Volume 4 Chapter 13-2 Editor Skill
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
No matter how fast magic can heal me, you guys really don’t hold back, huh.
Even though I’ve been slashed up with swords so many times that I’m used to it… wounds from magic hurt way worse, you know.
”How’d it go? Did you figure it out yet?”
Lady Uno looks all cheerful, fixing up my arm with magic like it’s some kind of fun game, and then she tosses me that question──completely innocent.
I’m not sure if I’m supposed to be mad at her right now, or if I ought to say thank you.
Honestly, I never know what I’m supposed to do when stuff like this happens.
”I got the recording for now, but analyzing it’s going to take a while. Figuring out a way to deal with it? That’s gonna take even longer.”
Lady Uno’s face drops, pure disappointment.
Looks like she was hoping I could immediately copy enemy magic or something with some crazy skill.
If I actually had a skill that convenient, that’d be full-on cheat territory.
Once she finds out it’ll take a bit, Lady Uno zips off somewhere to go play.
She’s a dragon, but she’s got the mood swings of a cat.
Well, at least now I can finally focus on testing things out in peace.
I want to take my time, come up with a plan, and next time──I’d love to slice one of those magic arrows clean out of the air.
Is this Editor Skill actually easier to use now, though?
Half excited, I pull up the memory of when I got attacked by that magic arrow and let the scene play out.
And wow──even the pain replays perfectly now.
It’s cool that the performance got better, but… come on, this is rough.
At least I can turn off the sensation playback if I want.
If not, I’d never manage to use this thing.
When I slow down the magic arrow footage, I find out something big: the arrow of light doesn’t appear until the exact moment that chunk of mana hits my arm.
So it’s not really flying at me as an arrow: it’s a bead-sized hunk of mana, crazy fast, and way harder to slice than a normal arrow.
Can you even cut mana with a sword, anyway?
I try to zoom in even further on the mana right after it’s launched──and suddenly, a weird window pops up, vomiting lines of glitched-out text everywhere.
For a second, my heart nearly stops, but… looks like it’s not anything like an error or system crash.
Could it be showing the result of analyzing magic?
I mean, you could see the source code of selected parts in browser games and stuff.
Just looking at these random strings makes me feel like a hacker.
My programming history is just about showing ‘Hello world’ on the screen in class.
I wanted to try changing the display automatically from ‘good morning’ to ‘good night’ based on the time, but the teacher said not to do extra stuff in class.
Well, I sorta get how this programming stuff works.
After messing around, I found out I could copy and save these strings.
Seems like this can turn into an executable file. That’s amazing.
It’s a bit of a hassle, but it looks like I can get my hands on magic just by glancing at it.
This is cheating, totally cheating.
I tried using the magic arrow, all excited, but nothing happened.
Was I just happy for nothing?
Nah, I might just be doing it wrong.
Time for a break, I must be missing something.
The more I rush, the more I’ll miss important hints, and I’ll make dumb mistakes too.
Cheating can’t be that easy, right?
It’s better to struggle a bit, makes it more rewarding.
The bathroom and toilet are famous as thinking spots, but for me, it’s gotta be a hot bath.
Too bad there’s no bathroom here, but there is a cold spring for dipping.
Gotta close my eyes to the temperature this time. Being freed from gravity by buoyancy is what brings awakening.
I check to make sure no one’s around, then strip and dive into the spring.
Lady Uno doesn’t care at all if someone sees her n*ked, but she’s all curious about seeing me, which is embarrassing for me.
The water spirits gather around, but I’m cool with them seeing me.
After all, they just look like chunks of water.
As I ponder with the spirits swirling around, it hits me.
Maybe copying someone else’s magic right off the bat was too hard.
I should start with something simpler.
Let’s see if I can copy a skill I’m used to using.
For now, I’ll just use my usual Searching skill and see what happens.
First, activate Searching skill.
Save with Editor skill.
Open the source code, save it as a new file.
Same steps as earlier, nothing new so far.
The executable file I made like this… It ran, no problem.
Yes! My prediction was right!
I almost start dancing from excitement, but I’ve got spirits watching me, so I pull myself together.
With Editor skill, I proved I can make executable files. This is a huge step forward.
Suddenly, I realize my whole body’s freezing, like I’m packed in ice.
Whoa──snap out of it.
Got too into things and totally lost track of myself.
If I stay in here, I’m definitely catching a cold, so I scramble out of the water.
I pulled it off for now.
All that’s left is to keep trying and messing around till I get it.
When I show the skill executables on my PC screen, it really looks like regular folders in a tree.
Each skill branches out from a trunk-like root directory.
The new executable I made is just sitting at the root──but if I stuck it into some other skill’s folder, would it still run?
For a test, I copy the Searching skill’s executable into the Stealth skill folder.
Just like I thought, nothing happens when I try to run it.
Probably a missing path, or that kind of thing.
If path settings are too much hassle, I could just dump all the executables at root.
But the mess… that’s not great either.
While fiddling around, I notice something weird at the start of every skill executable file.
Looks like every exe in the same folder shares the same chunk at the start.
No clue what it says, but maybe if I match that header, it’ll run just fine?
Times like these, Editor skill is a lifesaver.
If I pay attention, it’ll instantly show all the common parts for me.
Well, they’re pretty similar, but not actually identical.
So maybe my theory about the path declaration at the start was off after all.
At this point, nothing makes sense anymore.
My brain’s completely scrambled.
I found some other weird files that looked like configuration files, but since I had no idea what they did, I didn’t dare mess with them.
If I move those files somewhere else, all my skills suddenly stop working, so yeah, they’re clearly important.
If I mess around too much and can’t put things back the way they were, that’ll be a disaster.
Better reset everything to normal and just take a breath.
The old laptop Dad gave me had a special button to reset everything back to how it was when we bought it, but, honestly, even then it took a whole day to fix things if I broke something.
I’d feel way safer if the editor skill had that kind of feature.
But nope, no reset button here, huh?
I think someone said you don’t get a reset button in real life, either.
Is this really something I’m supposed to be poking around in?
Normally, players aren’t supposed to mess with this programming stuff, right?
But, I mean, I’m not exactly just a player──I’m the summoned Hero, after all.
In the end, curiosity always wins.
Even though I’m kind of freaking out, my hands keep tinkering with the editor skill.
Maybe it’s reckless and stupid.
Or maybe there’s actually no risk at all──I can’t tell.
Well, at least I learned something huge──if I mess up changing the source code, Error gives me an error display right away.
After running a bunch of experiments with Trial and Error, I got to a pretty simple answer: I can’t use magic arrow spells in the first place.
Even if I copy someone else’s magic, I still can’t cast it.
But that doesn’t mean the editor skill is totally pointless.
When I tried deleting all the ‘execution Error’ parts out of the magic arrow’s source code, it actually started working.
And now, I have the ‘New Magic Arrow’──finally, my version I can use.
It just fires off a lump of mana that floats around for a bit, then disappears.
No turning into an arrow, nothing flashy.
It’s a perfectly harmless, 0-damage magic.
──Lady Uno laughed at my 0-strength “attack magic.” Still, rewriting actual magic source code… isn’t that kind of impressive?
Sure, normally you’d just level up your skills the usual way and get way more useful stuff.
But since my skill points are overflowing, might as well try things most people can’t even dream of, right?
