Volume 3 Chapter 111 Yelmar’s Proposal I
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
If someone says a mercenary group is just a bunch of criminals, I have to admit that’s mostly true…
Compared to the main group led by Glen, Yelmar’s party still leaves the impression of a ragtag bunch of troublemakers.
”Yelmar…”
Sarah narrowed her eyes calmly.
But she only muttered softly and prompted little Fuuro to speak more.
”So? When did you start watching us?”
”Since yesterday. Before that, other guys were on it, but they went to Azrael on a different mission. I don’t know when the previous group started watching. I’m just a low-level, after all.”
Fuuro and his team were told to hide in a nearby village and monitor things.
But with members of the main ‘Storm Herd’ wandering around nearby, hiding in the village was tough. So, they decided to hide in the shallow layers of Great Forest and wait for the monitoring to be finished.
They weren’t able to do proper surveillance but thought they could report what they saw without getting in trouble.
”Where is Yelmar? Azrael?”
”Um, probably still at the temporary base.”
”Where is this base exactly?”
”North-east from here, on the highlands between Griffin’s Mountain and Great Forest. They grow delicious melons there.”
Griffin’s Mountain is a nickname for part of the Dacia Mountains or the Dacia Range itself. South of the Dacia Mountains borders Great Forest, in the north it borders Dacia Plain. Together, Great Forest and Dacia form a natural barrier splitting Ramsey and Dacia.
”Crossing Great Forest to monitor from the Nordende domain──sounds like a tough job.”
”They’re skilled. They’ve only recently gained recognition.”
”I see. Do you have any other useful info?”
”Umm…”
Fuuro is staring absent-mindedly into the distance.
After a moment, he droops his dog ears and sighs, “Nope…”
”How big is your ‘Storm Herd’? How did you leave the main group?”
”There are probably about a hundred of them. Everyone left their families because the main family was annoying. The main family is picky about little things, always yelling about rules and discipline. But if you follow Yelmar, you can drink, dance, and have fun freely.”
”I see. Sarah, is there anything else you want to ask?”
”Not really. If they don’t speak, this kid will just die.”
”──Mag is a liar. She’ll betray her comrades without hesitation, and she steals. Mag once stole a golden goblet and silver dishes from Barghest’s tent and sold them to a merchant, which got her whipped. You shouldn’t trust anything she says.”
”Thanks for the advice.”
Kian returned the boy, Fuuro, and asked the girl, Mag, who was being watched by Serena, the same questions about what she knew.
The girl, Mag, told them nearly the same information as Fuuro did.
From this, they could infer that unless they had coordinated beforehand, they were telling the truth.
”Fuuro is a jerk. During training, some guy named Beni really beat him up, and in revenge, Fuuro set fire to Beni’s family’s tent. He got kicked out of the group and was picked up by Yelmar, who let him join. But I’ve never thought of that guy as a comrade.”
”――――.”
”H… Hah, I’ve… I’ve said everything. P-please, don’t kill me…”
Mag, exposed to Sarah’s cold gaze, curled up, pressing his dog ears down.
”I see. Well then, both of you, take the antidote.”
Sarah released the simple barrier and took out 2 small bottles of blue liquid.
When she brought the bottles close to Fuuro and Mag’s mouths, they both eagerly drank the contents.
”The poison’s gone.”
”Wh-what happens to us? C-can we be freed?”
”Wait a bit for that. ──Mr. Fuuro, you seem eager to run, but be careful, because things will get bad if you do.”
”Bad?”
”The antidote you just drank so eagerly… I mixed in some parasite eggs with it.”
”Wha──?”
Sarah smiled slightly and continued.
”If you run, they might eat through your stomach and come out along the way.”
”Pfft, don’t joke, you old hag!”
”Right! You promised to help if I was honest!”
”Be silent, you two. Scream any louder, and I’ll have the bugs mess with your brain.”
”Guh…””Ah… agh…”
After gently reminding Sarah to behave, she turned her attention to Kian, who had completely withdrawn.
”Can I ask you something?”
”Of, of course.”
”Over here.”
Sarah beckoned, leading him into the shade of the trees.
As he wondered what she was planning, she quickly set up a makeshift barrier and turned to Kian with a serious expression.
”Let’s negotiate with Yelmar.”
”Why?”
”For the mission. We have to stay here a bit longer.”
”Can’t we aim to meet up with Ms. Priscilla by crossing the Great Forest?”
”Are you serious? That guy can’t endure crossing the forest.”
Sarah paced restlessly in front of Kian.
She must be talking about Rean.
Indeed, Rean was in a state akin to death.
If he encountered a horde of monsters now, it would be dangerous, and even without that, there was a risk of weakening and dying during the harsh forest crossing.
”Mr. Rean’s tachyonian cells have become inactive.”
”What happens if they’re inactive?”
”You can’t produce magic power, and eventually, you’ll run out. Magic power is life force. If it hits absolute 0, you’ll wither like a vampire and enter a state of pseudo-death.”
”Is it possible to come back from pseudo-death?”
”Right on the mark. If the organs stop functioning, a person dies. Vampires can be revived with magic power, though.”
”How much does he have left?”
As Kian inquired, Sarah crossed her arms below her chest.
”I don’t know…. I’ve never seen or heard of such symptoms. But if we don’t take steps to reactivate his tachyonian cells tonight, his life will be in danger.”
”Is it because he have had to give up on Ms. Vestacia that he have become a wreck?”
”I wonder. I don’t think he turns into a wreck because tachyonian cells stop working… I believe it’s because of that merchant he made a deal with. Specifically, the magic contract he struck with that merchant is what caused this.”
”Hmm…”
”Either way, crossing the Great Forest isn’t realistic. We should wait here until we meet up with Ms. Priscilla. That way, we can quickly deal with any third party that might attack us──those who could strike at any moment.”
”But it’s dangerous. Several of their subordinates seem to be tough enemies.”
