Chapter 60

”Well then, I’m heading to my usual duties.”
”Okay, thank you for your hard work.”
The female staff member who guided me said she was a direct subordinate of Ms. Wendy, and she acted as if I was just a regular customer while leading me to Ms. Wendy’s room.
It seems that Ms. Wendy received a message from Frederica early in the morning and was giving instructions to welcome me.
She looked like she was in armor, but the strong impression of Ms. Wendy dressed as a staff member from last time stuck in my mind.
After she left, it was just me and Ms. Wendy in the room.
”Please, have a seat.”
”Yes.”
Since I had already revealed to her that I could speak, I responded normally and sat facing her on the sofa across the table… and we started to confirm the current situation.
”Um, Mrs. Frederica said…”
”You are saying that after sorting the magic stones you earned at the orphanage, you will collect them for delivery, right?”
It seems that what I discussed with Frederica yesterday was clearly communicated, and it became a matter of how Ms. Wendy would judge that.
”It’s a convenient arrangement for both sides, but… I heard that you are registered with the Adventurers’ Guild under a different name, correct? It might make it harder to raise your evaluation from the guild, but is that okay with you?”
So Frederica conveyed that much.
Well, it was probably necessary to leave the tax matters to Ms. Wendy.
”Yeah, I don’t really have a reason to want to raise my rank.”
I registered with the Adventurers’ Guild so that it wouldn’t seem strange for me to go to dungeons just for the magic stones.
So, in response to me, Ms. Wendy continued to ask.
”Well then, you will be paying taxes here as a different person… Are you okay with that?”
”Yes. I think I can earn enough to handle that.”
Since I would be paying taxes for both “Koji” at the Adventurer’s Guild and “Mose” at “Hooters,” this was brought up as a financial concern.
I’m not sure what will happen deeper in the dungeon, but at least if I hunt in the 3rd District alone, I should be able to earn without any issues.
I plan to go deeper for Iris’s errands, so I think my hunting in the shallow areas will decrease… but I’ve heard from Ms. Monoka that as long as I deliver a sufficient amount of magic stones, it’s okay if the delivery intervals are a bit longer.
For the orphanage, having a stable income is what matters, so it seems I can decide my delivery pace freely.
However… Ms. Wendy showed a subtle expression in response to my answer.
”Is there a problem?”
”No, it’s just… you seem quite confident, but since we don’t know your abilities, I’m curious about the basis for that confidence.”
”Ah, I see.”
There are probably quite a few people who overestimate their abilities or exaggerate to promote themselves.
Especially in a big merchant guild, there might be countless people trying to sell themselves like that for job opportunities.
Last time, I was introduced by Frederica, and since I was in the position of a customer, Ms. Wendy agreed to a special deal… but she probably didn’t evaluate my abilities at all.
It’s just…
”I’ve delivered quite a lot of magic stones to that orphanage, you know?”
”Yes, I understand that. That’s why we were planning to accept Ms. Frederica’s proposal. However… if we are to proceed with the tax procedures here, it will appear as if we are hiring you, so I would like you to demonstrate your abilities accordingly.”
With that, she stood up and returned with some documents and writing tools from her desk.
”Here is the contract. You will be employed in a position to deliver magic stones and other items to our merchant guild as ‘Mose.’ Before you sign this, I would like to see your skills…”
As Ms. Wendy said this, she stared at me intently.
”…”
I could understand the situation.
It’s natural for an employer to assess a potential employee’s abilities before assigning them work.
Even if I have a record of delivering magic stones, it could be that I just brought them from somewhere else, which doesn’t really show my true abilities.
Hmm…
Considering my relationship with Frederica, I’m not trying to do anything bad on her, but if this contract goes through, she would, in a way, become an accomplice.
Then, like the other parties involved, I could reveal that my power is “Magic Mending,” which manipulates magic threads.
Thinking that, I lifted the feather pen on the table with my magic thread.
”Whoa!?”
Ms. Wendy was surprised by the suddenly floating pen.
I decided to ask her.
”How about this?”
”Is it okay to touch it?”
”Go ahead.”
The pen was hanging from a magic thread, and unlike when it was fixed in the air, touching the tip of the pen wouldn’t stab you.
So, I nodded to Ms. Wendy, who was surprised by the floating pen, and she reached out for it.
*Twitch*
*Sway…*
”…”
*Sway…*
Ms. Wendy, staring at the swaying pen, grabbed it once it stopped moving and started to feel around it.
From the movement when she touched it, she probably realized that the pen was hanging by a thread or something.
Before long, she found the invisible thread by feeling for it and lightly pulled on it while asking me a question.
*Pull, pull…*
”Is this… a thread?”
”Yes, it is.”
”Why is it invisible?”
”It’s a thread made from magic power.”
”Oh, I see… magic power itself has no color.”
Ms. Wendy continued to play with the invisible thread.
The fact that she didn’t question the ability to create a thread from magic is probably because this is a world with magic and skills, and she was actually touching it right now.
*Pull, pull…*
”…It’s thin, but it seems strong. You can control this freely, right?”
”Yes, but be careful. Just like normal thread, it can cut depending on the target.”
With those words, she realized something.
”Could it be that this thread can cut monsters?”
”Well, for something with bones… my fighting style is to restrain the limbs and split the head with an axe.”
In reality, I could just cut and kill them directly, but if people thought I could handle any monster that way, I’d be in trouble if they told me to go hunt specific monsters.
Being part of “Hooters” is to carry out the exchange of magic stones in a way that outsiders can’t see. Since I’m basically unable to take orders because I’m aiming for magic items that can break curses.
So, I’ll say that the strength of this thread is just enough to restrain the target, but…
”…Is that really true?”
Ms. Wendy says this with a furrowed brow.
She’s really suspicious.
Well, if she’s a businessperson, she probably deals with a lot of negotiations, so she might be used to psychological battles and can easily notice hidden things.
That said, I can’t tell her the whole truth that I haven’t even shared with Iris and the others, so I guess I’ll just pretend to confess everything by saying that I can make armor with this thread, just like them.
”Wow… is this it? It really feels strange. You can even change the color?”
”Yeah. I made this armor with magic thread.”
I extend my arm covered in Magic Armor and tell Ms. Wendy, who is touching it to feel the texture.
To prove it’s made with magic, I show her by changing part of my arm to a different color.
If it has the strength to be used as armor, she might think it could cut through monsters, but I’ve said it’s usable as armor because of its thickness, so it should be fine.
”I see. If you can control magic thread, then you can control this armor in the same way. That means it’s almost weightless.”
”Almost? I’d say it’s completely weightless.”
She nods at my reply.
”Since it’s made of magic, if you can control it freely and it has decent strength, then it must be very convenient as armor.”
*Rubbing…*
Ms. Wendy runs her hand over the surface of the Magic Armor, trying to check its hardness.
*Grip, grip…*
Perhaps to gain more strength, she stood up and leaned forward, trying to crush my arms.
Her posture caused her chest to be pulled by gravity while also being pushed together by her arms, accentuating its shape. With every movement, I could see her chest swaying from the slight opening at her neckline.
It’s natural for me to be drawn to such feminine features, noticing the differences between men and women.
It’s similar to how one’s attention is drawn to unique clothing rather than ordinary attire.
And when movement is involved, it further captures my attention, making it inevitable to notice such aspects even in a place like this.
Alright, I’ve successfully justified myself.
As I was thinking this, she returned to her seat, smiled, and pointed to the contract.
”I believe I understand your abilities to a certain extent. As stated in this contract, there is a probationary period, but… depending on the quantity of magic stones delivered, we can consider direct employment without the need for a trial period.”
According to the contract, there is a one-month probationary period during which either party can terminate the employment relationship.
”I think it’s rare for the employee to bring up such a termination…”
”Yes, but in this store’s case, the female staff uniforms are tight and accentuate the body shape. Even with consent, there have been cases where issues arise due to the uniform, leading to resignations.”
”Issues… Are they related to the men outside the store?”
Even today, several men were loitering around the store, and I thought they had too much free time on their hands.
When I asked if they had caused any trouble in the store, it seemed I was right.
”Yes, some customers assume we are selling our bodies and try to negotiate prices. We have scarves to cover up, but if they persistently invite us, we refuse their entry.”
Ms. Wendy pointed to the red scarf wrapped around her neck while saying that.
After hearing this, I suggested a very obvious improvement.
”How about making the uniforms… just regular ones?”
”Then it would just become an ordinary shop. The location isn’t that bad, but that alone won’t attract customers from other shops. Only a few people are drawn in forcefully, and considering the number of male adventurers in this city, it’s better to keep things as they are.”
”I see. So you’re also providing an easy period for employees to quit.”
”Yes. We’ve set the pay considering that, and we’ve included in the contract that we’ll introduce safe properties for those who want to rent a room. We believe we’re being quite considerate.”
”Well, I understand that. The fact that you’ew responding to Frederica’s request, which doesn’t really benefit you, shows your sincerity towards your promises.”
Ms. Wendy’s eyebrows moved slightly at my words.
Did I say something wrong?
”…Is something the matter?”
”No, it’s nothing. Now, about the contract…”
”Ah, yes. I would like to proceed with the contract.”
”That’s great. Please write your name on the contract.”
”Yes. By the way, is it okay to use ‘Mose’ for this contract?”
”Yes. This contract is specifically for the employment agreement between ‘Hooters’ and you, ‘Mose.’.”
With that, I signed the contract, and “Mose” became a mercenary affiliated with “Hooters.”
