Chapter 139 Sincerity And Secrets
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”I’m just continuing my old job, that’s all. No adventures or anything. It’s not that I’m doing well, it’s just that I’m stuck in a rut.”
I said with a laugh, trying to brush it off lightly.
”You’re getting along well with the police, aren’t you?”
”Haha, I wouldn’t dare to fight against the police. It’s pointless to go against those above me.”
Neevas pressed on further.
”I’m envious. We, on the other hand, have gotten into trouble with the police.”
”Really? Is that why you’re offering to make amends?”
”You’re quick to catch on. Yeah, we’ve been investigated in various ways, and our movements are being restricted. Even our subordinates are getting cold feet. At this rate, we’ll be wiped out.”
”That’s…”
I stroked my chin. Neevas’s composure was still intact. This story was probably half true and half false.
It was certain that the Golden Crab’s subordinates were intimidated by the police’s pressure, and they had no choice but to proceed with caution.
However, according to the documents from Isabella, we still had a ways to go before we could deal a significant blow to the Golden Crab. If they were going to be eliminated soon, she wouldn’t have relied on me either.
In essence, Neevas was just pretending to show a weakness that wasn’t there. I shrugged my shoulders.
”I want to help, but the capital and Vitz are too far apart, making it difficult.”
”――Would it be by railroad to get here?”
”Yes, it would take around half a day.”
”That’s true, the distance is a problem. That’s why misunderstandings are born…”
”…”
”Misfortunes have also led to misunderstandings between Midnight Fangs and us. And even now, the distance and misunderstandings remain… aren’t they?”
”This territory was trashed by you, you know. And this time’s mess is also because you stuck your hands in where they didn’t belong.”
”This is harsh, isn’t it?”
”Do you think I don’t know anything? Like the son of a big corporation. You’re moving too big. If you go that far, even the police won’t give up easily.”
I hinted at Sword without saying it out loud. As expected, Neevas’s eyes narrowed for a moment. He quickly returned to his gentle face, though.
”…I’m surprised. You knew that much, huh?”
”You’re not going to make things easy for us, are you? We came here to make things clear.”
”Make things clear, you say? Does that mean…there’s a seed of hope?”
”It depends on your sincerity.”
There’s a way to get information.
If I just let Neevas ride roughshod over us here, I might not even be able to reach the organization’s boss or their headquarters. We’d just exchange apologies and be done with it.
In other words, I need to make them struggle a bit more. I need to make them show me their hand, or else I won’t be able to move forward.
”We can arrange for some cash or real estate.”
”If that’s all you’re offering, we wouldn’t have come this far.”
”What do you want, then?”
”You came to negotiate with me, but you’re not showing me anything. If you’re not reliable, we can’t make any guarantees.”
I glanced around the warehouse on purpose.
”This place is just a makeshift meeting spot, isn’t it? In reality, do you have any solid proof that you’re Golden Crab?”
”Are you doubting that much?”
Neevas let out a bitter laugh.
”You should know that. Money and real estate are just nice to have, but in the end, what’s left is trust and information.”
”…I agree. Trust, indeed. Your words about showing proof are spot on.”
Neevas stood up.
”I didn’t plan on revealing this much tonight, but making amends with Midnight Fangs is a top priority. Please, this way.”
He urged me to get up, and I followed him out of the warehouse.
…It’s still okay. I don’t sense any magic or ominous atmosphere.
The place we were guided to was a pier deeper in the warehouse district, where ordinary people couldn’t enter.
As we approached cautiously, I saw a medium-sized passenger ship docked at the pier. It was about 100 meters long (≈328 feet long).
The two-story passenger ship was quite impressive. It could probably hold several hundred people, including crew and passengers. And I could sense the presence of people and magic.
There were people on board, not just an empty ship.
”This is one of our ships, the Crimson Club.”
”…I see, that’s quite something.”
The reason Isabella’s elite police team, led by her, couldn’t even get a glimpse of the Golden Crab’s tail was because their big operation was taking place on this ship.
”Tonight, our event is about to begin. Would you like to join us and take a look…?”
It was an intriguing offer. Now that I’ve seen this ship, I don’t want to leave.
I wonder what kind of structure it has inside. What kind of work are they doing? My curiosity is endless. ――This is interesting.
