Dark Noble 73

Chapter 73 A Rainy Day’s Curtain

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Monday. The season was gradually taking on the colors of summer. The trees’ greenery was lush, and then it rained. The royal capital rarely saw rain or snow. Only June and September were exceptions.

So, when I woke up and looked outside, it was raining. The sound of raindrops hitting the roof and windows was loud.

 ”It’s already this season…”

In this world, umbrellas had already become widespread, just like in modern times. So, there was no inconvenience.

I took an umbrella and left the mansion, heading to the academy.

 ”…It’s quiet, isn’t it?”

I wondered if it was just my imagination that there were fewer people around. Maybe the people who were enthusiastic about Lizaro’s incident didn’t feel like going out on a rainy day.

After attending classes, I headed to the student council room in the evening. There were even fewer people there. In fact, only Lana was present.

”Hello. It feels like the entire academy is deserted, doesn’t it?”

”Hello, Alba. Yeah… but maybe it’s just that people from outside the academy aren’t visiting. We’ve had a lot of visitors lately.”

Lana hinted that she was lucky it was raining today, and she was diligently working on paperwork.

Of course, I helped her with that too. Thanks to yesterday’s incident with Meer, I could face my work with a clear mind.

After finishing our work, I turned to Lana.

”…So, President, about the other day…”

 ”Yeah, how was it…?”

 ”It was okay.”

 ”Really…?! Thank you!”

”But first, I want to take a look at various documents, like medical records and diaries…anything related to the illness of the 2 of them.”

”They’re at the mansion. We’ve also looked for doctors here…”

”…The results weren’t good, were they?”

 ”Yeah…the outcome was almost nothing.”

Ugh. I knew I wanted to cling to any hope, but it seemed impossible. I didn’t think I could be of any help, especially when the royal capital’s doctors couldn’t make a breakthrough.

”At least, we’ll examine the documents as soon as they arrive. Is that okay?”

”Of course, yes… Thank you, Alba!”

Lana nodded deeply. Her face showed a strong determination to think of her father and brother, who were suffering from the epidemic.

I’m someone who’s been reborn into a mafia family, carrying memories from my past life… That’s why I want to get my hands on Lana so badly.

After finishing my work in the student council room, I headed to White Lily Cafe on foot, taking a stroll.

Compared to other places, the umbrellas here are colorful and stylish. I gazed absent-mindedly at the water flowing through the old drainage ditch, making my way through the bustling streets.

 ”I’ve been waiting for you.”

When I arrived at White Lily Cafe, Claire greeted me politely, dressed in her usual white-based maid uniform.

 ”I came about that matter…”

 ”Thank you. Please, this way.”

She efficiently led me to the reception room without wasting any time. The rain still hadn’t stopped. Since the reception room wasn’t for customers from the “red-light district,” it had a very classic interior design. The black and brown decorations gave off a sense of luxury, and the atmosphere was so different that I couldn’t help but glance back at the entrance.

”Don’t mind the atmosphere. This is also my workplace.”

”Is that so? It looks like an office…”

”There’s also the matter of cleaning, so we’ve closed off those rooms.”

I nodded in understanding. It was about cost-cutting, after all. There were several bookshelves and cabinets on the walls of the reception room. I could do my office work here too.

I handed Claire the reports from Belzeda and Meer, and told her about the various matters. First, we had to be positive about investing, but we’d have to do it indirectly…

”Also, can I see the financial documents and other papers? Do you have connections with insurance companies and tax accountants?”

 ”Of course. I’ve prepared them.”

Claire took out a large envelope from a locked cabinet in the reception room. She was well-prepared.

”White Lily Cafe is an old establishment in the entertainment district, and we can get backing from various aspects. If there’s anything lacking, please let me know.”

”Got it. I’ll confirm it quickly. Then, about the trademan who come in, our connection with them is old. You can trust them.”

”…Just to be sure, may I ask their name?”

”It’s Meer, a female foxkin moneylender with a shop on Amber Street.”

 ”Ah…I see, it’s that person.”

 ”Do you know?”

”I don’t have any connections. When I was in financial trouble, I investigated the financial institutions. That person is honest and serious… mainly dealing with noble clients, that’s all.”

”I see, that’s right. Her main business is lending money to nobles, after all. It’s a different industry.”

”It’s not a problem if it’s Lady Meer. Rather, it’s unexpected… that she has a connection with you.”

 I stared at Claire intensely.

 ”Don’t pry too much.”

 ”I apologize for the rudeness.”

Claire bowed her head. Her head is good, but that’s a problem too… I’ll overlook it this much, though.

”And about the police, let’s get to the point. But if it’s really a murder case――”

’I apologize!’ ‘She has a guest!’ ‘Lady Claire can’t attend your visit!’

 What’s going on?

The outside of the reception room is noisy.

 ”…It seems like a visitor.”

The sound of footsteps echoed, and the noise approached the reception room. Oh boy, it won’t stop.

But amidst the noise, I sensed the reason. The ones advancing down the corridor were magicians. Multiple ones, at that ―― it’s almost impossible for ordinary people to stop them.

They’re trying to barge into the reception room by force. What a lawless person.

”I apologize. Please wait for a moment.”

 ”Ah, I don’t mind…”

As expected, Claire intervened. The center of the commotion had already reached just outside the reception room. Claire’s response calmed the situation a bit.

”I apologize. But I’ve already responded in writing about the repayment.”

”That’s invalid! Hand over the goods immediately!”

 ”Don’t be unreasonable. That’s my father’s precious…”

”That has nothing to do with me!”

The one pushing forward was a young man, judging by his voice. It’s a voice I’ve heard before, but I can’t quite place it. From the content, he’s one of the creditors of White Lily Cafe.

Still, he’s being quite forceful. His voice can be heard all the way here. What kind of guy is he?

I, who had become interested, quietly observed the situation outside the reception room door. There, I realized. The man who pushed forward ―― isn’t he one of Isabella’s marriage candidates?
