Volume 3 Chapter 7 Souvenir Quest: Part II

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The next stop is definitely Mr. Munin the leatherworker.

There’s also the consultation about the horse gear for Ms. Claire and I want to talk about the chest protector for archery too.

The thing is, I’ve never done archery, but I know those girls in the archery club with big chests wear leather chest protectors.

In this world, bows are the main weapon for long-range attacks, and it’s not like there are no female warriors.

I think it wouldn’t be weird if there was a chest protector for women, but sadly, Mr. Munin didn’t know about it.

Still, he understood that something like that is needed to guard the chest from the bowstring.

Since Mr. Munin’s wife, Ms. Flare, has a chest just as rich as Ms. Claire’s, I’m sure she can help with trying it on.

Mr. Munin and Mr. Simonov get along well due to their business, so I hope they can make something great together.

I’ll give Ms. Flare a bottle of perfume as a present.

”Oh, is this the perfume from the royal capital?”

Ms. Flare shows a smile like flowers blooming.

I’ve seen many beautiful women in the royal capital, but Ms. Flare is truly stunning.

I remember that the laws of this world are pretty lenient about affairs with married women.

I don’t plan to make a move, but I think I wouldn’t be able to refuse if Ms. Flare invited me.

Thanks to Miss Floria teaching me various things, I might finally join the ranks of bad adults.

Mr. Munin is giving me a scary glare.

Speaking of which, this guy is incredibly jealous.

I guess I have no choice but to show Mr. Munin my secret treasure.

”This is… isn’t this leather from a hedgehog?!”

So it really was good stuff after all.

I thought it was the same animal hide that was ridiculously priced at a top-tier shop in the royal capital.

This was sold cheaply as a flawed item in a second-rate shop in a back alley, but it seems it was the real deal.

”I think the grain of the silver surface is pretty rough.”

Compared to the stuff sold at the top-tier store, it clearly looked inferior, but considering the price, I think this is still a good item.

”For everyday use, something like this is sturdier and better.”

Price difference mostly comes from rare stuff and how hard it is to make.

Soft leather from female rats, called ‘manna leather,’ is expensive because it’s made from young, rare rat skins.

The tough male leather, hard to work with as is, doesn’t look too nice, but it’s good for adding Resist Fire attributes, so it’s actually pretty useful for armor.

So, you can give the leather an attribute… sounds super fantasy, but apparently the method’s secret secret.

The trick is re-tanning the male rat leather again, but that’s all I got told, no more.

”Yeah, male leather tends to be a little cheaper, but it’s still pretty high-end stuff normally.”

Seems like the Hero summoner’s been hunting huge rats like crazy, droppin’ the market price for male leather.

So Mr. Munin is trying to hoard as much as he can while it’s cheap, running the numbers in his head.

Remember when the leather traders in the capital were whining that good craftsmen had vanished, and even though it’s good stuff, nobody’s buying?

 Well…

I thought it was just talk, but maybe that talented craftsman leaving the capital was Mr. Munin himself.

As expected of a craftsman, the sight of materials makes him so jealous he forgets everything else.

He keeps inspecting all the strange, cheap leathers I found in random places.

Miss Floria told me if I want really good stuff, a top shop is best, but I went shopping at second- and third-rate stores for cheap junk.

Cheap and crappy, that’s the usual, and I often get ripped off with bad quality stuff.

But all I needed was practice materials, so honestly, as long as it’s cheap, even junk was fine.

I brushed off getting fake goods as part of the learning, but I picked out what I wanna make with a clear picture in mind.

All the leftover scraps from a whole head’s worth of leather, after a craftsman cuts out the parts, get sold cheap at a shady shop.

Even if it’s rare leather, what do you think?

It’s basically trash that’s supposed to be thrown away.

But knowing those materials’ traits is a valuable lesson in itself.

Since I’m just making small stuff like a little pouch for practice, scraps are enough.

Buying a whole piece is just wasting money.

Since it was some special deal, I bought the whole big piece of water monitor skin, not just the rat one they tried to sell cheap.

Mr. Munin checked it out and found out that, well, water monitor was almost twice the normal price, while the rat was just about right.

Guess it’s only about 2 thousand gold worth, so if you think of it as tuition, it’s not bad.

Water monitor meat gets caught a lot because it’s good for eating, so the price is usually cheap from the start.

Water monitor leather is popular for cheap gear because it’s waterproof, sturdy, and easy to work with.

Listening to that, I realize it’s pretty much my style of material.

The big piece of leather is even bigger than a cow’s, so if I’m making useful stuff for myself, this all works.

In the end, I got to bring my own materials and have Ms. Claire’s horse gear and chest armor made.

The horse gear mainly uses water monitor leather, and the chest armor is the rat leather.

Mr. Munin’s plan has Ms. Claire’s gear with 4 layers ── bra, underwear, leather armor, and rat chest plate.

I was picturing something tight-fitting, like a bodysuit, but splitting it up makes the overall gear more powerful because the bonuses add up better.

Thanks to quail meat, I didn’t have to pay for the work again this time.

Mr. Munin doesn’t want to owe me anything, it seems.

Ms. Flare winks at me teasingly from behind Mr. Munin.

I think she’s into me, but her husband’s super careful.

Mr. Munin used to work in the royal city, so maybe that’s why he knows all about the ladies’ little tricks.

The village’s biggest worrywart, maybe, because of that.

Mr. Munin’s a good-looking guy, and probably got caught up in some royal city lady dramas too.

Let’s hear those stories properly next time it’s just the guys.
