Volume 1 Chapter 12-2 Spiral Gun

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The brown quail is passive, so it won’t attack. Even if I miss, it just flies away without putting up a fight—no risk of a counterattack.

Brown quail meat is considered a premium ingredient and sells for a high price.

Its feathers are perfect for arrow fletchings, and its down can be used as filling for comforters.

Plus, there are bounties on them all year round.

For me, the brown quail is a lifeline—like a kelp forest to a koala.

Maybe I’ll just live as a quail hunter in this world.

The quail is about 30 paces away, a distance I can definitely hit now.

It doesn’t notice me—too busy pecking at fallen seeds.

There are no other quails nearby.

Just this one, strayed from the flock.

(Sorry, but you’re going to be my meal for today.)

 This is the perfect opportunity.

I might as well use it to test out a new skill.

I focus my awareness into the palm of my right hand, activating my recognition hindrance skill.

It’s a derived skill from Stealth, making the target less aware of my presence.

When combined with Optical Camouflage, it works wonders on quails.

I think my control over the skill has improved.

Maybe it’s also thanks to my dexterity.

I concentrate on gathering the skill into a lump in my hand, squeezing tightly.

I’m going to try something like what you see in anime and fighting games—focusing and shooting it out.

At least I’ve managed to condense the skill into a ball shape.

 Now, what next?

Let’s think of all the anime I’ve seen.

I’ll try spinning it—maybe that will stabilize the trajectory.

Interesting… I can speed up the spin quite a bit.

 It’s like a spiral wave.

Spiral wave bullet… Maybe that’s a bit exaggerated.

I’ll try compressing it while it’s spinning.

Now it’s like a bullet—the skill lump about the size of a chestnut.

It’s like making a gun with your hand—like kids playing “bang.”

I move the spinning skill bullet to the tip of my index finger.

 Got it.

I wonder if I can shoot it well?

Actually, I’m getting kind of excited.

I deliberately turn off my Stealth skill.

The quail hasn’t noticed me yet.

I hold my breath and quietly close the gap—without Stealth, I can still do this.

When I get about 20 meters away, the quail’s behavior shifts.

It starts looking around cautiously, but still doesn’t spot me.

I wait for it to discover me, and finally, it does.

The quail is now on edge, ready to take flight at any moment.

I fire the skill bullet I’ve prepared.

It probably doesn’t see the bullet coming, only me.

The bullet hits, and I immediately reactivate my Stealth skill.

Stealth skills are said to lose their effect once you’re discovered.

That’s how it works, at least.

In reality, once you’re spotted, no matter how much I use Stealth, it’s useless.

But… the quail in front of me seems to have lost track of me again.

It looks surprised, on high alert, but it’s completely lost sight of me.

After a while, it begins pecking at food again, as though it feels safe.

 I’m amazed.

 This… This is revolutionary!

I can use Stealth right in front of someone who recognizes me.

Isn’t this a revolution for Stealth skills?

It’s really cool, but… it feels kind of plain.

I wish the technique had a cooler name.

I take the opportunity to shoot the quail in the head, thanks to its cooperation in my experiment.

(Sorry, but I’ll gratefully take your life.)

 ”Toh, toh, toh.”

Before draining the blood, I summon a high slime using the secret technique Mr. Zenom taught me.

It sounds grand to call it a “secret technique,” but it’s no different than calling the koi in the pond.

High slimes are said to be servants of the God of Purification.

They’re found underground everywhere, and once you get used to it, they appear right away when called.

Their form is a clear green gel, and they bounce like rubber balls, much different from the squishy slime you’d expect.

I use a sickle to cut off the quail’s head and drain its blood, letting the high slime absorb it.

They say that if you throw away the blood, it leaves impurities in the earth—no good.

Apparently, ghost-type monsters can emerge from those impurities, but even I, who can’t use purification magic, have no problem as long as I summon the high slime.

It always comes right away when I call.

I’m not sure if the same solid appears every time, but some say the earth below us is made of high slimes.

 I think that’s a bit of a stretch, though.

I think about various skill names while I continue the process of bleeding the quail.

Names for skills and techniques seem pretty important.

They seem tied to the power of words.

Names associated with myths, strong creatures, heroes, and the like are more effective if they sound cool.

In short, it’s a test of the naming person’s “chuuni” (power).

The skill name “Radar Scan” isn’t very cool, but I think clarity is important too.

Radar… spiral… something like “Spiral Gun” sounds cooler, but what do you think?
