Volume 2 Chapter 26 Quest: Azrael’s Pursuer III

”Descend underground!”
The woman opened the metal lid.
The sound of a ladder falling echoed.
If they went down from there, they would reach the sewer that runs through the heart of the East End.
The sewer should connect to the moat that surrounds the town.
In addition to the kitchen’s odor, a strong, pungent smell resembling that of sewage reached their noses.
”Ohh!”
The man threw his curved sword at Kian and jumped into the opened hole leading underground.
The woman had already escaped downwards.
Against the enemy’s throwing attack──
The kitchen was narrow, but it didn’t matter for Kian, who possessed exceptional sword skills and positional awareness.
Without daring to use the protection of Windsong Blade, Kian deflected the curved sword with swordplay akin to magic and leaped down into the sewer, his flashy Roses-patterned jacket fluttering.
”Haaaah!”
As soon as he landed on the stone passageway that was several steps higher beside the flow of the sewer, a man lying in wait drew a knife and charged.
Kian dodged the attack, deflected the man’s elbow, and caused him to miss with the knife.
”Ah…”
Kian thrust his elbow into the man’s face as he swam forward.
Then he forcefully stomped down on the fallen man’s leg.
”────!”
At the man’s scream, the woman who had been leading the way stopped in her tracks.
Kian raised his voice.
”Woman, are you going to let him die?”
”…Tsk”
”──No… Run away…”
The man groaned as blood spilled from his mouth.
He’s a brave man, even though he might be killed if he speaks.
But from Kian’s point of view──
(If she had begged for this man’s life life, I could have used him, but she’s a boring person.)
She doesn’t have an intend to help him.
So, Kian kicked the man in the stomach.
Ugh──he spurts blood again and stops moving.
He didn’t kill anyone.
After all, there are many things he needs to talk about.
He’ll leave the questioning to Maribel’s guards, though.
”Damn… you disobeyed God, you exiled one…”
”Exile?”
Kian asked, staring at the female assassin who pulled out a large knife from her pocket.
”Do you know me?”
”────────”
The woman goes quiet, giving the impression that she has given away unnecessary information.
Kian readied his greatsword in the narrow passage.
The distinctive stench of the sewer numbed her nose, while fierce wastewater flowed nearby with a gushing sound.
The woman was breathing heavily with tension.
It seemed she was unable to step forward.
(Then, let’s provoke her)
”What’s wrong, not going to attack? The god Azrael should despise cowards.”
”────! Haaa!”
The woman lunged forward with a slash.
Indeed, her movements were far more refined than those of the assassins encountered before.
It felt like she had undergone some kind of formal combat training.
That was the impression she gave.
(But)
Kian removed the ‘glasses’ and tossed them upwards.
His thoughts returned to normal, and his vision cleared as well.
Kian deftly deflected the knife from the woman’s hand in a single leap.
The wind pressure from his magic sword disrupted her stance in the instant she closed the distance.
The overwhelming power of his blade made it a one-sided contest—completely out of her league.
”Ah!”
The assassin arched her body dramatically.
The black fabric covering her body swayed in the damp wind of the sewer.
”Die!”
She stepped in and slashed down──.
But the Windsong Blade howled and gouged into the woman’s right shoulder.
”Agh…!”
But──, something good happened to the woman, and bad luck happened to Kian.
In the split second before the blade could cleave her flesh, she lost her balance on the wet ground beneath her.
The black, rotting filth on the floor saved her from being cleanly bisected.
The Windsong Blade instead carved deeply into her insides at an angle, sending her body tumbling down into the sewer below.
”Agh!”
Water splashes up.
The sewage, which reeked of feces, mixed with red blood, and the woman’s body disappeared above the water and sank.
Kian tilted his chin up, held the ‘glasses’ to his face, put them back on, and quickly peered into the waterway.
”Tsk…”
(Crow…!)
──Call.
But there was no familiar to answer the call.
He called out to them again and again, but they never showed any sign of coming towards him.
The summoning seemed to have failed.
”…Maybe because I haven’t subordinated it recently”
Kian lowered his raised hands in front of the flow of sewage.
There are a few of his subordinate crows at the top, but that’s it.
The crows who were supposed to be allies seem to have disappeared from the area.
As if afraid of Kian.
They temporarily disappeared from the town.
(When I wear the glasses, they have come to fear me. Has the downside of that come to light?)
”Bats… are no good. They’re not nearby either.”
’Hmph, cowardly creatures. How dare they run from their master. After all, they are just beasts.’
”……”
Kian silently turned to look behind him.
Behind him lay a single unconscious man, completely still.
”────”
