Nido-Ero 3

Chapter 3 Reincarnation

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 (Uh, it’s so, so bright…)

In a dark room, I suddenly feel like someone opened the curtains.

The brightness hits me, and I slowly open my eyes.

 (Wh-where am I…?)

 A world completely white.

I sense I’m looking around, but I have no eyes, no body.

It feels like just my consciousness, like right before I died.

 ’Have you woken up?’

I turn toward the voice but see no one.

 I look around, nervous.

 ’Ah, I don’t have a physical form.’

(No body? What does that mean…?)

’It’s like a bundle of energy. Think of me as a god, basically.’

 (………)

Stunned to hear “god,” I realize it really exists.

I had prayed to gods before, a few times.

 I even visited shrines.

But I never truly believed in gods.

’In the sense of creating the world, yes, gods exist. But as watchers, no ── they don’t.’

 I see.

If humans just decide that gods are supposed to watch over, then no matter how much we pray, wishes won’t come true.

I’m surprised it’s real, but I understand now.

I was shocked that it read my thoughts, but I guess if it’s a god, it can do that.

I ask a question I’ve been curious about.

(What will happen to me next? Will I go to… hell or something?)

’There’s no heaven or hell. Don’t worry about it.’

 Hearing that, I feel relieved.

 (Could this be… reincarnation?)

If someone from modern Japan ended up here, surely many would think the same thing.

’It’s nice that souls are quick to understand these days.’

 So, it really was reincarnation.

 (T-tell me more, please.)

’Of course. I’ll explain everything. You will be reincarnated, but your body will be newly made. Also, I’ll give you one ability, if you want it. Think carefully. What ability do you want?’

Hearing about an ability made my nonexistent heart pound like crazy.

But I waited quietly, expecting more. Nothing. So, I asked.

(Um… Do I have a mission? Like, defeat the Demon King or something?)

 ’No, not really.’

(Then… is it possible to be reborn in Japan again?)

The god, who’d been so calm, seemed to hesitate for a moment.

 ’…You have a strange soul.’

 (Is that so?)

’Yes. Lately, I only get asked about going to another world.’

(Haha, it’s popular in Japan, you know, isekai.)

’To answer your question, yes, you can be reborn in Japan.’

(And… what about the ability then?)

’The range of choices will be smaller, but you’ll still get one.’

Smaller range? I wondered what that meant, and the god gave me an example.

’Even if you had a high combat ability in your previous life, it would just make it easier to kill people. I can’t give you the power to kill someone with a single punch. It’s the same with magic.’

Hmm… a fantasy world where I could use magic *is* tempting.

But realistically, I don’t think I could kill people or fight monsters.

Maybe it’s better to start over in Japan.

What kind of ability would help me succeed in modern Japan?

Should I think about it more like a job?

 Doctor?

 Lawyer?

 Police officer?

(‘Um, for example, if I wanted to be a doctor, what kind of ability could I get?)

’Then, a healing ability would be good, wouldn’t it?’

(A healing ability? Like, I’d be good at surgery?)

’A healing ability is an ability to cure illnesses.’

 (…Is it like magic?)

 ’That’s right.’

(But you said you couldn’t give me magic…)

’Healing doesn’t have an attack ability, you see.’

 I see…

So, even if it’s magic, you can teach it if it doesn’t have an attack ability.

(By the way, what can you do with a healing ability?)

’Can’t bring back the dead, but anything else is possible.’

(Eh… so, you can cure cancer too?)

’Not familiar with your world’s diseases, but if it’s an illness, it’s possible.’

 What the…

I thought in a fantasy world, not modern Japan, I wouldn’t get any big abilities. But this could be a game-breaking ability! If I study hard and become a doctor, I could definitely become famous.

’You might want to reconsider that.’

 (Why’s that?)

’Think about it. What would happen if someone in your world could easily heal any disease?’

Heal any disease… Ah, I get it!

If everyone knew about someone who could easily cure incurable diseases, they might get kidnapped or worse!

They could even end up in human experiments to figure out that ability.

 Then what should I do?

 Pick a job that’s not a doctor?

Wait, why did I want to be a doctor in the first place?

Sure, I admire jobs that help people, but being a cop would be cool too, right?

’You’re too focused on curing the incurable. Even if you could heal without anyone interfering, you can’t heal every creature in the world. Aren’t there closer beings in need? Isn’t it enough to ease their pain?’

 Ah, that’s right.

Even at 42, my body had plenty of issues.

Migraines, poor eyesight, cavities, obesity, stiff shoulders, back pain, constipation.

 Every day, something hurt.

Just getting rid of that pain would make life more comfortable.

Stay low-key, help lots of people.

Maybe something like massage therapy would be good.

 Alright, that sounds good.

(I want to be reborn on the same Earth as before! And I’ll choose healing as my ability!)

Huh? Where’d the cops go? …Ah, whatever.

This is it. The start of my second life.
