Volume 2 Chapter 51 Quest: The Mirror That Sucks Magic II
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The stairs leading down continued for about 2 floors before reaching a hollow space.
There was no sign of stone or brick paving; the footing was uneven and appeared to be natural.
However, a mysterious lamp emitting blue light was hanging from the ceiling.
The lamp seemed to react to Kian and the others’ intrusion, intensifying its glow and brightly illuminating the cave.
It was not entirely a natural formation; it appeared that someone had modified the original cave.
”…Could someone have lived here?”
Behind her, Maribel, now dressed in a fur coat and comfortable women’s bottoms, whispered quietly.
Five young guards followed her, anxiously glancing up and down.
The place where they descended the stairs resembled an observation deck.
It seemed there was a staircase leading further down from the edge on the right side.
Kian took the lead, heading from the observation space toward the staircase, descending the uneven and unstable steps.
(An oval-shaped plaza. It continues further inside.)
”What is that lighting?”
”Your Excellency, should we collect it on the way back?”
”It would be better to show it to the head magician first. Even if we take it, the ceiling is quite high.”
While listening to Maribel and the others talking behind him, Kian looked around the plaza.
In one corner, it seemed part of the cave wall had collapsed, with rubble piled up.
At the far end of the plaza stood 2 stone statues.
Having just seen gargoyles at Christy’s house, he instinctively tensed up, but fortunately, even through his glasses, he couldn’t sense any magic power emanating from the statues.
”Let’s enter the room at the back.”
”Yes. Still, the fact that such an underground is spread out beneath the place where I usually wake up is quite chilling.”
”Your Excellency, perhaps you should move your sleeping quarters to another location starting tonight? With such a hollow space, there is a risk of collapse.”
”That’s true. The west wing isn’t used much as a guest room, so maybe I should relocate there.”
They passed between the statues and entered the room at the back.
The back room continued to have a similar space, but there was one notable difference.
”Dried thorns…”
As Kian stepped into the room, he murmured that.
On the walls of the blue-lit space, a brown, spiky plant clung tightly, resembling the roots of a tree.
However, having long since lost its moisture, it easily peeled away when brushed with a hand.
Upon closer inspection, the ground was covered with the crushed remnants of thorns, gathering dust.
”It looks like a blood vessel… it’s kind of gross.”
”Is it really possible for thorns to grew in such an underground place? It’s certainly more eerie than mysterious.”
”There’s a reaction from a magic tool deeper inside. Your Excellency, perhaps we should pause here──”
Just as Kian was about to finish his sentence, a thundering sound echoed from the inner room, shaking the very axis of the earth.
Boom──
It was a low, heavy vibration that made his knees tremble.
”W-What was that!? An earthquake…? Is there something in there?”
The guards murmured in agitation.
Kian kicked the thorn-covered stone floor and charged into the inner room.
As he passed through the small entrance into the problematic room, he found it to be wider and with a higher ceiling than the previous 2.
Multiple lamps hung from the ceiling, filling the space with blue light.
The walls were again covered with dried thorns, clinging like veins.
”……!”
In the center of the room.
A silver golem, about 5 meters (16’4″) long, was struggling, chained by thorns.
The thorns entangled around the golem’s limbs were massive.
They resembled a thick carpet.
While the thorns on the walls were brown, those covering the golem’s limbs were lush and green.
They seemed to be overflowing with moisture and life force.
”Ugh! What is that!? A golem? Your Excellency, please step back!”
Maribel and the guards, who entered late, also took a defensive stance.
The golem, sensing the presence of intruders, began to thrash about even more.
Its silver body would jump slightly, only to be pulled back by the thorns, kneeling on the ground.
When the golem’s thick arms slammed against the thorny carpet, large stone spears erupted from the floor with a sound like cracking earth, but they quickly lost their shape and collapsed.
The air was filled with loud thunderous sounds and vibrations.
Looking closer, the thorn carpet had lots of ripped-up spots.
Maybe the golem broke free from the thorn chains a few times.
Kian raised his arm to hold back the young princess behind him.
”Be careful. That’s a mithril golem.”
”Mithril…? Is its whole body made of mithril?”
”Not sure, but at least the surface is.”
Mithril isn’t just strong—it also repels evil better than silver.
It’s super expensive, so making weapons with it costs a fortune. But it works great.
(It’s perfect for fighting ghosts and vampires. Were those Night Wraiths too scared to come forward? Or maybe they just couldn’t touch the magic tool in the back?)
’Now that I think about it, that old high elf hag used a divine sword made of mithril too.’
(Mithril resists magic really well. To beat it──)
Kian narrowed his eyes behind his glasses.
Its silver body had no gaps, like full knight armor.
(Gotta crush the core somewhere in its body.)
”So this caused the earthquake, huh? Kian, should we pull back for now?”
”──Your Excellency, fighting that thing is nuts! Let’s call Lord Owl or someone! Our weapons won’t work on it.”
”Owl’s at a Guild meeting today, Liam. The Knights of the Sun ceremony is coming up soon──”
”No problem.”
Kian gave a short reply, took off his glasses, and slid them into his pocket.
”No need for backup. I’ll take it down alone. Your Excellency, stay with the guards in the next room.”
”You nuts? You trying to get yourself killed?”
One of the guards shouted, disbelief spreading among them.
”You’re really gonna face that mithril giant…?”
Without a word, Kian reached for the hilt of the Windsong Blade.
In the instant the sword’s hilt revealed a pockmarked blade, the magic language etched on it ignited a vivid orange light.
The air around warped, and the hole in the blade began to emit a sound like a woman’s scream.
’──────!!’
The thorns that had entangled the golem were torn apart with a ripping sound.
(I see, after tearing the thorns like that, an earthquake happened upstairs until they were restrained again. But)
The torn thorns began to decay, turning brown from the ripped sections.
They were the same as the thorns clinging to the wall.
(I won’t be getting any support from the thorns.)
Kian drew the magic sword from its sheath.
He extended the blade parallel to his body.
Shing──A high metallic sound mixed with the wind.
”Kian.”
Maribel’s voice trembled slightly.
Was it from anxiety or excitement?
Only she knew her true feelings.
”Are you really okay on your own?”
”I don’t know. But I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
The giant, freed from the thorns, turned awkwardly toward him.
Kian readied his sword in a defensive stance.
He didn’t know what would happen if he fought.
If he lost, he would be crushed pitifully.
Yet his mind was as calm as a still sea.
He watched the enemy’s moves carefully, looking for an opening.
──The core.
’Ha, that is right. There is nothing to fear. No one can defeat you, armed and filled with magic power.’
”Wind.”
A tremendous amount of magic power surged from Azrael’s warrior monk body.
The Windsong Blade let out a scream that threatened to shatter eardrums.
Maribel and the others were pushed back into the other room by the sound pressure.
’──────!!’
From above, a silver arm rose like a crashing avalanche.
Its five fingers looked almost human, as if a person in strong armor had appeared out of nowhere.
”────”
Kian quickly gathered his energy and kicked the ground.
He slipped past the mithril arm and dove into the enemy’s range.
The magic language glowed on the raised Windsong Blade.
In that instant,
Seven slashes struck the golem’s massive body at once.
