The designated meeting spot was a high-class bar on the upper floors of Vitz, a quiet and secluded area. Since I had passed by here during the day, I didn’t get lost.
The designated spot was the rooftop terrace seat. With the gas lamps lighting it up, the atmosphere was quite good.
Isabella was already seated at the terrace. After confirming that there was no one around, I revealed myself.
”You’re here.”
Isabella raised an eyebrow. Yeah, she’s still wary of me in this state.
”Did I keep you waiting?”
”No, it’s fine. No problem. Right on time.”
On the table, there were ham, cheese, cold dishes, and a wine bottle. This was the first time I’d had a meeting with Isabella where we’d be having a drink and eating like this.
What’s her intention, I wonder?
Please spare me from any unnecessary trouble.
”I was worried when I didn’t hear from you. I’m glad you didn’t stand me up.”
”There’s a slight inconvenience, so please bear with me. This is outside of our usual territory, after all.”
I shrugged and took a seat.
”How’s the Golden Crab?”
”They’re not showing their tail. They’re on high alert.”
Isabella picked up the wine bottle and quickly opened it. She poured some into her glass and then turned to me.
”Want some?”
”No thanks. I don’t drink alcohol on the job.”
I’m not saying I don’t trust Isabella, but being drunk would hinder my magic abilities. Just in case, I shouldn’t be drinking.
As if she had anticipated my response, Isabella started pouring wine into her glass.
”I’ll have some.”
”Nice perk.”
”It’s cheap wine. The grilled fish skewers we had for lunch were more expensive.”
Isabella answered with a straight face. There’s no reason to lie. It’s really cheap, after all.
”The prices at Vitz are outrageous. It’s summer vacation, so everything is expensive.”
”Haha, it’s tough being a public servant, isn’t it? The expenses are a real burden.”
”Our expenses depend on how well we work, you know.”
Isabella poured herself some wine and started eating ham.
After that, Isabella and I exchanged information and reviewed the current situation. Then, Isabella’s face turned red as she turned to me.
”We’ll adjust our strategy a bit according to the top’s policy. Our goal was to annihilate Golden Crab, but we’ve decided not to go that far.”
”Really?”
”Time is running out. We can’t leave the capital empty. If we catch their leader and deal a blow to their funding, that’ll be good enough.”
”That sounds simple.”
”I’ve seen the letter you wrote. If we use reconciliation as bait, they’ll have no choice but to show themselves. I think the success rate is high, don’t you?”
”As long as it’s not a trap.”
I emphasized my concerns.
While it’s true that the police are in a tough spot, there’s still danger lurking.
In the underground world, it’s crucial not to show any openings. Especially with someone we don’t know well, with neither face nor name….
”…It’s a cautious thing to do.”
”I don’t intend to disappoint, but… I’ll make sure to follow the proper procedures.”
Isabella took a big gulp of wine with a carefree laugh.
”Well, that’s fine. If there’s any progress, I’ll let you know.”
”I’ll also investigate Golden Crab. For now, we’ll use reconciliation as bait… If we find any other leads, that’d be great, but…”
”Yeah. But if the situation changes, we might show an opening.”
And with that, our meeting came to a close.
It wasn’t a particularly meaningful discussion, but it was also about building trust.
Isabella is super popular with the townspeople, and I think she’ll keep getting more famous from now on. As for me, I’ve got no choice but to stick with her and see how things go.
By the way, we do have a bit of a physical connection going on…
The meeting ended, and I left the terrace. I could’ve gone back to the hotel, but I decided to observe Isabella from a distance instead.
”Phew…”
Isabella called her assistant over and started sharing the leftover ham and crackers. Yeah, it wouldn’t be a loss to leave the food behind anyway.
I thought I wouldn’t have to do much, but Isabella ended up drinking a lot of wine and getting wasted.
Then, after a while, Isabella stumbled out of the bar. She was heading towards the main road. Maybe she was going back to her place or going to drink some more somewhere else.
”Okay…”
There’s a bit of risk involved, but I think I can handle meeting up with Isabella now.
This is just a small incident during my training camp. Maybe I can even find out her true intentions or part of her plan.
I took off my disguise and followed the route that would put me in Isabella’s path.
The important thing is to act natural.
I kept my eyes scanning the area, trying to look like a tourist.
I was confident about this part.
Finally, I entered Isabella’s line of sight.
”What…?”
Isabella was the one who spoke up.
It looks like she noticed me just like I planned.
”Huh? Miss Isabella…?”
I tried my best to act like I just happened to run into her.
She was drunk from the alcohol, and her purple tail was swaying happily――I didn’t miss that.
