- Dragon Language, used by the Black Dragons
- Demon Language, used by the Ghosts
- Beast Language, used by some Garuda
Fortunately, Milly assured me that as long as I can speak Western Language, I’ll be able to communicate in any region. That eased my worries since I have zero confidence in learning new languages.
Still, I resolved to learn the Western script. Once things settle down, I’ll ask Milly to tutor me. After all, in any world, people who can’t read or write don’t get decent jobs.
On the topic of magic, it turns out there’s more to it than the healing magic Milly had previously shown me. It truly feels like a fantasy world!
Curious, I asked Milly to demonstrate a beginner-level fire spell. She conjured a fire arrow, which appeared at my fingertips and shot out toward an imaginary enemy. I barely held back from shouting, “Cool!”
When I asked how to learn magic, Milly explained that it’s tough without passing the Magic Certification Exam at the Magic Guild. While some people can cast magic without certification, their magic levels tend to be low.
If this world isn’t a game and there’s no way for me to return home, learning magic would be essential for survival. I can only hope I have some talent for it.
I had more questions for Milly but decided to hold back so I wouldn’t seem too suspicious.
Finally, we arrived at our destination: Abyss Vena, the largest city in the southern part of the True Demon Kingdom.
Abyss Vena is surrounded by massive castle walls and divided into four sections—north, south, east, and west—forming a square, with each side measuring 4 kilometers.
- The north houses the noble district, including the Margrave’s castle.
- The south is the hunter district, filled with inns, taverns, and the Hunter Guild, where monster hunters reside.
- The west is the magic district, home to the Magic Guild and healing shops.
- The east is the merchant district, bustling with blacksmiths and traders.
There’s also a military garrison nearby.
We headed to the south gate, where four or five people were lined up, waiting to enter the city.
”Stop. Present your ID or guild card. Also, pay a city entry tax of 3 copper coins.”
A man who looked like a gatekeeper said this nonchalantly.
I had no idea if that was expensive or cheap since I didn’t know the prices in this world.
Plus, I didn’t have any money at all.
”Next!”
It was my turn.
A black stone pillar stood in front of me.
”Please present your ID or guild card.”
”I don’t have either… and I don’t have any money.”
The man who was writing in the ledger looked at me suspiciously.
Then Milly stepped closer.
”That person is Sir Kent, my owner, a Majin.”
The gatekeeper’s face turns pale, then completely white when he sees Milly.
”W-Wait, Lord Blackdagger!!”
The gatekeepers start to buzz with excitement.
”I can vouch for Sir Kent, so is it alright if we pass through?”
”Y-Yes, please go ahead.”
I nod to the gatekeepers and walk through the gate.
VIP treatment is amazing.
I just breezed right in.
Ms. Milly, who the heck are you? I knew you were noble from your status, but…
this VIP vibe is off the charts.
”Sorry, Kent. I could’ve at least paid the entrance tax, but the paperwork is a hassle.”
”Still, Milly, you’re something else. The gatekeepers were shocked.”
”Hm? Well, I’m kind of a local celebrity in this town.”
Milly replies with a bit of a blush.
”Anyway, what do you want to do now? Is there anywhere you want to go?”
”Not really, but I don’t mind if we take care of your business first.”
It’d be way more efficient to rely on Milly, who knows the area, rather than trying to figure things out alone.
After she finishes her errands, I’ll ask her to show me around the town.
”Then, I’d like to settle up at the Hunter’s Guild and drop off my stuff at home.”
”Okay, can you show me around this town after that?”
”Got it. Leave it to your big sister.”
Milly seems to be walking a bit more cheerfully.
So, does that mean I can interpret this as a ‘date’?.
’Date’ is a word I had no connection to in my original world. Watching lovey-dovey couples, I’d always think, “I hope their happiness explodes.” And now, here I am, in a situation that feels like it just dropped out of the sky.
Thinking about it makes me nervous.
Looking around the town, eating, and then, well, there’s that thing, right? Is it okay to hold hands? It’s not a big deal to hold hands in public, right? Should I link arms instead?
A bunch of questions pop into my head.
My mind is filled with thoughts of ‘dates’ as I head toward the Hunter’s Guild.
Wait, wasn’t this about gathering information?
