”Eclair, I’m leaving your back to you.”
”Yeah, yeah. I’m older now, so if you mess up like before, I might not be able to support you.”
When the soldiers reached the front line, they were pushing back an ‘another world monster’, shields up and spears forward, crowded together, Eclair walking beside me, and I told her again, I trust you with my back.
I never would have thought that Eclair, a comrade from my Monster Hunter days with my older brothers, would become my wife. Not until recently. But for the war ahead, I believe there’s no better partner to rely on. In this precarious situation, I had to borrow her strength to give hope to the soldiers.
Sorry… I really didn’t want to drag you into this fight… blame it on fate that you met a man like me…
Regripping my sword, I charged toward the horde of ‘another world monsters’ attacking the soldiers. As I passed, I cut down several spider-like ‘another world monsters’ with multiple blades. I haven’t fought in real combat for a while, so my blades aren’t as sharp as before, but I managed to take down enemies without making a fool of myself.
”Arbalest… guess skipping training shows after all. Hmph!”
Stepping on the ground, gathering my energy into a punch that I released, ejecting the monsters’ guts; Eclair muttered as she sighed. Both of us, busy with office work in the Capital City lately, have clearly lost some skill since our Abyss Vena days.
”Yeah. I don’t want to get old. Skip practice, and you’ll notice the decline fast. Hmph, hah!”
The bear-like ‘another world monster’ next to me tried to slash with its claws, so I stopped it with my other arm, then cut across its belly with both hands in an X shape. The bear-like ‘another world monster,’ spilling body fluids, collapsed with a thud to the ground.
”But this is the crucial moment. If we can take down even a little and the soldiers get their spirit back, we might just win this. Here I go!!”
Eclair dodged the ‘another world monster’ that rushed at her with a Sudden Rush, then slammed an elbow to its head, crushing it. She followed up with a knee kick, sending the enemy flying with a Blow Away. The ‘another world monsters’ that were about to fly toward our allies stopped attacking the soldiers and started gathering in a swarm toward us.
…I need to attract more of them over here. Soon, His Majesty will have the soldiers charge from the side. That will boost their morale, and Quenelra will give us backup with instructions. After that, we just need to take down about 30 or so more.
The sword I held wasn’t nearly as valuable as Lady Aurelia’s blade, which belonged to the sword saint Dalmoth, a concubine of Kent. However, it was a well-crafted silver blade I had fought alongside for a long time, and I had a deep attachment to it.
”Now that I think about it, meeting Kent might have changed my fate. Thanks to him, I’ve been forced to clean up after him a lot, but I guess I should be grateful he’s giving me a final grand exit.”
A wolf-like ‘another world monster’ jumped at my throat, but I made it bite the guard of my sword, then cut off its limbs with my other arm, finally decapitating it. The ‘another world monster’ had tough skin, but as long as you strike the right spot, it’s not an opponent you can’t cut. Once the blade’s angle is right, it can easily be severed by the speed of the sword’s swing.
”Oh, I’m grateful to Kent, really. He’s such a worthy gentleman, making sure to savor each of my adorable daughters properly. Not like some poor noble, lacking both funds and vitality. Hehe~”
