Later, they ended up binding the golem again with sturdy restraints.

It seemed they couldn’t find a large, sturdy cart to transport the golem right away.

According to the guards, they planned to show it to the head magician serving the palace and have them operate it to move it out.

It was a reasonable decision, but Kian had serious doubts about whether iron chains could bind a mithril giant.

After all, this golem had even used magic.

Its mithril body seemed to limit the magic it could use, but it had already been confirmed to create stone spears.

 It was undeniably dangerous.

Still, the golem was temporarily entrusted to Steward McCutchen, so Kian couldn’t say anything about it.

Working together with the guards, they bound the golem and, once finished, left the basement with everyone except the lookout.

They exited through the hole in the wine cellar wall and returned to the surface after several dozen minutes.

When they stepped into the courtyard, they found Maribel and the curly-haired old fat steward, McCutchen, already there, chatting.

Surrounding them were McCutchen’s entourage of guards.

One of them was the bald Baron knight, Waterman, whom Kian had met at the murder scene the other day.

”Your Excellency, the request is complete. The golem is bound in the basement. If it starts rampaging again, just contact me, and I’ll come to subdue it immediately.”

 ”Good work, Kian.”

 ”…Why are you here?”

In contrast to Maribel, who smiled and offered words of praise, the old steward’s reaction was stern.

He puffed out his round belly and glared at Kian, trying to intimidate him.

However, with the height difference and Kian’s recent increase in muscle, McCutchen just looked like a fat wild boar trying to act threatening.

 Maribel quietly interjected.

”I was the one who requested his help. As a result, he skillfully defeated the mithril golem.”

 ”He was! amazing….”

A young guard blurted out excitedly but shrank back under McCutchen’s gaze.

Though the old steward likely wasn’t of noble birth, his position of authority made him a formidable figure.

The bald knight, Waterman, glanced between Maribel and McCutchen and spoke up.

”Shouldn’t the mithril golem be left to the Head Magician? Lady Natasha will be arriving soon, won’t she?”

 ”Yes, she should.”

”Let’s continue discussing the security for the ceremony. ──Perhaps we should move somewhere else.”

”Indeed, but there’s something I must say first. ──Hey, you, Kian Vahid!”

”…I have no family name. Just call me Kian, Steward.”

 ”Tch, how pretentious.”

The old steward twisted his expression and pointed a finger at Kian.

”Listen well. I don’t know what you’re plotting, but if you bring disaster to our fortress, even if the lord has allowed you to stay, I’ll revoke that and have your head! I can see through you, no matter how you try to hide it. You’re a ‘professional killer’ trained in that country’s elite education!”

”Oh, McCutchen. Kian is no cold-blooded assassin. He’s kind, responsible, thoughtful──a wonderful person.”

”Hah, what nonsense. He’s just a mere adventurer. A lowly commoner.”

 Waterman sneered.

His hawk-like eyes glared sharply at Kian.

Kian simply kept his gaze down, calm and composed.

”Surely, you’re not one of those ‘Azrael’s Death Sword Users’ causing chaos in our territory? We won’t let our land become a breeding ground for terrorists.”

 ”I don’t understand what you’re saying.”

”McCutchen, if he were part of an assassin group, we’d have been dead long ago. In fact, he even saved our lives.”

”That’s only because the protective magic tool His Excellency wears is too powerful for him to act against. This man was exiled from his country 15 years ago for lacking magic power, and even as an adventurer, he’s remained at the bottom. It’s highly likely he’s been recruited by Azrael’s extremists, betting on a last-ditch effort to turn his life around! Guards, seize him at once!”

 ”Please stop this violence!”

 The young guards exchanged glances.

They were torn between obeying McCutchen or Maribel.

Emotionally, they leaned toward Maribel’s command, but ignoring McCutchen could cost them their jobs.

After a few seconds of silence.

 Waterman’s subordinates──McCutchen’s entourage of knights──took a step toward Kian.

Reluctantly, the guards followed suit, surrounding Kian.

Maribel’s dark blue eyes widened in shock.

Her pale pink lips were tightly pressed together.

Neither Christy nor Owl was here──

 She had no allies left.

 ’What will you do, Kian?’

 (Perfect timing.)

Kian had been sending a sticky, unsettling gaze toward a few of Waterman’s subordinate knights.

He wanted bodies to feed to the Night Wraith.

He had hesitated to kill innocent people, but now he had a reason.

If they acted disrespectfully, he wouldn’t mind slaughtering them mercilessly.

Even if they were just following orders, they were still rude.

Kian felt the corner of his mouth curl up.

──Charm them and lure them to the town streets at night.

 They’d make good breeding grounds.

Perhaps his thoughts were still influenced by when he wore his “glasses,” as he could only see them as prey now.

 However.

As if to dispel Kian’s dark, twisted thoughts, a clear voice rang out.

 It was Maribel.

”Step back! I won’t allow anyone to lay a hand on Kian!”

”Your Excellency… Sir Waterman, what should we do?”

 ”Stand down.”

 ”Yes, sir.” “As you wish.”

”McCutchen, Waterman. Perfect timing. I have a proposal to make.”

The little princess stood on her tiptoes, glaring up at the portly steward.

But her hands were clenched into fists, trembling slightly.

She was nervous and uneasy in front of these large, imposing men.

Especially toward McCutchen, she might have felt something close to ingrained fear.

Still, she looked around at everyone present and continued speaking.

”Regarding the upcoming succession ceremony of the Knights of the Sun, I would like to assign Kian Vahid to fill the vacant position of security captain. He saved my life, possesses unparalleled bravery, has excellent situational awareness, and as an Azraelian, he may be able to anticipate the attackers’ thoughts. Overall, I believe it would be difficult to find anyone more suitable than him. What do you think?”
