Volume 2 Chapter 53 To Achieve Fame
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”I see. So in exchange for officially lifting my suspension, I’m supposed to keep an eye on Kian.”
Evening.
After Waterman’s subordinate, who had accompanied her to Christy’s residence, finished explaining the situation to the black-haired Head Magician at the doorway, she let out a deep sigh with those words.
She had been tending to the herb garden in the basement, wearing an apron over her blouse.
Her hair was tied up with a brown ribbon, hanging down in front of her chest.
”Lady Christina, this is an order from Sir McCutchen.”
”Alright, alright, I get it. No complaints here. Though I wouldn’t have minded staying cooped up at home a bit longer.”
(She’s totally complaining…)
”You are complaining.”
Perhaps the messenger knight thought the same thing, as he furrowed his brows and said so.
”This barely counts as a complaint. Is that all for the message?”
”Yeah.”
”Got it. Then go on home. Bye-bye.”
”Christina.”
Kian’s voice came out low, his brow furrowed.
It slipped out.
Her overly rude behavior toward her colleague was a problem.
If it were some random woman, he’d let it slide, but he didn’t want Christy to face any misfortune.
That’s why he felt the need to remind her.
”What?”
”There’s such a thing as basic courtesy, you know.”
”Huh? What are you suddenly going on about?”
”──Mr. Kian, don’t mind her. She’s always like this.”
”That’s not acceptable, guard. I’m pointing this out precisely because I care about her.”
”Wha──!?”
”Huh!?”
”──Just kidding.”
”Eh…”
”Ugh, Kian!”
”Now that you understand, please say goodbye to him properly, Ms. Christy.”
As Kian said this with a cheerful smile, Christy muttered, “Fine, I get it,” with a pout.
”Thank you for the message. I’ll take my duties seriously. Please convey my regards to Sir McCutchen as well.”
”…I’m surprised. I never expected Lady Christina to be so compliant.”
’Compliant, huh?’
”It’s just that dealing with that pervert over there would be a hassle.”
”Haa.”
The knight still looked somewhat unconvinced, but eventually turned to Kian and said:
”Then, at a later date, I’ll explain the details of the security mission at the ceremony venue. Be ready to respond to the summons.”
”Understood.”
”And… I hope you don’t become an enemy. Face your foes without fear──it’s one of the teachings during a knight’s inauguration, but honestly, I can’t see a future where I’d win against you.”
”Victory depends on the conditions at the time. I also feel no desire to oppose you. ──We’re allies, aren’t we?”
”…Is this where I’m supposed to laugh?”
”Haha, it’s a moment for a cheerful handshake. Let’s work well together from now on.”
”Y-yes… Somehow, talking after Lady Christina makes you seem so approachable, Mr. Kian, it’s almost moving.”
”──What’s that supposed to mean, huh?”
Ignoring the flustered Christy, the knight gave Kian a nod, saying “Well then,” and turned on his heel to walk away.
The gargoyle, seemingly uninterested, kept repeating a yawn mixed with ‘sparks’.
”Smiling, but not really smiling.”
Kian had been waving at the knight with a smile, but turned around at Christy’s voice.
She was leaning against the doorway with her arms crossed.
”You put on a facade with people you don’t care about, huh, Kian?”
”I feel like I can get along well with you, since you can see through it.”
”…Did something change? Is it because you took off your glasses?”
”No… don’t worry about it. I’m the same as always.”
”Really? Well, whatever. More importantly, 2 letters arrived while you were away.”
Christy waved her hand like a magician and pulled out 2 envelopes.
She stared at the seals pressed into the wax.
”One’s from Oswald. It has Ramsey’s crest. The other’s from that kimono (着物) shop from Shin country. Probably to say the order’s ready.”
”Already? They work so fast it’s making me nervous.”
”I get it. I was super nervous at first too. I thought maybe they were just confused and thought it was done.”
”Why did you even decide to order from that shop…”
”The quality of the items in the store was good.”
”Not just a gut feeling, huh?”
”Your opinion of me is a bit iffy, isn’t it? Oh, dinner’s ready. Let’s eat. I’ll reheat it right away.”
”Thanks, Christy.”
Christy smirked slightly, took off her apron, and headed inside.
Kian scraped the mud off his shoes at the entrance and stepped into the room.
On the table in the living room sat a pot of stew, bread, and wine.
Kian went out to the backyard and washed his hands with Christy.
”Still, being chosen as a guard for the ceremony, huh?”
”It’s thanks to Her Excellency Maribel recommending me.”
”I wonder what she’s thinking… Picking someone as unreliable as you for security.”
”If Her Excellency trusts me, I’ll give it my all.”
When Kian answered seriously, Christy stopped the pump and looked up at him.
”Something’s off, isn’t it? Where’s your usual flippant, joking attitude?”
”This is the real me. It might sound weird coming from me, but deep down, I’m serious. It’s one of my few good traits.”
”Hmm, Manon might like that…”
”Maybe. I don’t think she dislikes me, though.”
”────. Eh… Eek!”
”…? What’s wrong all of a sudden?”
Kian’s eyes widened as Christy hugged him.
He tried to act calm, but her ample chest pressing against his arm was starting to get to him.
”You… You remember saying you’d take responsibility, right?”
”Yeah, uh…”
”Manon is off-limits! She’s just a kid. You’ll have to make do with me.”
”Make do…? I think Christy’s way out of my league.”
”Wha… Y-you’re still a smooth-talker! I was worried you’d eaten something weird and gone crazy, but I guess I was the fool!”
Christy’s face turned bright red as she stormed back into the living room.
Kian followed her with a wry smile.
