Volume 1 Chapter 7 Job Change
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Strength 7
Vitality 8
Intelligence 8
Wisdom 9
Dexterity 18
Agility 9
Charisma 8
Luck 7 + 1
These are my ability scores in this world.
Dexterity shines bright at 18, but the others are below the average for normal people.
Is this really being good at nothing?
But if the average ability is around 9 or 10, a low 7 in strength isn’t too terrible.
I’m just a little weak kid, but not so weak it stops me from living daily life.
Overall, my average is over 9, so it’s not great but not bad either──I’m just a normal guy.
To sound cool, I’m a “normal man.”
When Ms. Marsha told me my ability scores, I was disappointed by how low they were.
But I quickly told myself this isn’t a game; ability scores aren’t everything.
Even though my stats are average, I was hoping, since I was summoned as a hero, I’d get some kind of cheat or special power.
Heroes usually get cool holy swords or something, right?
So I nervously asked Ms. Marsha with hope and fear.
”Um, so… how is it really? Do you think I can manage being a hero? Besides the summoning bonus, do I get any special powers?”
Ms. Marsha was shocked by how low my stats were and started acting strange.
When she heard my question, she covered her face with both hands.
”I’m sorry, please give me a little time to think.”
She said that in a shaky voice, then ran out of the room, leaving me alone.
At that moment, I thought, “Yeah, I’m really no good.”
Seeing how flustered Ms. Marsha was made it clear she regretted summoning me.
Left alone, my eyes fell on a bright pink sticky note on the floor.
It was about 5 cm square.
It definitely didn’t belong in this world.
I couldn’t help but pick it up.
The sticky note had a quick note scribbled in pen.
”Fujioka Takuto, Ms. Marsha’s favorite”
STR 16 +4 sword 12 Ki 15 important
VIT 14 +1 Ki 15
INT 10
WIS 8 WIS done
DEX 13
AGL 16
CHA 9+1, Ms. Marsha, 25, single<important
Luck 14+6, super lucky, but I lost it!!
The person who wrote the note, Fujioka, must have been another Japanese person summoned like me.
The fact that he wrote “STR” for strength made me guess he was quite a gamer.
What shocked me was his high ability scores.
Even in his basic state, he was way more high-spec than me, and his summoning bonus was +12, reaching the max of 20 for strength and luck.
Seeing such a difference, I could only laugh.
I don’t have any cheat abilities, and I can’t go back to my original world.
I had to make up my mind to live a quiet life in this world as an ordinary person.
I decided to keep the note carefully.
If I ever meet Mr. Fujioka, I’d like to talk about Ms. Marsha’s charm.
* * *
The next day, I was summoned to the temple again.
In the same small room, just Ms. Marsha and me.
”I’m really sorry for the trouble I caused yesterday.”
Unlike her worry from the day before, Ms. Marsha was calm and confident.
”Don’t worry about it at all. You must have been surprised by my low ability, right?”
”Well, I couldn’t think of any jobs Sir Sabarois could switch to, and I didn’t know what to do. I was studying too little, so I stayed up all night researching and found several jobs that seemed to fit.”
Saying that, Ms. Marsha started spreading out a bundle of old-looking papers on the desk with confidence.
”There are 2 jobs you can switch to regardless of ability scores, and one that fits your ability scores. All 3 are legendary jobs that almost no one knows about now.”
They must have been forgotten because they weren’t useful, but that’s how it seems.
”These papers look pretty old, huh?”
”I had to search all the way to the back of the library for them. I’m glad they hadn’t been thrown away.”
Clearly, they’re not very important.
If I hadn’t been summoned, they would have been left to rot or thrown away as trash.
”I remembered hearing stories about how job change conditions used to be much easier. I was surprised to find out there were even unconditional ones.”
Ms. Marsha showed me a piece of paper, but of course, I couldn’t read it.
”The first one is this, Barbarian.”
It’s a warrior who fights with an axe.
You found something pretty terrible here.
”Compared to today’s warrior jobs, it looks pretty weak, but you can learn some martial arts skills.”
”There’s even a weird skill called Martial Language. That’s rare.”
I couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to talk with my fists.
If it were a game, playing a goofy character would be fun.
”The second one is Assassin, a thief-type job. You can learn skills like Stealth, Lockpicking, and Throwing Weapons.”
I picture an assassin as a cool, fearless killer, but doing it myself would be a whole different story.
Living in darkness and dying in darkness?
No, thank you.
”There’s also a Self-Destruct skill. Assassins are meant to be disposable, so I wouldn’t really recommend it.”
Even if someone highly recommended it, I think I’d never choose Assassin.
”The last one, Stargazer, is quite different. For the job change, you need Dexterity 16, Intelligence 8, Wisdom 8, and Luck 8.”
I definitely met the job change requirements with my ability scores.
The barriers for stats other than Dexterity are low, but since Intelligence and Wisdom are required, I guessed it was a magic-using job.
”This job seems to let you learn a wide range of basic skills from the start. You can get skills like Search, Stealth, Gathering, and Hunting. It looks like you can also learn Crafting and Astronomy skills.”
It seems plain, but the combination of those skills kind of tickled my inner fantasy.
Even if there are a lot of different skills, you might end up being just a jack-of-all-trades…
”Do you know what the Astronomy skill involves?”
When I heard Astronomy, the first thing that popped into my head was Kongming’s (Zhuge Liang) Trap.
If it’s a skill to become a genius strategist, it would be quite a find.
”There are no records of the Astronomy skill or Martial Language skill at all. Both are now considered very precious skills.”
When you say a skill is rare, it makes you want it more.
The question is whether to choose the Barbarian’s Martial Language skill or the Stargazer’s Astronomy skill.
”Is that so? This is pretty confusing.”
The Martial Language skill, from what I imagined, meant you could build friendship by fighting with your fists or something like that.
The Astronomy skill sounded like something Kōmei would have──predicting the future from the stars.
That would be super strong.
But maybe it’s actually a meteor-type attack magic.
Since I had no info, I could only guess at this point.
After thinking for a while, I chose Stargazer.
Simply because the name sounded cooler than Barbarian.
At that time, neither Ms. Marsha nor I realized that Stargazer wasn’t a fighting class.
If I’d picked Barbarian, at least I’d have had a combat job.
By the way, the Astronomy skill let you watch celestial movements.
You could even know where planets would be a year from now.
There’s that famous story of Columbus scaring natives with a solar eclipse, but sadly, the moons here are too small to block the sun.
No eclipses happen, so you can’t shock anyone with prophecy.
Still, knowing time and direction is pretty handy.
If you watch the sun or stars, you don’t need a clock.
And if you get lost, at least you know you’re lost right away.
Might be a godsend skill for sea voyages, but unfortunately, there’s no ocean nearby.
Maybe someday I’ll think of a clever way to use it.
After all, I’m just a failing hero.
I’ll take it easy and do things my own way.
