”If we burn that carriage, it’ll cause chaos at today’s gathering of nobles! It’ll be a warning to those Franz nobles, and we can also sneak in amidst the confusion.”
”‘You were told?’ By whom?”
”By a woman named ‘Scorpion,’ a tanned woman.”
”Scorpion… like the scorpion? Isn’t that an alias?”
”I don’t know! That’s what she called herself. She said she was an orphan and didn’t know her real name.”
”Where is she now?”
”I don’t know! She hasn’t been to our hideout since her siblings were killed.”
”Where is your hideout? How many of you are left?”
The wound was healing, the flesh around it swelling, but the pain remained.
The man, half-crying, struggled to speak.
”We’ve been using a cave near the ‘Labyrinth of Roses’ in the East End lately! Only me and a guy named Rachid remain. Rachid, after being bitten by the venomous snake you sent, is barely alive thanks to medicine from Scorpion.”
”The fire-breathing guy? The fat one? What about the Shin man?”
”He’s from the funder, Mao Yue! As soon as he knew we failed, he cut ties with us!”
”You said earlier that only Rachid is left, but in that state, you threatened to attack the ceremony?”
”Scorpion told us we had no choice!”
The man covered his face with his peeling hand.
”It’s my son who was captured! He’s more important than my life! We’re a terrorist group, a revolution army! We have to make our statement this way, or no one will listen! We did everything Scorpion said, and now look at us.”
”Tell me everything you know about this woman, Scorpion.”
The man nodded repeatedly to Serena’s calm questioning.
Despite Kian’s devil-may-care attitude, Serena’s beauty likely made him see her as a reasonable person.
He desperately tried to recall, then spoke in a halting manner.
He desperately digs up his memories and starts talking.
* * *
According to the man, it all began about a month ago.
Around that time, they were active in the underworld of the East End and the surrounding towns and streets as the go-to armed organization for ‘Mao Yue’.
One day, they encountered a group of Azraelian travelers who had journeyed from the eastern fishing port.
”Even though their faces were covered with cloth, we could tell that they were all incredibly beautiful just by looking at their eyes, noses, and body shapes through the gaps in their veils,”
”Their leader, Rachid, immediately accepted their request to join our group. Not just Rachid, but all of us had faint hopes of winning over one of the women. … Our hopes didn’t come true, but instead, we gained unexpected power.”
”Power?”
”The women who applied to join us──there was one man among them──were all incredibly skilled. They claimed to have trained at the Azraelian warrior monk temple. We felt a sense of awe, and they trained us to become a more advanced force as a revolutionary army.”
Kian raised an eyebrow.
”You guys called yourselves ‘Azrael’s Death Sword Users,’ right? When did that start? Was it after you received training from those women?”
”No, it was before that. The Twelve Divine Generals who ruled over Rachid’s hometown were said to hold the prestigious title of ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’. We, the revolutionary army, also adopted the name ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’ in hopes of sharing their glorious honor. When the Eastern merchant guild ‘Mao Yue’ spoke of ‘Azrael’s Death Sword User’, they were referring to us.”
In other words…
(The woman who called herself ‘Scorpion’ trained the local armed organization and enhanced their combat abilities. Once the organization grew to a certain extent, they started causing chaos in Margrave Izerland’s territory under the pretense of fulfilling their wishes.)
’Do you have any idea who they might be?’
(Yes.)
Regarding the woman named ‘Scorpion’, he doesn’t know much about it, but he is familiar with their method of training local armed groups to become their pawns.
It’s a common tactic of Azrael’s apostles.
They are powerful but few in number.
So, when they need more manpower for their missions, they increase their forces locally.
Generally, it is said that one apostle can train and command 4 hundred people.
In fact, the monastery had a program to teach this to special apostles.
Kian didn’t get to learn much due to the strong opposition from his father, Umar Vahid.
Sarah and Jibril, for example, were also commanders who could create armies of hundreds of warrior monks on their own.
If those women are Azrael’s apostles, then those trained by them won’t be stopped by just the Insect Masters here.
For instance, it wouldn’t be surprising if everyone in the East End refugee camp had awakened as pseudo-Azraelian warrior monks.
’Hmm…’
(This is also one of the reasons why Azrael’s apostles are considered the strongest in the world.)
’It’s a degraded copy, but with one, they can create an Azraelian warrior monk army. That’s… even if the Night Clan were still alive, they would be a difficult opponent to handle.’
Serena peered into the man’s uninjured eye.
”Do you remember the color of Scorpion’s hair?”
”Black. Her eyebrows are black too.”
”What about her eyes?”
”I wasn’t paying much attention… but I think they were dark-colored.”
”We might be able to make a sketch from just her eye description.”
”A typical Azraelian, with good looks and a fit body, but no other distinctive features…”
The Insect Master man frowned as he spoke.
Serena turned to look at Kian.
”Let’s go back and report to Baron first. Their leader should be at their hideout, this Rachid guy. He’s likely to know more than this man.”
Serena looked back at Kian.
”Yes, I hope Waterman is safe after being attacked by a swarm of poisonous bees. If that bald Baron dies from shock, it’s no joke.”
Serena lent her shoulder to the Insect Master, helping him stand up.
Kian returned the Magic-Draining Mirror to its leather cover and re-sheathed it in the holder on his back.
* * *
It was then that a sharp whooshing sound was heard.
Kian and Serena had their backs turned completely, but Serena was the first to sense the anomaly.
A moment too late, Kian also noticed the sound, but it was too late to deflect the incoming arrow.
However, the Windsong Blade on the young warrior monk’s back let out a hum, deflecting the arrow.
”──────!”
”The magic language of ‘Acceleration’!”
The shaft of the thick arrow that had pierced the ground was crudely engraved with orange ancient elven script.
”Huh? What…what is this?”
The Insect Master looked bewildered.
The incoming magic arrow, based on its trajectory, was aimed at the man’s back.
”It’s an enemy. You’re being targeted,”
He said, reaching for the Windsong Blade on his back.
In the gaps between the green leaves of the trees.
A patch of bright blue sky peeked through, glinting for a moment.
A whoosh of wind followed, closing in instantly.
It was an impressive shot, but unfortunately, no projectile could do its job against the superior performance of Kian’s magic sword.
A white wind swirled around the Insect Master, deflecting the magic arrow as it passed through the leaves, causing it to explode in mid-air.
”The magic language of ‘Blast’! They seem intent on killing us!”
”No problem. As long as I have this sword, we’re safe.”
He drew the magic sword from its sheath in one swift motion.
The sword, with its many holes, sucked in the surrounding air, and a wailing blast ensued.
Another magic arrow was fired at Kian, but of course, there was no need to even deflect it.
Seeing the magic arrow being blown up again, the murderous intent directed at them clearly wavered.
(They’ve given up sniping. They must be planning to approach us.)
”Serena.”
”Mm. I’ll fight too.”
”No, you take him and retreat from the forest. Hand over the suspect alive to Baron Waterman by any means necessary.”
”But!”
”Just do it, now! I’ll take care of this! No, let me handle this!”
His tone was firm.
Goosebumps rose as an overwhelming presence approached from beyond the forest.
The enemy had stopped concealing their magic power upon reaching this place.
They were here to kill.
(Judging by the situation, it’s either ‘Scorpion’ or someone connected to ‘Scorpion’.)
