Rising Monk V3c110-3

Volume 3 Chapter 110 The Sadistic Monks

’So you want me to run?’

”That’s harsh. Well, I guess running is faster, so it’s fine with me.”

Kian lit the bandage that had fallen to the ground, then took off running to catch up with the two horses ahead.

(Hey, ‘glasses’. You saved me. Thanks.)

 ’It’s nothing, really.’

(Still, thanks. If we’re safe now, it’s all thanks to you.)

Kian smiled brightly and increased his running speed even more.

Ninini’s back quickly closed in──then, Ninini turned around and looked at him, eyes wide in shock, exclaiming, “Nyaaah!”

Seeing someone running desperately like that, you’d expect no reaction at all.

(But who would’ve thought the sleeping curse Thorn Spirit cast would actually work?)

Originally, even the strong opponent who should’ve killed Kian in a flash had no choice but to collapse on their knees from the curse. It’s terrifyingly effective.

(The activation condition… could it really be the ‘blood technique’ of ‘glasses’ that’s at play? If so, then using ‘glasses’ magic would let me easily defeat anyone, except Oswald.)

But is the hypothesis really correct?

If there are other conditions, using the sleeping curse could be extremely dangerous.

If it doesn’t activate when you think it will, it could lead to instant death.

This time, ‘glasses’ Kian was confident his hypothesis was correct and was calculating the moves, but if the sleeping curse hadn’t activated at that exact moment, he’d have been left standing still, ready for a fatal strike.

There’s probably no more ridiculous way to die.

(The time the curse lasts varies by person, and the range of its effect is unknown.)

He wants to rush to confirm the conditions with more experiments, but… if the range is too wide, it could cause disasters everywhere.

For example, if the range extends all the way to the merchant city of Ramsey, there’d be a significant number of people dying from falling off horses during practice.

(If I target the night, there won’t be many people fixing roofs or riding horses around, but…)

Still, people aren’t completely inactive at night.

If the effect even reaches a land with a time difference, it’s really a disaster.

”By the way, why haven’t I been affected by the sleep curse when it activates?”

Kian ran side by side with Ninini, frowning as he clenched his brow.

 Oswald is extraordinary.

He’s got a powerful creature called Phoenix living inside him.

The sleep curse probably doesn’t affect Phoenix, so it doesn’t affect Oswald either.

 But what about Kian──?

Kian is an ordinary human, except for being able to use vampire abilities.

He can absorb curses and magic, but first he must sense them targeting himself. Just like this time, he didn’t feel any curse coming from Oswald at all.

(Maybe because it’s a curse targeting the world, so I can’t sense it. If that’s true, I really don’t get why only I can resist this.)

The questions of “why” and “how” are just too many.

Even if it’s a performance test, it’s clearly dangerous to casually trigger this confusing thing.

Besides the structure of ‘glasses’ and the soul-sealing spell, it might be good to ask an expert if possible.

Thinking that, Kian winked at Ninini, who was looking at him with a creepy gaze.

* * *

Two hours of running across the wilderness.

Even with several breaks along the way, they had reached just before the Great Forest.

The thick, dark forest is mostly untouched by humans, filled with wolves, deer, and monsters──an uninhabited kingdom. Bloodsucking creatures swarm the wetlands, but due to territory disputes, some groups might have migrated from wetlands into the Great Forest.

The Storm Herd probably wouldn’t pursue all the way into the Great Forest, but the forest itself is even more dangerous.

”Let’s dismount and proceed from here.”

Sarah’s voice makes Ninini and Serena get off their horses.

Rean was still lying sideways on the horse, just like a bed sheet on a balcony.

 ”Ms. Serena, please guide us.”

”Mm. We’ve set up an impromptu camp just as we enter the forest. The barrier stone Ms. Sarah gave me is placed, so it should be safe from both pursuers and beasts once inside. Mr. Rean, are you okay?”

 ”……”

Rean didn’t answer, his eyes lifeless.

It was like he was a doll, devoid of a soul.

He seemed to be breathing, but Serena’s voice didn’t seem to reach him at all.

(Rean might be beyond saving now.)

The High Elf magician ── Vestacia ── was Rean’s lover.

Even though a stunningly beautiful woman like Lyritisse was close by, Rean had always loved only Vestacia.

It wasn’t just her beauty, nor her sex appeal.

He loved everything about her, including her flaws.

Rean didn’t know how the Wolfmen magician threatened him, but if he truly believed that fleeing meant Vestacia’s death, it was no wonder he had become a shell of a person.

However, he has the power to bring peace to the East End, so we hope he doesn’t give up and keeps pushing forward.

”Let’s keep him on the horse. I’ll go ahead.”

Sarah drew her sword and began cutting away the vines at the entrance to the forest.

Once they go a little further in, they would enter a place where the light barely reaches and the plant life would thin out considerably.

 ”I’ll do it-nya. Sarah, you rest-nya.”

”No, I’m the most energetic, so I’ll continue.”

 ”It’s not about who’s energetic-nya. I haven’t done anything yet-nya. Let me handle this small task-nya.”

 ”I see.”

With that, Sarah sheathed her sword.

 ”Kian, are you okay?”

Sarah patted Serena’s shoulder, who had her ears drooping, before walking over to Kian. Kian tilted his head.

”I’m fine, the wound’s not a big deal.”

”It’s not just the wound. I’m sorry for making you run for so long.”

”It’s fine. Not a problem at all.”

”Your magic power is significantly reduced. You must have had quite the battle, huh?”

 ”A little, yeah.”

 ”……”

Sarah touches Kian’s arm and shoulder, looking worried.

Since there wasn’t a single scratch, she eventually backed off.

 ”Kian, you’ve really gotten strong…”

”Why do you look so sad?”

”Sad? Or maybe lonely? It used to be that you couldn’t be without me, but now… you’re not like that anymore.”

 ”I still need you.”

 ”I hope that’s true.”

Sarah gave a soft smile before waving Serena over.

”Ms. Serena, may I have a moment?”

 ”What is it?”

”There are a few things I want to ask.”

 ”…?”

Sarah turned to face Serena and continued.

 ”Your father──Glen SilverWooloo, he’s 72, right?”

 ”That’s right.”

 ”Does he have any illnesses?”

”I don’t know, but he seemed fine. He wasn’t taking any medicine.”

”I see. Second question, who is this?”

She pulled out a sketch of a woman drawn on high-quality white paper.

It was a beautiful woman’s face from the Wolfmen.

Sarah’s hand held several pieces of paper, each with a drawing of a woman’s head. They were carefully drawn in pencil, with no color added.

”She looks a lot like you, Serena. But… somehow more mature.”

 ”Yeah, that’s right.”

Sarah put her hand on her cheek.

”By the way, I stole these from Barghest’s research tent.”

 ”What…?”

”Well, more precisely, I took them from a secret room underground in the research tent. I thought Ms. Vestacia was locked up in there, but instead, I found this creepy room with these drawings on the walls.”

 ”Ugh.”
