Volume 2 Chapter 17 Interlude – The One Who Protects…
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Today, we were going to test the performance of the armor and shield that Milly had been working on in the garden.
The participants in the experiment were me, Milly, Aurelia, Feria, Lina, and Lana.
As for Annabella, she was giving an orientation to the new Hunting Group member who arrived yesterday.
So, right now, I was facing Aurelia while wearing the armor.
”Lord Kent, I’m coming in! Ha!”
Aurelia swung down her wooden sword toward me.
I positioned my shield to deflect her attack.
Bang!
’Attack detected, emergency mode activated, barrier deployed.’
A white light burst from the armor I was wearing, enveloping my body.
”Wow! Mr. Kent is sparkling, it looks beautiful!”
Feria’s off-topic remark caught my attention, but I decided to ignore it for now.
”Aurelia, you can attack for real. You probably won’t be able to break that barrier.”
”Lady Miriallia, are you sure it’s okay? What if I hit Lord Kent?”
”It’s fine. Even if the barrier were to break, the armor itself has enough defense to absorb it.”
Milly answered confidently.
She probably had a lot of faith in this armor’s performance.
Otherwise, that overly protective Milly wouldn’t say it was okay for me to be attacked with full strength.
”Aurelia, I think I’ll be fine too, so give it your all!”
”Y-yes, understood! Here I go! Zeaaaahhh!!”
Whoosh!
The sound of the wooden sword slicing through the air echoed as it rushed towards me.
Crack!
Before the sword could hit me, it shattered against what seemed to be an invisible wall.
”It broke perfectly! Lady Miriallia, this barrier is impossible for me to overcome.”
”For now, this barrier is designed to withstand physical attacks from A-class hunter level monsters, with a density about ten times that of a standard magician’s physical barrier.”
”A barrier with ten times the density? Mr. Kent must feel rock-solid now!”
When Feria says it’s rock-solid, I can’t help but feel it means something else, maybe because I’m a bit pervy.
Anyway, the armor I’m wearing now was crafted by Milly convincing the ‘blacksmith Golerg.’ It’s a full suit of armor, complete with a specialized helmet, and compared to the plate armor I wore at the training ground, it’s surprisingly light.
It feels about as heavy as the leather armor I wore during the quest.
Thanks to that, I can move around easily, and Milly said the armor itself has top-notch defense.
And then there’s this physical barrier.
Apparently, this physical barrier is generated by incorporating magic tools into the armor.
”Next is Lina. I’m going to take off the magic-sucking pendant. Use a fireball to hit Kent.”
”Uh! Elder Sister, that’s… Kent might get hurt again.”
”Don’t worry, shoot at full power. I’ve included tools to counter magic, so it should be fine. First, aim for the shield.”
”Kent, make sure to block with your shield. If you get hurt, I might get killed by Elder Sister again!”
Lina readied her staff and began to chant.
During the last incident, she cast it without a chant, so it was fist-sized, but now, a fireball much larger than before was forming right in front of Lina.
I braced my shield.
”Lina, you can go ahead and shoot.”
”With the Inferno Magic Staff boosting my fire ability, the power might reach [mage] class levels… are you really sure? Elder Sister, Kent?”
”Go ahead, shoot.”
”Lina, if Mr. Kent gets hurt, I’ll heal him right away, so it’s fine.”
”..Alright, here goes. ‘Gather magic elements! Become flames and burn the enemy to ashes! Fireball!’.”
A massive fireball rushed toward me.
It’s huge! It looks like it’s over ten times bigger than the fireball I saw before.
If that hits, the surrounding area will turn into a sea of fire.
I gripped my shield even tighter.
Whoosh!
’Magic detection, absorbed.
Magic charging, emergency mode 2 activated, magic barrier deployed’
To my surprise, the shield I was holding absorbed the fireball (fireball) released with full force by Lina.
This means it’s highly likely that the shield is equipped with a magic absorption pendant or a similar magic item.
Moreover, it seems that the absorbed magic is charged into power and used to deploy a barrier.
I was engulfed in a red light that came from the shield.
”Is this even possible? Elder Sister, is it okay for such ridiculous armor to exist? A shield that absorbs magic and forms a magic barrier, what is that! If I have to deal with such equipment, then Magicians are powerless!”
”Lina, you can hit Kent with your strongest attack this time. If anyone can break through it, it might be you.”
”Ughhh! Is the armor mocking me, Elder Sister? Kent! You better take this seriously! I’ll break that barrier and hit you with a blow for sure!”
Lina, hurt by the existence of this unreasonable armor and her pride as a Magician, got furious and began to gather magic again.
Seriously, why do I have to be the victim here? I just hope it’s not enough to actually kill me.
Well, since Lana is here and Milly isn’t stopping her, this magic barrier must be at a pretty high level.
While I was thinking that, Lina was creating an even bigger fireball (fireball) than before.
”By the pride of a Magician, I will blow that barrier into smithereens! Gathered magic elements, turn into flames and burn my enemy to ashes, ‘fireball’!”
A massive fireball was flying towards me.
BOOM.
Just before the fireball hit my body, it erupted in a burst.
The remnants scattered around started to burn as kindling, but I felt no heat or shock against my body, and not a single scorch mark was left on my armor.
”Could it be… that it can’t even leave a single burn mark? Elder Sister, what have you created… If this kind of armor gets put to practical use, the ‘Magician’ will be rendered powerless!”
”That’s right. I think it would be amazing if it could be mass-produced, but a set of armor and shield costs about 65 big gold coins. This is made specifically for Kent, so we plan to provide the Hunting Group members with armor that doesn’t incorporate any magic tools.”
Milly casually mentioned the price of this armor, and apparently, it costs 65 big gold coins, which is about 650 million yen.
No wonder it’s so light, has excellent breathability, and high defense.
It also comes with features like a barrier generation device, magic absorption, and magic power replenishment, which explains the hefty price tag.
”What? That armor and shield for 65 big gold coins? Lady Miriallia, with that much money, you could buy quite a large territory!”
Aurelia looked shocked when she heard the amount.
”Since I had Mr. Golerg work through the night on this, it was quite pricey, but if it means Kent can hunt safely for just 65 big gold coins, it’s a bargain.”
”Just like the Blackdagger family… If I had that much money…”
Aurelia sighed as she muttered.
”Still… this is unbelievable armor. The idea of incorporating magic tools into armor and shields… I have to report this to my father. For a Magician, this armor questions the very purpose of their existence.”
It seems Lana is deep in thought as she looks at my armor.
As expected from the eldest daughter of the influential Dorman family in the magic Guild.
”For now, the experiment was a success. If Ms. Annabella can grow as the shield bearer and this armor provides such strong defense, I can focus on attacking with peace of mind.”
With this armor, I feel like even low-level monsters wouldn’t stand a chance against it, and Annabella might block them all before they even reach me.
Satisfied with the performance of the armor and shield, I suddenly wondered if this armor had a name.
”By the way, does Milly have names for this armor and shield?”
”I heard from Mr. Golerg that they are called the Crimson Magic Armor and the Crimson Magic Shield. I chose the color of the armor.”
So it has a name based on the color of the armor.
”That’s cool! I want to try Mr. Kent’s armor too! Can I wear Ms. Miriallia’s?”
Milly made a scary remark in response to Feria’s request.
”If you don’t mind dying, you can wear it. It’s checked with a magic tool to prevent theft, so only Kent can wear it. If anyone else puts it on, a huge electrical current will flow and they’ll be burned to a crisp, so everyone, be careful.”
After hearing Milly’s words, Feria was trembling.
What a dangerous feature Milly added; now I have to hope the checking magic tool doesn’t malfunction.
Honestly, I would feel safer if that feature was removed.
Next time, I’ll secretly ask Mr. Golerg to consider it.
