Volume 1 Chapter 18 Margrave Heido And The Identification Card
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After a while, I was walking towards the Margrave’s castle, located on a slightly elevated hill in the ‘Noble Street.’ I was there to get an identification card. Milly, who was walking ahead, was dressed sharply in a knight’s attire, which looked more like a school blazer uniform with its decorated jacket and skirt. The colors were a white jacket and a navy skirt.
”Ms. Milly, isn’t your skirt a bit short? It keeps fluttering, and I can’t help but notice…”
”That big building over there is the Margrave’s castle.”
When I looked in the direction Milly was pointing, I could see a building that appeared several times larger than the Blackdagger family’s estate, even from a distance. Surrounding the castle was a moat, creating a scene that truly felt like a castle within a castle.
As we reached the suspension bridge over the moat, a gatekeeper stopped us.
”Lord Blackdagger, it’s rare to see you at the castle. What brings you here today?”
The man asked with a confident demeanor, quite different from the outer gate guards.
”Today, I have come to request an identification card for this person.”
Milly answered without hesitation. So cool. I’m totally falling for her. The gatekeeper scrutinized me with a sharp gaze.
”Oh, so this is the one from the rumors…”
Huh? What rumors? Could it be that the incident at the Hunter Guild yesterday has already spread? The power of word-of-mouth is truly frightening. I gave a slight nod to the gatekeeper.
”I will inform the Margrave now, so please wait here.”
Milly looked shocked at the gatekeeper’s words.
”Wait? I just need to get the identification card, not an audience with Margrave Heido!”
The gatekeeper made a troubled expression.
”The lord seems to be interested in the owner of the ‘Nightmare Beast Black Dagger’… so I’m afraid you can’t decline.”
I could see Milly’s face showing a hint of annoyance.
”Maybe in that case, issuing an ID will be impossible.”
”It can’t be helped. Please take care of it.”
The gatekeeper instructed a subordinate to take care of it. The subordinate hurriedly crossed the bridge and disappeared into the building. I entered the waiting room being built next to the bridge, and Milly’s face looked troubled.
”Milly, what kind of person is this Margrave Heido?”
”Hmm? Well, he’s technically my boss. He’s been knighted, so he has some honor.”
Boss and subordinate.
”But you look like you don’t want to meet him.”
I couldn’t tell if she disliked him, but he seemed like someone she didn’t want to see much.
”Well, you know… there are various reasons.”
Did she experience some kind of harassment?
”Well, it seems he’s interested in Kent this time, so we’ll meet.”
What could it be… a sense of unease spread again. This is probably the bad kind of anxiety. Will I be able to return safely?
After waiting in the waiting room for a while, I got permission to meet, so I followed the gatekeeper across the bridge to the mansion. We passed through the entrance hall and crossed a ridiculously long hallway, arriving at the Margrave’s office.
When I opened the door, there was Margrave Heido. He looked to be in his forties or fifties, with a sharp face and a strong presence, like a true warrior. He was struggling with some paperwork, using all 6 of his arms, a trait of the Asura tribe, to stamp the documents with approval. Is he really checking the contents properly?
As I was taken aback by the sight, Margrave Heido spoke to me.
”You are the owner of the ‘Nightmare Beast Black Dagger’.”
Margrave Heido’s intense gaze was sizing me up. The atmosphere felt heavy. Was it a killing intent?
”Uh, nice to meet you. I’m Kent from Majin.”
Margrave Heido didn’t even glance at my greeting and turned to Milly instead.
”Miriallia, are you really going to entrust the ‘Nightmare Beast’s Black Dagger’ to someone like him?”
”With all due respect, I believe there is no one else besides Sir Kent who can be entrusted with it.”
Milly’s tone becomes more assertive. Is the ‘Nightmare Beast’s Black Dagger’ really that valuable? Should I return it…? But this is a token of the vow between Milly and me, so I can’t give it back.
Margrave Heido sizes me up again.
”There’s no way this weak man can be recognized as the owner of the ‘Nightmare Beast’s Black Dagger,’ the proof of the Demon Lord’s companion!”
His loud voice echoed in the office, shaking the walls. Huh? I don’t understand. This dagger is proof of the Demon Lord’s companion? Wait, does that mean Milly is a candidate for the Demon Lord’s bride?
”Margrave Heido, I have already declined the title of ‘Demon Lord’s bride.’ I have also received approval from the current Demon Lord, Sir Shifa.”
”But, however…”
”I would like to end this conversation here.”
Milly declares the end of the discussion with a pained expression.
”You said your name is Kent… If you do so now, I will overlook everything. Withdraw your claim on Miriallia.”
Margrave Heido, thinking he couldn’t get through to Milly, pressured me to break my vow with her, and without thinking, I responded.
”I refuse. I may be lacking in talent and strength, but as a man, I cannot break my promise!”
Anger spread across Margrave Heido’s face. The seal he was holding shattered and scattered across the room.
”Kent! Watch out!”
The moment I felt a murderous intent, Milly rushed in, but it was too late.
”Don’t underestimate me!”
Whoosh! A sword suddenly appeared, pressed against my neck. The coldness of the blade sent a chill down my spine. I couldn’t see the tip of the sword at all. Maybe I’ve already been beheaded. If I die, Milly would be sad… Thinking that made my body stiffen.
A silence lingered for a while.
”Hey, Heido, can you keep your teasing to a minimum…?”
The gatekeeper spoke up.
