Volume 2 Chapter 26 Quest: Azrael’s Pursuer III

(So, what should be done now? I definitely want to avoid jumping into this filthy water. I might get infected with a plague.)
He had no choice but to give up on the girl who fled──.
Just when he thought that, the noise above began to grow louder.
It seemed that the guards had stormed into the hot spring.
(With that, the battle was completely over.)
Then, he had to return to his original task──the escort mission for Maribel.
From here on, it should be left to the guards and the adventurers who took on the quest.
As for the outcome of the battle──he had killed 6 and captured one.
Among the enemies he was aware of, only the insect master and the eastern person seemed capable of moving properly.
The rest were all likely gravely injured.
Seeing it optimistically, it could be just barely considered passing.

”As for who these guys are, I’ll leave that to the interrogation experts. It’s still uncertain whether I can completely charm the fanatics.”
Kian murmured this and began wrapping a spare cloth from his pouch around the blade of the Windsong Blade.
(However… it seems I was frightened by the crow. When a familiar has unnecessary wisdom, this is what happens. I see, looking at it this way, I understand why Azrael’s magician uses insects. The insects multiply easily, know no fear, and are loyal.)
’Kian, don’t worry about the traitors. If they will not cooperate, then just make them obey by force.’
”Ah, that’s exactly right. …But when things like this happen, I start wanting an insect familiar.”
’You don’t need those lowly creatures. You should make vampires your allies. They are smarter, braver, and more loyal to you than crows.’
”That may be true, but it’s hard to find one. I’ll try it if I get the chance.”
’Ehehehe…’
The ‘glasses’ laughed loudly.
Kian finished wrapping the magic sword in the cloth and returned it to the holder on his back.
(I need to make a sheath soon)
Look up above.
The shouts and screams were getting louder and louder from the bathhouse.
Kian bent over the unconscious man.
(Let’s fix it for now)
’Your ribs are broken. Be careful not to pierce your organs.’
(Yeah, I know)
And then──.
It didn’t take long for the mixed unit of guard and Guild Leader Friedrich’s direct subordinates to descend into the underground sewer where Kian was waiting.

”Kian, thank you for protecting Her Excellency.”
Thirty minutes later, Kian, having emerged from the hot springs, was bowing deeply to Guild Leader Friedrich.
The sun had already begun to decline, and the onlookers on the main street had vanished.
Soon, the adventurers who were unaware of the situation would return from outside the town with their usual catch.
”I merely did what was expected of me. ──What about Her Excellency?”
”She has already been teleported. I contacted the Sword Saint of the Sun, so she should be guarding Her Excellency from the hills onwards.”
”Sword Saint of the Sun?”
”Oswald of Ramsey. He’s the blonde man with shaved sides who accompanied you on your exam.”
”――――”
”He is now the strongest knight on the frontier. Recently, he became the vice-captain of the ‘Knights of the Sun’ and is on the verge of breaking the current ‘Knights of the Sun’ to formally adopt the name himself. There is no other swordsman as skilled as him not only in this frontier but even in the Franz Kingdom. Even Rean, the ‘Lion’s Companion’, was unable to match him. …If he is there, then even if the mercenary group ‘Storm Herd’ threatens Her Excellency, she should be safe.”
Guild Leader Friedrich continued speaking as he took Kian’s arm.
It’s dirty with sewage, but Friedrich doesn’t seem to mind.
”Please do not tell anyone about what happened today”
”Of course. They say the mouth is the source of trouble. I won’t tell anyone. But… in return, could you please tell Her Excellency not to do anything reckless? “
”I have already told her. …Really, what is that princess thinking?.. No, I’m not in a position to say such things, but”
”I understand how you feel”
”It’s something that can’t be helped considering her age, but what is the house steward doing? At this rate, she might end up like Lord Godfrey…”
”────”
As Kian silently looked down at Friedrich, he snapped back to reality and shook his head.
”I will investigate the assassins as quickly as possible. I’ll also coordinate with the guards to search for those who escaped. As long as they’re in this town, I will guarantee your safety──though perhaps I can’t fully assure it.”
”No…”
”You’ve truly become strong since being discarded by Azrael. …I hope that strength is used for the right purposes.”
”────”
”I’m sorry. That was uncalled for.”
Friedrich weakly smiled and signaled to the staff standing behind him.
”This is a special reward from me. I’ll add some extra points as well. Make good use of it.”
”I have no reason to accept it.”
”You do. You protected Her Excellency and safeguarded my career as well. Consider it that way. …I cannot allow you to be taken by Oswald so easily.”
’Kian, just accept it.’
The words of ‘glasses’ echoed.
Kian received the small pouch filled with gold coins from Friedrich and lightly bowed his head.
”Thank you very much.”
”Is there anything else you need? I’ll try to help you as much as I can.”
”Then, put in all the thyme leaves and dried meat”
”What do you use it for? Surely you’re cooking?”
Kian lowered his eyes at Friedrich’s words.
”To the crows and the assassins I killed today, I’ll put it in their mouth so they won’t get hungry in the afterlife.”
”I see. I get it.”
”As for the crows, can I bury them in the dungeon ‘Catacombs’?”
”The process has already begun. If you want to join in the burial, feel free to do so.”
”Well then”
Kian clasped his hands together in front of him, then slipped past him and headed toward the heart of the East End.
The golden sun burned his eyes.
After that, the ‘glasses’ whispers mockingly.
’What? You want to show respect to the dead? I do not think they have any good intentions.’
(It’s not like they’re doing it out of goodwill. They’re just following tradition. Gods, traditions… these can always serve as the perfect reason to become ruthless murderers.)
’Hehehe…’
The shadow cast by Kian stretched long and dark along the central street.
From his body, there was a strong smell of blood mixed with the stench of sewage.
Before returning to his daily lives, it seemed necessary to wash away the malice and filth.
