Volume 2 Chapter 57 Return, East End

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

East End, which they returned to after 2 days, was noisier than before.

When they teleported near the eastern gate, the guard at the drawbridge reacted within moments and ran toward them.

Upon closer look, the guard was an adventurer Kian had seen a few times at the Adventurer’s Guild.

”Ah, what’s this, the ‘garbage scavenger’… huh? Wait, who’s that pretty lady!?”

”She’s my friend, Ms. Christina Famille.”

 ”…’Garbage scavenger’?”

Kian introduced Christy, but she only cast a displeased glance at the guard.

”Christina Famille? Sounds like some noble name.”

 ”I am a noble.”

When Christy replied coldly, the guard froze for a moment before going pale.

 ”I apologize.”

”It doesn’t bother me. But more importantly, what did you just call Kian?”

 ”Huh…? ‘Garbage scavenger,’ you mean?”

”To me, you look more like the ‘garbage scavenger’ here.”

The black-haired witch’s blunt comment warped the guard’s expression.

However, he seemed unable to voice any retort to a noble.

Honestly, as Christy said, purely based on appearance, the guard looked far more fitting to be called a ‘garbage scavenger.’

Kian patted Christy on the shoulder and stepped forward.

”Let us through the gate. We’ve got business inside. Look, here’s my adventurer badge.”

 ”…Fine. Go on through.”

 ”Thanks.”

With those words, Kian crossed the drawbridge, accompanied by Christy.

 ”What’s with ‘garbage scavenger,’ though?”

Christy glanced back at the guard returning to his post, her gaze sharp as a blade.

”My nickname. In East End, it’s more well-known than my real name”

”Is that why they call you the lowest-rank adventurer?”

”That’s right. I’m sorry if it upset you.”

”Kian, you don’t need to apologize! Ugh, his ragged look is way worse anyway. It’s so annoying!”

”To them, I’m just a lower-rank adventurer they can look down on. It won’t change anytime soon.”

 ”Doesn’t it make you angry?”

”People like that are always searching for someone to mock. When the ones they belittle rise above them, they naturally fall silent. They’ll sulk with jealousy behind the scenes while fawning over you with fake respect.”

They change their attitude on their own without him lifting a finger.

Besides, they have no notable skills and are only good as wraith bait.

 In other words, they’re insignificant.

No matter what they say, it doesn’t bother him.

”But if it upsets Christy, I’ll make sure he can’t act rudely again.”

 ”How will you do that?”

”I’ll politely ask him not to call me ‘garbage scavenger.’”

 ”Like that’s going to work.”

 ”We’ll see.”

 Kian ended the conversation there.

With a dissatisfied black-haired witch in tow, he entered East Street.

They had 3 tasks to complete in East End.

The first was to recruit Serena for a security job.

The second was to deliver a swimsuit to Esther.

Lastly, they needed to ask Aliona if she knew anything about the ‘Thorn Demon’ or someone named ‘Judicus.’

It would be best to visit Serena’s inn first, as it was the closest.

However, since it was midday, she might already be out on a quest.

If that was the case, they would go to Esther and then Aliona in that order.

(Let’s take the chance to grab lunch with Christy at ‘The Boar’s Trot Inn.’)

”First, we’ll head to the ‘Pumpkin Pie Inn.’ Recruiting allies comes first.”

 ”Understood.”

As expected, Serena was out again.

Apparently, she had joined a party of other lower-rank adventurers for a quest.

According to the inn owner, it seems Serena has been doing a quest hunting Vengeful Corpses around the town, and she comes back every day with a terrible smell.

 ”How was it?”

”Not good, they’re not there. She’s probably out dealing with Vengeful Corpses on the west town road again.”

”Vengeful Corpses? That sounds different from what I imagined.”

Christy said while propping herself up against the outside wall of the tavern.

”How is it different? I think it’s a common quest for adventurers.”

”But Vengeful Corpses are monsters that rookie adventurers hunt, right? That’s what I learned from my biology teacher at the academy.”

”That’s true. But in reality, it’s a much harder quest. Vengeful Corpses have tougher skin and bones compared to goblins, and they attack in groups just like goblins. They also have enough smarts to play dead or lure enemies into advantageous positions.”

On top of that, they smell terrible, so cleaning up the bodies is a hassle.

It’s hard work, but the pay is low.

It ranks at the top of unpopular quests in the East End adventurer Guild.

’Aren’t they just trying to make some money?’

(I don’t know, but Serena probably has her own reasons.)

Even though they are party members, their actions are not bound by contract.

Kian had no right to comment on her inefficient hunting.

(I’m also the one leaving her alone.)

”Let’s head to ‘The Boar’s Trot Inn’ first. How about we have lunch there?”

”Lunch!? I’m in! I’m actually quite hungry.”

”You’ve only eaten breakfast, right? …Hmm? Didn’t you have biscuits at Oswald’s?”

 ”That’s a different stomach.”

”Is that so? Let me treat you to lunch. It’s my way of thanking you for keeping me company.”

”Then I’ll let you treat me! I’m looking forward to it since the tea there was very good.”

He set out to central street with the cheerful Christy.

Then, a familiar male voice shouting insults crashed into us like a traffic accident.

When Kian and Christy looked across the street, there was a crowd gathered at the shop where a woman from Azraelian was dressed indecently and soliciting customers.

”Azraelian, there’s been an order that Easterners should avoid leaving the marketplace! If you can’t comply, then you’ll have to leave the town!”

”That’s cruel! Why are we being confined to the marketplace?!”

”You haven’t heard about the murder case? The suspect group includes Azraelians and Easterners!”

 ”What’s that? Isn’t that Waterman?”

A knight stood in the center of the crowd, his shining bald head shaking side to side as he raised his voice.

Christy spotted the bald knight, her colleague, and frowned.

’Isn’t the mutilation murder case culprit someone different from that terrorist group? Weren’t the victims members of the terrorist faction themselves?’

(They’re likely trying to gather foreigners in one place after Maribel’s attempted assassination. But they can’t openly admit that Maribel was in such a rural town, nor that assassins targeted her. So they’re using the murder case as a pretext.)
