*Arbalest’s Perspective
”Julius, pass on the order. Calm the troops at the front. Quenelra, draw your sword as well; if you’ve made it this far, it’s time to put down the pen. If you want to return alive to your bride, find a path with your blade.”
”Old man, I don’t want to die. I’m definitely making it back to the Capital City where my bride is waiting. Damn these ‘another world monsters’!”
Quenelra appeared as if springing from the earth, showing a fierce expression to the ‘another world monster’ before drawing his sword and hurriedly shouting commands to the nearby panicking soldiers.
He’s a man with some spine, he might actually be useful as a military officer. However, it’s a shame that his sword arm isn’t as skilled as his mouth.
The moment of joy at discovering unexpected military talent in Quenelra was brief, as the ant- and worm-type ‘another world monsters’ that were thought to be hiding underground began to attack the vanguard soldiers.
”Don’t panic! Recall your training. In outdoor combat, you work with your allies to engage the enemy. The front line, raise your shields to block the enemy’s attacks, and the back line, thrust your spears to pierce the ‘another world monsters’!”
The number of ‘another world monsters’ emerging from the ground was about 5 thousand, all medium-sized, and their combat strength was overwhelming the True Demon Kingdom’s army. Already a dozen kilometers away from the Margrave South District army’s rearguard led by Kent, I realized that calling for reinforcements now would only result in a failed offensive, so I signaled to advance with arrows.
”Arbalest! Support us until I lead the Black Dragon Duchy army in a flanking maneuver to make our move!”
”Your Majesty!? Please wait!?”
Shifa ignored the attempts to stop her and led the Black Dragon Dukedom’s infantry to start a large detour to the right. Although they were the least trained among the participating nations’ infantry, perhaps due to Shifa’s [Demon Lord] job, their movements were agile and light.
If so, they might be able to pull off a flanking attack. His Majesty has also become quite perceptive.
”Men, His Majesty will support us from the flank. Push back the enemy!!”
”””Wooohhhh!!”””
As Shifa’s flanking attack began, the soldiers mustered their courage and thrust their spears, reversing their initial disadvantage and regaining their composure, bringing the combat to a stalemate.
”Quenelra, sorry to bother you, but take command for a bit! I’m going to smash the enemy with Eclair. I’m not just here to command; I want to cut loose.”
”Hey, wait! Old man, I’m no good at commanding troops. I’m an bureaucrat, you know!”
”Quiet. After this battle, I’m bound to retire, and I’ll put Kent in my spot. I’m planning on a comfortable retirement with Eclair, so work hard and don’t get henpecked by your wife.”
”Hey! Old man!”
After hurriedly leaving the command to Quenelra, he whispered to Eclair, who had been following like a shadow.
”So, sorry to ask, but can you help decorate my retirement path as a military commander?”
Eclair handed over all her favorite swords as if it were the most natural thing.
”Of course. I am your wife. It’s my duty to follow you. Just leave your back to me.”
”Sorry, one more thing, when I retire, will the house be okay?”
”After retiring, we can just go back to Abyss Vena’s shop and run the taverns together. We’re going to pass the family name to MirMir (Miriallia) anyway.”
”I guess so… Actually, I’ve always wanted to try running taverns. Can we drink for free?”
”Idiot…”
Eclair was blushing, and a tap from a sword hilt to her chest was all it took to make him see a glimmer of hope in this gloomy post-war life.
”Alright! Arbalest Haydon, let’s charge into the final battle!!”
The old man pulled out all the bowls he’d been keeping sealed, each one gripping his favorite sword, and charged straight into the thick of the battlefield packed with ‘another world monsters’, with Eclair in tow.
