Volume 1 Chapter 4 Adventurers’ Guild

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 I arrived on the hilltop.

Made it just in time; the sun hasn’t set yet.

The view of the golden wheat fields shining in the sunset is breathtaking, like a panorama that would attract tourists from all over the world, but first, I need to report my quest.

The guild hall is a huge building, big enough to fit a soccer field, and it looks like a single story, but it’s actually 2 stories tall.

To be precise, it’s the Toyoata village branch of the Adventurer’s Guild.

When villagers talk about the guild, they mean this building.

The grand door at the front is usually closed, so I enter through the small door beside it.

The entrance is impressively spacious, with a spiral staircase that goes up to the second floor, but that floor is off-limits to anyone not related to the guild.

To the right is the dining hall, and to the left is the equipment shop.

For some reason, whenever I come, both places are always “closed for preparation.”

Since it’s late, there’s no one around.

Well, this guild is usually quiet; I’ve never seen more than ten people here at once.

In the entrance, there’s a folding screen with wheels that has papers listing quests posted on it.

The paper feels cheap, like straw paper, and the writing is terrible.

The pen gets caught easily and rips, while the ink blurs all over the place.

To be honest, I hardly remember the writing in this world, so I leave all reading and writing to Ms. Nina.

Ms. Nina can write beautifully, even on this kind of paper.

Well, she’s Ms. Nina after all.

I depend on her too much, so I never learn the letters, but the situation with reading and writing is a bit complicated.

The reason summoned heroes can chat normally with the inhabitants of this world is thanks to a skill called Mind Communication.

Ms. Nina explained the Mind Communication skill to me, but it’s still difficult, and I only understood half of it.

I think the concept of “word spirits” is key, but in the end, I really don’t get it.

For now, I’ve decided to think of it as a magical effect similar to a futuristic, convenient translator konjac that appears in certain manga.

This Mind Communication skill allows me to talk even with spirits that don’t understand human language, but it doesn’t work on written text.

To learn how to read and write here, you can’t just memorize the characters; you’ve got to learn the whole language from scratch without relying on any magic tricks.

When I realized this, I lost half my motivation to study.

There are over a hundred main languages spoken in this world, 4 systems of 26 characters, and even 5 systems of 7 ancient scripts.

So, I decided to leave it all to Ms. Nina.

By the way, Ms. Nina──or rather, her original, Princess Auroora──

is said to understand over 30 languages, almost all current scripts, and 3 types of ancient writing,

and she can even read the alphabet from Earth.

Every time I hear stories like this, I feel like a slouch, and I just want to nod and brush it off with a “Yeah, yeah.”

It’s like a kick in the pants for someone who hasn’t tried hard enough.

Princess Auroora apparently studied hard from a young age to go on adventures with the hero.

She must have gone through a lot that I can’t even imagine.

 I really respect that.

The talent she earned through her efforts has helped countless summoned heroes because it was copied into mass-produced princess dolls.

The only copy of Princess Auroora I know is Ms. Nina, but since she’s number 217, there must be a lot more out there.

You could say the princess’s efforts paid off.

I hope she’s smiling under the shade of the grass.

 Huh?

 Did Princess Auroora pass away?

I sort of thought of her as a fairy-tale princess, but I heard the dolls started being made about ten years ago.

Ms. Nina looks like she’s under 20.

 Maybe around 17?

I can’t even imagine how they copy a human into a doll, but if Ms. Nina looks 17, that means Princess Auroora was 17 when the copy was made.

I don’t know the exact date the copy was made, but we can narrow it down to the past ten years.

That means Princess Auroora would be between 17 and 27 years old now.

 She’s still alive, then.

I’d like to meet her someday.

…Anyway, I’m fully relying on Ms. Nina for reading and writing.

But I learned how to read and write numbers too.

There are only ten types of Lars numbers, from 0 to 9.

Four-base currency isn’t so rare, but I can leave that to Ms. Nina.

Since it’s just before closing time, there aren’t many quests left posted.

At the end of the hall is the reception counter.

There are 6 windows, but only one is being used.

Right now, there’s no one at that one window.

I can’t see because of the partition, but maybe someone’s working in the back.

I can half see a table where they’re sorting herbs.

I ring the bell on the counter.

I wait for a while, but no one comes, so I ring it again.

 …

 …

 …

 The sun is already setting.

I have some urgent reasons, so I keep ringing the bell before they close.

”It’s loud! I can hear you!”

It’s Mr. Laken, the village head and guild branch manager.

He’s a dandy old man with a distinguished bald head, and usually runs the guild mostly by himself.

Mr. Laken’s son-in-law is the priest at the church right next to the guild.

So, the bald man right in front of me is the head of the ruling family in this village.

Well, to me, he’s just the old guy at the guild.

There’s probably only Mr. Laken working at this guild.

 ”So? What do you want?”

He glares at me like it’s a hassle.

He probably really finds it annoying.
