Chapter 50

””Release!””
*Boom!*
As Iris said those words, flames shot out from her fingertips.
The fire flew straight toward the target she was pointing at and ignited whatever was in its path.
That was… the result of the men who had attacked us.
The men had charged at us with great energy, but while they were talking, I had set up a magic thread, and they ended up lying on the ground without moving an inch.
I really didn’t want to smash their heads, so I took them out by choking them instead.
Now, I was gathering their bodies in the corner of the room to burn them.
While Iris was doing that, I was watching with Seria from the opposite side of the men’s bodies.
I checked with Seria, who was watching the men burn.
”As a Cleric, is it still considered murder in situations like this?”
”Huh? No, if it’s self-defense, it’s different… legally, there’s no problem.”
”But in their case, it wasn’t self-defense, right? We could have just restrained them and handed them over to the guards.”
”Then… why were they taken care of?”
”I’m a coward. I can’t let anyone who has shown intent to kill me live.”
When I answered that, Seria smiled.
”Thank you.”
”…For what?”
”If it were you, those men would have been dealt with no matter how many times they came. In other words… it’s for me and Ms. Iris, right?”
Did she notice?
But that’s not the only reason, so I corrected her.
”To be precise, it’s a bit different. I also don’t like being put in a bad mood because of them.”
”I see… It seems like it’s good to just trust you after all~♪.”
Even though I said I didn’t like it, for some reason, Seria seemed even more motivated.
Is it because she gained confidence that she would be protected?
It looks like she’s trying to completely rely on me mentally.
Well… it wouldn’t be good for her to me stubbornly refuse and then worry about being abandoned someday…
”…If you feel like it.”
When I said that, Seria immediately replied while lifting up her chest.
”Then, I’ll make you feel like it~♪.”
”…”
That was quick.
Of course, for now, I’ll just watch.
As I was looking at her, Iris returned after finishing off the men.
”I’m done for now. It will still take some time for the equipment to disappear, though.”
Hearing that, I looked at the spot where the men’s bodies were… there were a few charred bodies with several slimes attached to them.
Since they were being burned to hide their identities, I guess there’s no need to watch until the slimes finish digesting them.
There didn’t seem to be any special equipment, and if someone came here, they wouldn’t know about those guys.
Now, the little problem is what to do with the money they had…
I’ve heard that intentionally damaging money is a crime in this country, so I consulted the two about what to do with it.
”They say that when slimes digest money in a dungeon, it gets stored somewhere inside the dungeon. But in that case, money will disappear from this country for a while, and basically, we are told to recover it.”
It was Seria who said that, explaining that the country would have trouble if money disappeared, even if just for a while.
So, it seems that the law says we should avoid losing money in dungeons as much as possible.
”Is that so?”
As I was thinking that it made sense, Seria continued speaking.
”Well, basically, there aren’t many people who would just leave money behind and go home.”
”That’s true.”
”So, what are you going to do?”
Iris’s question caught me a bit off guard.
It was the same with her; I really didn’t want to use the money I got from killing someone.
If you asked me why, I could only say it was a matter of feelings.
So, since it wasn’t that much money anyway, I decided to give it to Seria.
”Is that okay?”
”It seems like they were targeting you the most. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to split today’s earnings evenly.”
She was surprised by that statement.
”Wait, evenly?”
”Huh? Do you want more?”
”N-No! I mean, it’s too much. Even with what we’ve earned so far, the magic stones are quite a lot, and if we split that, it would be a significant amount…”
”Even if you say that, it’s the rule we’ve set.”
”Is Ms. Iris okay with that? Your share will be quite reduced, you know?”
”It’s fine. It’s not that I don’t care about money, but in terms of roles, I’m the same as you.”
”Uh, okay… then…”
Once Seria realized that Iris had no objections to the arrangement, she seemed satisfied and put the men’s money into her bag.
With that, the incident of the attack was settled, and we quickly finished our meal before resuming our hunt.
* * *
A few hours later.
The wooden box on the cart I was pulling was almost full of magic stones, and considering the amount of torches we had used, it seemed like a good time to return to the city.
As we made our way back, the sound of the wooden cart clattering along filled the air. Two people sat on top of it, engaged in a lively conversation.
”I mean… it was quite the ‘task’, wasn’t it?”
”Yes, indeed. But that doesn’t necessarily make it easy, though.”
”Well, with the number of times we had to collect, it’s bound to be tiring. But it’s definitely a relief that it’s not as dangerous.”
”That’s true. Well, since we’re getting paid for this, I guess we should give it our all physically…”
”Oh, about that… I’d like to participate too, Ms. Iris.”
”You don’t need my permission, do you?”
”Oh, I don’t? So, do you have plans with him for tonight… or is any time good for you?”
”That depends on Mose, but… are you experienced?”
”No, I’m not… Is that a problem?”
”That’s not what I meant. I was with Mose for the first time too, you know.”
”Then what did you mean?”
”There’s someone at the inn who can teach you various things, so I thought I could introduce you if you need it.”
”Er, you mean in practice…?”
”It’s just an act, so it’s fine. You know, like how to move your tongue or your hips… and it’s not like it’s with a man anyway.”
”Oh, I see. I’ve heard about it, but I’ve always wondered how it actually works.”
”Well, I think it’s better to be completely clueless the first time. It’s a one-time thing, after all.”
”Oh, that’s true. Someone once told me that it’s best to experience something for the first time without any prior knowledge.”
”That’s why I said if you need it. Mose enjoys pleasing me, but I feel bad just enjoying it without giving back.”
”I see… So, is it that enjoyable?”
”When I’m doing it, I feel like I’m losing my mind. I probably make the most ridiculous faces.”
”Wow, is it that intense?”
”Well, if that’s what Mose enjoys, then you should just embrace being silly without holding back.”
”I’m a little scared, though…”
”Well, if it’s going to be like that, then maybe you should just stop if you’re scared?”
”…Are you maybe wanting to keep the fun all to yourself?”
”Not really like that…”
”Really?”
”…Just a little.”
”Hehe~♪.”
”Ugh… You’ll probably end up like this too.”
”When that happens, please laugh just like this~♪.”
As I listened to that conversation, I noticed more people around since we entered the 1st District.
Many were returning to the city, talking about their plans for later.
Noticing this, Iris, who had gotten off the cart to avoid standing out, checked with me about our plans.
”Mose. We’re going to the place where we sort the magic stones, right? Are you sure we don’t need to go?”
”…(nods).”
Since there were so many people, I couldn’t speak out loud, so I turned around and nodded before facing forward again.
It was planned to ask the orphanage to sort the magic stones, but because of Frederica’s situation, I decided to go alone.
I didn’t know what kind of conversation it would lead to, and if I needed to tell Iris and the others, I could do that later.
As for today’s earnings… there were too many people around, and since we had the cart, I couldn’t return to “Koji,” so I couldn’t withdraw money from the guild. For now, I handed them each 100,000 Oar.
I had explained to them the pace of exchanging the magic stones for money, and once the exchange was done, Iris’s share would go to her account, while I would deliver Seria’s share to her.
Since I didn’t know what would happen in the future, I decided to handle it this way for now.
* * *
*Buzzing…*
When I stepped out of the dungeon, the city streets were filled with the evening glow, bustling with adventurers who had also just come out of the dungeon.
In the midst of that, Iris and Seria moved away from me.
”Well then, see you later. You can come back whenever you want.”
”Then, I will report back to the church, Ms. Iris. I’m going home today, but… I will definitely be a help to you someday.”
Saying that, both of them left with excited expressions.
While I was worried about Iris getting involved with another guy, at least Seria, dressed as a cleric, was heading to the church.
But, well, if there are a lot of people around, they probably won’t do anything reckless, and even if they tried to force something, help would likely come.
That’s what the red scarf is for, after all.
Personally, I thought it would be better to make it a rule to not wear it when you don’t want to be approached… but I heard from various women that if they forgot to wear it when a guy they didn’t like approached them, they wouldn’t have an excuse.
It seems that when this habit started, it was the opposite. Guys didn’t feel good if a girl hurriedly took it off when refusing, and that often led to trouble.
On the other hand, if a girl hurriedly put it on, it was usually seen as a reasonable reaction, so that’s how the current habit came to be.
That way, it’s harder to tell if someone was rejected or if they really just forgot to wear it, which probably reduces the chances of trouble.
Hmm.
Even if she wears the red scarf, remembering Iris taking it off when inviting me… I think that gesture is also nice.
Yeah, it’s probably better to wear it when you don’t want to be approached.
Reaching that conclusion, I nodded to myself and pulled the cart towards the orphanage.
