Volume 5 Chapter 11 Meat Becomes Delicious with Salt

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”These are the only ingredients we have,” said Mr. Dogor.

The kitchen that Mr. Dogor showed was a mix of Earth and this world’s kitchens. It looked like someone tried and failed to build a system kitchen.

Mr. Raoh introduced me as a skilled cook, so I ended up helping with the dinner.

There seem to be about 30 residents in the apartment, but their attendance for meals varies daily. It’s quite chaotic. They expect me to prepare around ten servings because those who miss a meal eat out.

Even if I make too much, I can store it in my magic bag and eat it anytime. However, I won’t easily reveal my few trump cards to people I’ve just met.

Mr. Dogor usually handles all meal preparations himself. I wonder why they don’t hire a professional cook, but apparently, the last cook was terrible—selling off ingredients instead of using them. If they want to hire trustworthy people in this world, they either need someone with a reliable letter of introduction or have to train them from scratch.

It seems that without a success-based reward system like the Adventurer’s Guild, employees often run off with work equipment. Staffing agencies probably can’t exist under such conditions. Taking equipment is treated differently from theft. Even high-ranking individuals like officials and clergy casually claim items they like at their new posts, so I can only conclude that it’s part of the culture.

The abundant ingredients provided are all of good quality. If people have low morals, they would take them after seeing this.

Meat, meat, meat. Most of it is meat, and there are also tons of eggs.

There is also goat milk, wine, salt, vinegar, soy sauce, and olive oil.

The Hero ranch seems to make cheese and butter, but unfortunately, they are out of stock now. They are still fumbling with dairy products, and it seems to be difficult.

There is also some hard bread or the stuff that is normally sold in stores.

There are no vegetables at all, but if I stretch my legs to the canal, there are plenty of crepes growing there.

I could probably make mayonnaise, but it might not taste as expected with the available ingredients.

Roasting and stewing are also time-consuming. So, I’ll simply cut and grill, but the cooking tools are really coarse.

The small bronze knife is not well-maintained and has a terrible cutting edge. The hearth only has a pot, a net, and some skewers.

”I’m serving boiled eggs with the shell on in hot water and grilled meat on skewers with sauce over direct fire.”

Boiled eggs and grilled meat every day? It’s kind of wild, isn’t it?

I taste Mr. Dogor’s sauce. It’s mostly vinegar and salt, with a hint of valuable soy sauce. Hmm, it’s not to my liking.

I have no choice but to use my own cooking tools, even if it reveals the magic bag.

I take out the deba and yanagiba knives Mr. Zenom made for me. They’re fully steel and a bit different from traditional Japanese knives, but they cut very well.

Mr. Zenom finished both blades, but I sharpened them to be more like traditional Japanese knives. I mainly use the deba, but the long yanagiba is also necessary. I’m cutting a lot of meat, but I want to try making sashimi with fish someday.

I don’t know their preferences here, so I’ll just make what I want to eat. I want to have a simple steak with this meat.

The steak Mr. Raoh treated me to at lunch had a delicious soy sauce-based sauce. However, the soy sauce was too overpowering to enjoy the meat’s natural flavor.

It was enough for ten people. I separate the meat from the bone with the deba and thinly slice it to about 3 centimeters with the yanagiba.

”What a terrifyingly sharp blade this is.”

Mr. Dogor watches with interest as the meat is cut. Of course, it’s a dwarf’s blade.

My cooking skill is maxed out, and my real skill has also significantly increased.

Recently, I feel like my skill doesn’t work when my hand is decided. The effect of the skill is just a supplement, and perhaps it’s unnecessary for skilled people.

I lightly sprinkle salt on the meat I just cut. It looks simple, but the taste changes depending on the amount of salt. The way it’s spread is important, but Mr. Dogor is looking elsewhere.

It’s a chance to steal some technique, but he’s wasting it. Hmm, this person isn’t cut out to be a cook.

I spread olive oil in my favorite copper pan and grill the meat to medium-rare. The meat’s texture and aging are perfect. The seasoning is just salt, and the cooking level is the key. I can’t use pepper anyway.

I can only grill 2 pieces at a time, so grilling enough for ten people with one pan is a bit tough.

I also make a fake consommé soup in a pot and make a plain omelet in the pan after grilling the steaks. The smell of beef fat sticks to it, but this is still delicious.

There are over a hundred unhatched eggs carelessly thrown into the pantry basket, but it’s probably bad to secretly take them.

”As expected, the real chef is different.”

It’s nothing special. Today’s dishes are all ridiculously simple. Plus, I’m not a cook. I’m a Stargazer, a legendary job known only to a few.

The finished dishes are placed on the wagon, and Mr. Dogor brings them to the dining hall.

”Hey, it smells great, though I don’t know what it is.”

Mr. Raoh cheers, and everyone in the dining hall turns to look at us.

 ”Hey, you’re Amada, right?”

I recognize the face. If I’m not mistaken, it’s Mr. Kondou, the former police officer who believes this world is a VRMMO. I didn’t expect him to be acquainted with the Professor.

 ”Long time no see.”

”Oh, you two know each other?”

”It’s been since last summer since I saw Amada. I’ve been worried because I haven’t seen him lately, so I’ve been looking for him.”
